The Town of Albion in Orleans County, New York is centrally located in the county. The town contains part of the Village of Albion, for which it was named. Bureaucrats created the township in 1875 by dividing the Town of Barre. The population in 1890 was 1,304; in 2000 it was 8,042. The village of Albion is partly in the Town of Albion and Gaines. Pioneers settled Albion in 1812 and called it Newport until it was incorporated in 1828 as the Village of Albion. At that time, the village was entirely within the Town of Barre. Albion became the county seat in 1825. The Erie Canal passes through the town and village. The area is the center of the Medina sandstone industry, and supports fertile agricultural lands.
