1882 A Family Reunion
On Tuesday last the family
of John Briggs, Esq., formerly of Naples and well know in this town, gathered at
his residence near Bloods Station, to pay him a visit on his eightieth birthday.
Six sons, Joseph C. of Torrey, NY., James S., John, David, and Charles, of
Naples and Geo. B., of New York City, were all present, as also was the only
surviving daughter, Mrs. S.J. Merrill, and several grand and great
grandchildren. In the morning the father was invited to visit one of his
neighbors, and upon his return found himself surrounded by a house full of
loving hearts and happy faces, some of which he had not seen for five years. The
surprise was genuine, and although at the advanced age of four-score years, he
proved equal to the occasion, and appeared quite as young as any of his sons.
Many presents were made, and after partaking of a sumptuous dinner the family
sat down to a visit such as they had not enjoyed for many years. But while happy
in each other's society their minds must have reverted to absent ones, who have
been called from earth to a better and happier place. Mother's, Thomas',
Margaret's and Sylvester's place among them was vacant, and none of them knew
who was to be the next. This reunion was most pleasant, and it was decided to
hold a grand Briggs picnic at Seneca Point during the next summer, where and
when it is hoped the entire family will come together.
(This
postcard was sent to all of the Briggs and extended families in 1909. The
reunions continued well into the 1960's in Naples.)
