COUNTY HISTORY

In 1789, Ontario County was formed from Montgomery. The original area was much larger than present day Ontario County. It included what is now the counties of Allegany (1806), Cattaraugus (1808), Chautauqua (1808), Erie (1821), Genesee (1802), Livingston (1821), Monroe (1821), Niagara (1808), Orleans (1824), Steuben (1796), Wyoming (1841), and Yates Counties (1823), Schuyler (1854) and Wayne (1823).
