Gordon, Sarah R.
Mrs. Sarah Rebecca GORDON. 82, of 135 Gordon Rd., died at 9:52 a.m. Thursday in City Hospital, following 10 days of serious illness. Mrs. GORDON, a Springfield resident for most of her life, was born in Ohio on Feb. 6, 1882, a daughter of William BLAIR and Eliza Jane LEFFEL HARDACRE. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, the Friendly Neighbors Club and W.C.T.U.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva Clinton GORDON, Nov. 8, 1955.
Survivors include four sons, William Blair and Robert B., both of Springfield, the Rev. Edward C. GORDON of Zanesville, O., and Paul E. of Vandalia; a brother, William B. HARDACRE of Springfield; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the Richards Memorial Home. Hardacre, Eliza J.
Mrs. Eliza Jane Hardacre, 87. died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clinton Gordon, Springfield, Route 1, after an illness of eight weeks. She was the widow of Hugh Blair Hardacre, who died Sept. 21, 1888. With the exception of five years spent in Champaign county, she had lived in Clark County all her life. Mrs. Hardacre had been a member of the Bethel Baptist Church for the last 63 years.
Two daughters, Mrs. J. I. Lauer. of Elida. O.. and Mrs. Gordon, at whose home she died; three sons, Benjamin E. Hardacre, of Jacksonville, Fla.. Jeremiah C. Hardacre, of Conover. O., and William B. Hardacre, of Springfield, Route 1; 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren survive.

Lon M. Houstin, 63, died this morning at his home in South Charleston from a complication of diseases. He was president of the Citizens National Bank and of the Houston Lumber Co. He was one of the wealthiest men in Clark county. [Lima Morning News, Aug 29, 1909]

William "Bill" Landers Kennedy, 65, of Walden Drive, Mountain Top, [PA] passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2009, at the Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.
He was born June 12, 1944 in Clark County, Ohio, a son of the late Robert and Catherine Eyler Kennedy. Bill was a graduate of London High School, London, Ohio, and the Ohio State University, where he received his B.S. in business administration.
He was an Air Force veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. Bill was employed for many years as a social worker at Catholic Social Services in Wilkes-Barre.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, John and Robert Kennedy; and by a sister, Margaret Worthington.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Maryann Huver Kennedy; children, Shawn Kennedy, State College; Colleen Kennedy, Philadelphia; Casey Kennedy, Atlanta, Ga.; Joseph Kennedy, Mountain Top; brothers, Jerry and James Kennedy, Ohio.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church, 363 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with Msgr. Joseph Kelley officiating. Family and friends are invited to call from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre.

Gary Lee Glenn, the 11 year old son of John A. and Geneva Knight Glenn of Medicine Park, Okla., and former residents of Tremont City, died in the Fort Sill, Okla., hospital at 4 a.m. Friday as the result of injuries suffered when he was struck by an automobile March 21. Gary was born in Springfield, Nov. 14, 1947. He attended Tremont City school until about two years ago, when his parents moved to Oklahoma. Survivors in this area include a grandmother, Mrs. Lelia Knight of Tremont City; a great-grandfather, Harry E. Neff of Cambridge, and an aunt, Mrs. Janet Delawder of Springfield. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Baptist Church, Medicine Park. Burial will be in Oklahoma. Gary's body was taken to the Lawton funeral home, Lawton, Okla. Pleasant Giddings, 80, did at 7 a.m. Friday at his home in Donnelsville.
Mr. Giddings was born in Clifton, O., Jan. 21, 1859. Mr. Giddings was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and had been a resident of Clark Co for the past 40 years.
He leaves one son, Albert, of Donnelsville; three daughters, Mrs. Viola Evans, of Springfield; Mrs. Ruth Trieb of Columbus, and Mrs. Esta May Kinsella of Donnelsville; fourteen grandchildren and a great granddaughter. The body was taken to the Jackson Funeral Home and will be removed to the residence Saturday morning. Mrs. Ina Rachel M. Giddings, 50, of Donnelsville, died Wednesday night at the city hospital. She was born and reared in Clark County.
Mrs. Giddings was a member of the Luthern church of Donnelsville. She leaves her husband, Pleasant Giddings, one son, Albert and three daughters, Mrs. C. J. Evans of this city and Mrs. Harry Trieb and Miss Esther May, both of Donnelsville. The body was taken to the Jackson funeral home. Robert W. Downs Jr., 7, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Downs Sr., Dayton, Rout 10, and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Downs of Springfield, died at 2:55 a.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Dayton, where he was admitted Friday as a patient. Survivors, besides the parents and paternal grandparents, are one sister, Helen; one brother, Melvin, and the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Brown, of Barbersville, Ky. Herman Lewis (Slim) Downs, Jr., of 825 Cypress St. died at 9:50 a.m. Saturday in the Clark County Sanatorium, three days before his 41st birthday. He had been a patient there since September, 1954.
Born April 24, 1915, in Springfield, he was the son of Herman and Edna Knight Downs and lived here nearly all his life. He formerly was employed by the Hill Coal Co. His brother, Sgt. First Class Morgan Downs, was one of Springfield's first fatalities in the Korean conflict, having been killed July 8, 1950, in Korea.
A member of the First Baptist Church, young Herman is survived by his mother, Edna, Springfield; four brothers, Robert W, , Fletcher O.; Charles W., New Carlisle; Merle A., Springfield, and Cecil T., U.S. Army, stationed in Pittsburg, Pa.
His body was removed to the Richards Memorial Home and will be taken Sunday evening to the Cypress st. address. It then will be returned to the Memorial Home Tuesday, where services will be held 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. Edgar F. Drumel of the First Baptist Church and the Rev. Springfield, O., May 25 - Mrs. Annie Fowler, 30, wife of Fred L. Fowler, shot herself to death at her home. Her husband found her lying upon the bed when he returned from work. Ill health was the cause of the rash deed. [Coshocton Daily Times, May 25, 1900]
John Bowser
John Bowser, 81 one of the county's prominent farmers died Monday at his home, the Black Horse Tavern, two miles south of North Hampton. Mr. Bowser has been retired from active farming for a number of years.
He was born in Montgomery County, but had made Clark Co. his home for fifty years. He was a member of the Church of the Brethern of Donnels Creek. He leaves five children: Mrs. Mary Etta Barnhart at home, George H. Bowser, William F. Bowser, A.K. Bowser and I.J. Bowser all of Clark Co.

