Accidents, Fires, Train Wrecks
and other Calamities

The cotton factory, grist-mill and machine shop, about four miles from Poughkeepsie, belonging to Messrs. Whipple and Newell were destroyed by fire on the evening of the 20th ult.  It is supposed to have been occasioned by the friction of the main wheel which was put in motion by the sudden rise of the stream, the gates of the dam having been left hoisted.  Loss estimated from 20 to $25,000.  No insurance. –Albany Argus. Fire occasioned by a Shower of Rain
In Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on the 20th ult., a heavy shower caused the stream to rise in the night, which put the water wheel of a mill in motion; the wheel, by the friction of the machinery, caused combustion and set the mill on fire; from this the fire was communicated to a cotton factory and machine shop, all of which were consumed.  Loss is estimated at $15,000.

New York, Feb. 12, 1827
On Friday night, the new stables, &c. of
Abijah H. Hatch of Fishkill, keeper of the stage house at that place and one of the proprietors of the line of stages, were destroyed by fire, together with 17 fine horses, about 500 dollars worth of hay and several harnesses, &c. Only 2 out of 19 horses in the stable were saved. Eleven that were killed, were the property of Mr. H. stated to be worth $1000. One of the drivers made every exertion to save the horses. He rushed into the stable and cut loose the four horses belonging to his team, but could not induce them to leave the stable. He led them to the door, but they would not come out: He then mounted one and tried to ride him out but all to no purpose and his favorite horses were left, when the faithful driver could stand it no longer, to their fate. – Com.
