POR
A singular disease is prevalent to an alarming extent in some sections of this county. The family of Mr. Por has suffered severely. Four of his children have fallen victims to the dreadful malady. The symptoms of the disease, as an excessive fever, and consequent headache, followed by a tickling in the throat. The second or third day the throat becomes very sore, and the swelling commences, and continues until it completely stops the respiration. A considerable quantity of morbid matter flows from the part affected, and one of the children wiped its mouth with its hand, and wherever the matter touches its skin, it raised small pimples, not unlike the kine pock. It is to be regretted, that those afflicted with it, do not get medical advice or assistance, until the disease has taken too deep a root. – N.Y. Gazette [Republican Compiler (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania) December 15, 1824. Submitted by Nancy]
