Mrs. Jennie Bruce Dies
TUPPER LAKE -  Mrs. Jennie F. Bruce, 87, who served as Tupper Lake librarian for more than 17 years, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Riverside hospital, Jacksonville, Fla., where she had been a patient about a month.
She was born in Colton, Nov. 17, 1880, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Frank, and was married at South Colton about 58 years ago to John W. Bruce.  The family moved to Tupper Lake in 1910.  Mr. Bruce was a logging foreman for many years for the Oval Wood Dish Co. in the Tupper area.  He died Sept. 13, 1939.
Mrs. Bruce served a librarian here from 1928 until her retirement on Dec. 1, 1945.  After fire destroyed the town hall, which housed the library, an March 14, 1942, she headed a vigorous effort which led to the reestablishment of the library and its change from town to school district sponsorship.  Only a handful of its 6,000 volumes were salvaged after the fire, but her dedication to the library cause sparked rapid progress over the ensuing years, during which library holdings more than doubled, circulation soared and a major recodeling project was completed.
Since her retirement Mrs. Bruce had spent most of her time with her children.  Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Betty) Zader, Syracuse;  three sons:   Frank Bruce, Tuscaloosa, Ala.,;  J. Donald Bruce, Jacksonville Fla., with whom she had spent the past winter;  and Daniel Bruce, Atlanta, Ga.;  one sister,  Mrs. Maude Fox of Atlantic City, N.J.;  eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