Funeral services for George H. Bowser, 77, of New Carlisle, Rt.3 will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Richards Memorial Home, with burial in Ferncliff Cemetery. Mr. Bowser died at 9:15 p.m. Saturday in his residence following several years of failing health. Born in Clark Co. Aug 19,1870, the son of John and Mariah Funderburg Bowser, he formerly resided in North Hampton and in Springfield, being a lifetime resident of Clark Co. Albert G. Aldrich, 63 of West Alexandria, Oh. native of Springfield, died at 6:15 p.m.Monday in his home. Born March 23, 1892, son of William and Emma Aldrich. Was a veteran of World War 1, up to 4 years ago was employed as an orderly and guard at the Veterans Hospital in Dayton. Survivors include his widow, Francis Cahill Aldrich, five sons, Elmer of Springfield, and Albert, David, Charles and William of West Alexandria, and a daughter Miss Lois Ann Aldrich also of West Alexandria; brother, Harry of Kenna, LA and five grandchildren. Mrs. Lillie A. Bowser, 78; a native of Clark Co., died at 8:35 p.m. Friday in the home of a son, Clinton Bowser, 970 Gothic Street, where she resided. Born January 30, 1871, she was the daughter of Edmond and Amanda Wilson West and has resided in this county all her life. She was a member of the Wilson Chapel Christian Church near Plattsburg and attended the First United Presbyterian Church of Springfield. As a result of apoplexy suffered seven days ago, George W. Thacker 50, died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday at his home in the Royal Apartments at 25 E. North St. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Coffman funeral home.
Mr. Thacker was employed by The Standard Plumbing Co. He had been a resident of Springfield for the last 20 years, except for a short time spent in Columbus. He was affiliated with the Central Christian Church.
Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Eliza Florence Thacker; three sons, Elmer of Chillicothe, O., Dewey and Wilbur Thacker of Springfield; one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Crable of this city; two brothers, Joseph Thacker of Springfield and Jonie Thacker of Chillicothe; and a sister Mrs. Lillian Swain of Dayton. Mrs. Anna E. Poling, 69, of 1431 W. Clark st, died at 2:25 a.m. Thursday at the City Hospital. She had been in failing health for a number of years, and seriously ill for the past week.
Mrs. Poling was born in Clark County, Oct 1, 1870, daughter of Isaac and Margaret Jacobs White. She had lived in Clark County her entire life.
Mrs. Poling was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She leaves her husband, Charles; four daughters, Mrs. Harry Sager of Springfield, Mrs. Joe Ziegler of Clark County, Mrs. Luther Knief and Mrs. Orlie Bennett, both of Springfield; five sons, Harvey and Lester Poling of Dayton, and Isaac, Charles and Forest of Springfield; one sister, Mrs. Ella Knight of Springfield; two brothers, George White of Springfield and James White of Dayton; 27 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

