SHAW, Francis George
Death of the Original Slave Deliverer-New York, November 9- Francis George Shaw died at West New Brighton, Staten Island, last night. He was one of the earliest and most prominent contributors to and ardent workers in the "underground railroad" by which slaves were forwarded from the south into Canada. He was the father of Colonel Shaw, who commanded the first regiment of colored United States troops, and who was killed at the head of his regiment at Hilton Head. TOMPKINS, Daniel D.
Died at his residence on Staten Island, N.Y., on Saturday the 11th inst., after a long and painful illness, Daniel D. Tompkins, Esq., in the 51st year of his age, late Vice President of the United States.
New York, June 14
The remains of the late Daniel D. Tompkins, Esq., were yesterday afternoon attended to the place of interment by numerous relatives, friends and an immense concourse of citizens. The corpse reached the city on board the steam boat Nautilus at about five o’clock. The flags of our forts and vessels were hoisted half mast and minute guns were fired from the Revenue Center. The members of the Court of Errors, now in session at our City Hall and indeed all the official characters of the city, including the Mayor, and Corporation, paid their last respects to the deceased whose amiable character and public services will never be forgotten by a grateful people. VAN MATER, Ann Vandervoort
At Castleton, S. I., on Tuesday morning. Sept. 29, Ann Vandervoort, widow of the late Gilbert Van Mater of Newtown, L. I., aged 88 years and 3 months. Her remains will be taken to Greenwood Cemetery. Carriages will be in waiting at Hamilton av Ferry, Brooklyn, at 11 1/2 a.m., on Thursday. The relatives and friends of her family are respectfully invited to attend. [New York Times, Sept. 30, 1857]
