An old man named John Sheldon, aged 82 years, residing in Tiffin township, was thrown from his horse, near the R.R. crossing, on the Brunersburg road and badly injured. He has since died. His horse was frightened by a passing train. Died - in Denver, January 30, 1871, Clara G. Case, aged 36 years, wife of General F. M. Case [The funeral of General Case to-day (Tuesday) at 2 o'clock p.m. Friends of the family are invited to attend] The death of Mrs. F. M. Case, yesterday, cast a general gloom over the community. A lady of culture and refinement, she was well known and loved and respected by a wide circle of friends who will mourn her loss. The funeral will take place today at 2 o'clock. The above notices we copy from the Denver Rocky Mountain News. The lady referred to will be remembered as a daughter of Gen. Gilson, some years since a resident of Defiance. T. French; Jacob May vs. Rachel May Rachel Inman vs. Alamander Inman Died- on Monday morning last, Zephaniah H. Davis, an early settler in Defiance, aged about 59 years. Mr. Davis had been badly afflicted with paralysis for the past year. Drowned - a young man, named Thomas Bishop, of this vicinity and recently married, was drowned last week in the Maumee, near Independence, while fishing. July 8, 1871 Solomon Gingery, of Milford township, respecting whose sanity in the matter of a land trade the Common Pleas and District Courts of this county were engaged for several days each, was taken to the Asylum, at Dayton, by Sheriff Karst, on Wednesday last. He went willingly. Married - June 25th, by J. K. Myers, Esq., Mr. Thomas R. Wade to Miss Mary J. Killian, all of Highland township. June 27th, by Rev. A. Detzer, Mr. John Sc-eler to Mrs. Margaret Boehm, both of Highland. July 22, Dead - a German laborer named Ashbach, employed on the two-story brick building near the Union School House, fell from the roof to the ground on Friday last, injuring him fatally - he died that night. Newark Advocate William Stuffer, became violently insane, and nearly killed his son-in-law by beating him over the head. He then jumped from his wagon and escaped to the woods. Defiance Democrat Mrs. Hannah Tharp, widow of the late Isaac L. Tharp, died week before last aged 79 years. Mr. and Mrs. Tharp were among the earliest settlers in Farmer township, and did their full share in their day in making that township the rich and prosperous community it now is.
Defiance Democrat Sudden Death- Early on Saturday morning last a Mr. Ira Strough, of Striker, O., went to his barn to do his morning work, when he suddenly fell upon the floor and died instantly. An affection of the heart is believed to have been the cause of death. The deceased left a widow with several children. He was about 55 years of age. City Hotel - The village prison is now ready for guests. Marshal Palmer inaugurated the institution by putting in one noisy drunken man on New Year's day. The knowledge of the existence of the calaboose has of itself the effect to check rowdyism. Defiance Democrat Died - Mrs. Lydia, wife of Dr. I. N. Thacker, of this place, died on Friday the 11th inst., in the 58th year of her age. Her death was not unexpected, she having been in bad health for years suffering from lung disease. Defiance Democrat To Be Hung - Phillip Steinmetz has been convicted of the murder of August Heck, at Toledo, last June, and sentenced to be hung on the first day of April. Philadelphia Inquirer Defiance, O., Aug. 12 - Three persons were killed and three badly injured in a trolley car wreck at the Baltimore and Ohio crossing in this city just before noon to-day. The killed: Mrs. Helen Reisenwetter, Cleveland, O., 27 years old; Gerald Gaede, aged 5; Rollin Gaede, aged 3, both sons of Rev. M. Gaede, of Defiance. The wounded: Mrs. Olga Gaede, Earl Barnhart, Harold Fraghl. The latter two are members of Company E, Sixth Regiment, Ohio National Guard, of Hicksville, en route to drill at the Maumee Valley chautauqua. The crossing is at a curve, and the motorman did not see a cut of cars backing down. The trolley car had a trailer and both were crowded. The injured will recover. State Newspaper Defiance, O., Jan 2 - On the Maumee river, just east of this city last night, Henry Clemens, aged 26, and Miss Lillian Diels, aged 21, were skating on the ice near the Independence dam, when they skated into an open space. There were no witnesses to the drowning, but several girls who were skating near heard a cry and splash and hurrying to the spot, saw a broken place in the thin coating of ice, which covered the open space. They gave the alarm and in less than a half hour the bodied of the young young people were taken from the water. The young couple had been engaged for several years and they were to be married in the near future. Omaha World Herald Defiance, O., Jan 15 - Mrs. Francis C. Umbers, of East Defiance, died this morning. She was a member of the catholic church, and in conformity with custom lighted candles were placed about the remains. This afternoon as the body was left alone the burning candles set fire to the shroud. A passer-by discovered the fire and rushed in, but the flames were not extinguished until every vestige of clothing was burned from the body, which presented a charred and frightful appearance. Duluth News-Tribune Defiance, O., March 29 - Leroy Carpenter, 16, and Albert Merwin, 17, were drowned in the Auglaise river, twelve miles south of here, their buggy being swept away by the swift current while they were attempting to drive through the water which covered the roadway leading to a bridge. Carpenter was a student at Defiance college. The flood here is now receding. Philadelphia Inquirer Auburn, N. Y., Nov 28 - William Sobert Brasch, the Rochester wife murderer, in whose case Governor Hughes refused to interfere, was electrocuted in Auburn Prison early today. The crime for which Brasch was executed was the murder of his wife Roxanna, whom he pushed into the Erie Canal at Rochester, on the night of June 15, 1906. He killed her that he might marry May Gilmore, of Defiance, Ohio. He was arrested in Cleveland five days later and taken to Rochester. On December 26, 1906, he was sentenced to die in the electric chair during the week of February 10, 1907. On appeal the conviction was affirmed on October 9, 1908, and the week of November 23 fixed for the death sentence. Warden Benham issued invitations for Monday, but the execution was , postponed to hear from a special commission named by the Governor to inquire into Brasch's mental condition. The commission saw Brasch Saturday and Sunday, and then reported to the Governor that the man was sane. On Tuesday the Governor denied the application for a stay and the execution was set for this morning. Defiance, Ohio, - In Defiance, Oho, Charles Hart pleaded guilty to murdering the two Good children at Spaulding, Ohio and was sentenced to be hanged on the second Friday in April next.
