Athens was one of
the earliest organized counties in Ohio. Athens County was
created on February 20, 1805 and was formed from Washington
County. The County was named for Athens, Greece, as the
state university was there. The County Seat is
Athens.

The Athens
Messenger August 6, 1863
-
Struck by lightning - A barn
belonging to Mr. Samuel Cuckler, about three miles
south-west of this place, was struck by lightning, on last
Saturday night, and entirely consumed. The hay, harness,
etc. belonging to Mr. Pierce, were
destroyed.
- A sycamore in front of Rev.
Pratt's residence was struck on Monday p.m. but no one was
hurt, though several children were plaing near it at the
time. No rain fell at the time, but we had a heavy shower in
the evening.
Two men
near Chauncey, w
e learn, were stunned by an
electric shock on Tuesday, and one the day before, by a
stroke that knocked down his oxen. - Niether was
