Help Wanted!

Old photos of your Ancestors & your Athens County community.

Pictures help us make the connection to those who have gone before us. There is something very moving about being able to look back through time , with the help of an old photo, to see the ancient face of a grandparent or other relative you never knew.  It's just as exciting to be able to see how and where your ancestors lived so long ago.

With your help, those searching for their ancestors will be able to  access your photos, here on this webiste, free  of charge.  The photos you share will remain your copyright property,  your name will be added as "submitter," and you can remove them from the site anytime you want.

I need your help.  Please consider sharing those old photos.  EMAIL ME  here.

I'd love to hear from you!

Athens was one of the earliest organized counties in Ohio. Athens County was created on February 20, 1805 and was formed from Washington County. The County was named for Athens, Greece, as the state university was there. The County Seat is Athens.

 Old News

The Athens Messenger
June 27, 1879
The wonder of the Century, Edison's Phonograph, will be exhibited at the M.E. Church in this place on Friday and Saturday evenings of this week.  No one should miss seeing and hearing this prodigious marvel.  Admission 25 cents; children 10.

The Athens Messenger
July 4, 1878
But meager gatherings assembled at the M.E. Church on Friday and Saturday evenings to witness the world's wonder, the Phonograph.  Probably this was owing to the preference of most folks to do their own talking.