CHARLES POLING DIES AT AGE 80
Funeral services for Charles E Poling, 80, who died at 2:15 p.m. Thursday in his home, 1451 W. Clark st., will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Calvary Baptist Church, with burial in Enon Cemetery. The body was removed to the Richards Memorial Home, and will be taken to the residence Friday evening.
He was born in Clark County July 3, 1864, the son of Granville and Fannie Sperling Poling, and had resided in this county all his life. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist church, and was a retired molder, formerly employed by the International Harvester Co.
Survivors include four sons, Harvey of Dayton, Isaac of New Carlisle, Route 1, Lester and Forrest, both of Springfield, four daughters, Mrs, Effie Sager, Mrs. Rella Knief and Mrs. Margaret Bennett, all of Springfield, Mrs. Bessie Zeigler of Springfield, Route 2; a brother, George of Springfield, Route 4; 27 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.. William H. Knight Succumbs at Age of 80 Years
Following an illness of one week with pneumonia, William H. Knight, 80 , of 1618 W. Pleasant st. died at his home at 5:10.a.m. Monday.
Mr. Knight leaves his widow, Mrs. Ella Knight; eight children, Harry D. Knight of Tremont, and Arthur O., William H. Jr., Russell E. Knight, Mrs, Jennie Stoneburner, Mrs. Mildred Thacker, Mrs. Nellie Stabler, Mrs. Edna Downs, all of this city, and 18 grandchildren. Born in Springfield, Mr. Knight spent most of his life here. She was a native of Allegheny Co., Pa.; the daughter of Peter and Nettie (Johnson) Knapp. She was the wife of Clinton Bowser, whom died July 12, 1961. A member of First United Presbyterian Church. ELMER F. ALDRICH, 72 of 1350 Vester Ave., died at 1 p.m. Sunday June 23, in his residence. He was born July 9, 1912 in Springfield., the son of Albert G and Jennie M. (Knight) Aldrich. He was formerly with Robbins and Myers. Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Marshall (Dolly) Lail, Springfield; 2 sons Elmer L, Huber Heights, and Robert C.G., Springfield; 2 step daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Audrey) Inlow, Des Moines, IA.; Elizabeth Collins, Springfield, one step-son, E. Virgil Circle, Springfield, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother Glenn. His body was taken to the Jones-Kenney-Zechman Funeral Home where friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday. LEANN CAROL RUNNER (STABLER) went home to be with the Lord, May 2, 1999, as a result of an aneurysm. She was born February 21, 1968, in Springfield, Ohio and is survived by her parents, Nelson and Carol Stabler of Springfield and a son, Darrian Runner. She is also survived by her sister and
brother-in-law, Andrea and Joe Chaffin of Xenia; grandmother, Gertrude Tuckerman, Springfield; a niece and nephew, Alainia and Adam Bealett; several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was blessed with many very special friends; especially, Sharon Woodard and family and Rob Kellum and family. Leann, a graduate of Kenton Ridge High School was active in music, band, and all sports. She attended Ohio State University as a music major, was very active in Youth activities, especially music at First Christian Church in Springfield. Leann was known for her enthusiasm and zest for life, and she had a growing interest in pro-wrestling. Leann was employed by a contractor at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Services will be held at Richards, Raff, & Dunbar Memorial Home on Friday, May 7, 1999, at 10 a.m. with Mr. Dave Cordrey, Senior Minister of First Christian Church will be officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Burial Park. FRANK A. "HUCK" BOWSER 80, of Springfield, Ohio, died Tuesday, August 19, 2003, at 7:45 p.m. in Eaglewood Care Center following an extended illness. He was born April 2, 1923, in Springfeld, Ohio, the son of Chester and Ethyl (Rathbun) Bowser. Frank was proud to have served in the United States Navy during World War II. He served his career as a Springfield police officer starting in 1950. He worked various departments from traffic control to the detective division retiring as a Sargeant in 1976. Frank was a past member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 72 and current member of the American Legion Post 787. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy (Gannon) Bowser; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Linda Bowser; a daughter, Sandra K. Hardman all of Springfield. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Deirdre, Todd and Jeff Bowser, Kevin and Brian Kellum and Jason Hardman; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances LeMaster; sister-in-law, Virginia Gannon; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jean Baird. Frank will be missed by those who enjoyed his friendiness and sense of humor. The family would like to express gratitude and thanks to the staff and workers at Eaglewood Care Center for their loving care of Frank. We are also grateful to the doctors who worked with him especially this last five years. The family will receive friends in the Jackson Lytle and Ingling Funeral Home, North Limestone Chapel. CATHERINE RATHBUN GARBER born March 2, 1910 in Springfield, Ohio, died at the age of 90 after many years of failing health. She was a long time resident of Eaglewood Care Center. A life long resident of Springfield, she was the daughter of Pern T. Rathbun and Anna Marie Scanlon Rathbun. She was a long standing member of the First Luthern Church and other various organizations. Her husband Vernon H. Garber preceded her in death in 1996. She is survived by her niece, Sally A. Neumann and husband, George H. Neumann II; three great-nieces, Missy A. Kuptz, Kimberlee J. Caruso, Heather L. Mellor; one great-nephew, George (Chip) Neumann; four great great nephews; two great great nieces all of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania; two cousins, Mae Applegate and Martha Fromm of Springfield, Ohio. Friends may call Thursday, January 22,2004 from 6 p.m. until time of services at 7 p.m. in the Jackson Lytle & Ingling Funeral Home, North Limestone Street.
