STATE INSTITUTIONS.

NEW YORK STATE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS’ HOME, Bath, Steuben County, NY

Established by chapter 48 of the Laws of 1878; opened December 25, 1878.

 

     Objects. – To provide a home for infirm, disabled, and destitute soldiers and sailors who served in the army or navy of the United States during the late rebellion, and who enlisted from the State of New York or shall have resided in the State for one year preceding their application, and who have no property or relatives able and legally liable to support them.

     Governing body. – Trustees.

     President. – Gen. Daniel E. Sickles, 100 Broadway, New York City.

     Secretary. – Otis H. Smith, Bath, N.Y.

     Treasurer. – Frank Campbell, Bath, N.Y.

     Superintendent. – Charles O. Shepard.

     Cost of buildings, $302,765; value of property, $331,125.

     Attached to the Home are 365 acres of land.

     Capacity of Home 1,200; number of inmates October 1, 1897, 1,337; average weekly cost of support, $2.73.

     Receipts for the year ending September 30, 1897, including balance on hand ($4,765.95), $213,292.31; expenditures, $197,464.95; balance on hand October 1, 1897, $15,827.36.

     Qualifications for admittance. – Infirm, disabled and destitute soldiers or sailors are received, who served in the army or navy of the United States during the late rebellion, and who enlisted from the State of New York, or shall have resided in the State for one year preceding their application.

     Keeper. – James A. Middleton; appointed September, 1896.

     239 acres of land are attached to the Almshouse, 106 of which are reported as under cultivation. Value of lands and buildings, $30,000.

     Expenses for the year ending September 30, 1897, $9,529.60; estimated weekly expense per person, $1.25; estimated value of the labor of inmates during the year, $250.

     Number remaining in the Almshouse October 1, 1897, 82 (60 males and 22 females); included in this number were 2 idiots, 5 blind and 2 epileptics.

     Objects. – To provide a home for the destitute female orphan children.

     Governing body. – Trustees.

     Value of property, $384,287.

     Number of girls cared for during the year, 76 (all supported by private funds); remaining October 1, 1897, 61.

     Receipts for the year ending September 30, 1897, including balance on hand October 1, 1897, $3,796.31.

     Qualifications for admittance. – Destitute orphan and half-orphan girls, between the ages of 5 and 9, are received.

     Application to be made to the Matron and submitted to the Trustees for action.

 

ST. JOSEPH’S ORPHAN ASYLUM, Corning, N.Y.

Incorporated, 1864.

     Objects. – To care for and educate orphans.

     Governing body. – Trustees.

     Objects. – To care and provide medical and surgical treatment for infirm, sick or wounded persons, without regard to nationality, color or creed.

     Receipts for the year ending September 30, 1897, including balance on hand ($413.62). $4,138.38; expenditures, $2,637.72; balance on hand October 1, 1897, $1,500.66.

     Terms and qualifications for admittance. – Infirm, sick or wounded are received, and if able, pay according to location.
