JAMES V. ROWLEY.
News of the death of James V. Rowley at the Willard state hospital was
received here the fore part of last week. Mr. Rowley had spent the best
part of his life in this part of the town. At one time he was a large
land owner, engaging extensively in farming and lumbering, making good
for a time but broken health caused his business to lax. During his
more active life he was deeply engaged in church work and other
activities that tended to build up the community He had many reatives
in Canisteo, Jasper, Machias, N. Y., and in Minnesota and California.
Mr. Rowley's father, John S. Rowley, built and operated a flouring mill
here back in the early '40s. The mill did a thriving business for a
time. It was located on the lands now owned by E. L. VanOrman and was
run by water power. The water was taken up a third of a mile away,
conducted by broad pine troughs. Canisteo Times, (Canisteo, NY) February 19, 1919, page 6, col. 4.
