"ALOHA"
Football Team Roster
CAPT. HILBERT
This is Capt. Hilbert's
third year at football and his second year as captain. He was
shifted from halfback to fullback this year and has made good in that
position. Red is at his best on defense, but all offensive plays
were centered around his position. His aptness in the forward
pass was demonstrated in the Holgate game. Hilbert ought to make
a fine player next September.
ROTH HUSTED
Husted is a fourth year
man. His position will be the hardest to fill next fall.
Farmer has been fortunate in having a triple-threat man in him.
It was the offensive work of Husted which was outstanding, but his
defensive is hard to beat. His ability to diagnose his opponents
plays made of him a dangerous foe. Many of his tackles were made
behind his opponent's line.
GEORGE LORD
George was not in
school last year, but came back this fall to graduate. He is a
good tackler with lots of speed. Lord shifted this year from
full back to end, and his size and speed coupled with his tackling
made it exceedingly difficult to gain around his end. When all
other efforts failed, George could be relied upon to make the
necessary gains.
DONALD BATTERSHELL
Battershell was another
senior man who tried out for the end position. Don did not get
out for the earlier practices, so did not get to display his ability
until the later games. He is not a flashy player, but he
certainly is a fighter and is always dependable. He will be
missed next season.
PAUL McCOLLOUGH
Paul shifted this year
from back field to line - first as end and then as tackle. He
could not always attend practice, so was not in the best of physical
condition and could not do that of which he was really capable.
Paul was never a loafer on the field. He was a good hard worker;
making a fine player at tackle.
OMAR SMITH
This is Smith's first
year at football, but he certainly has been a peppy halfback and has
shown that he has the makings of a good all around football player.
While his greatest worth was on defensive, still he could be depended
upon to tear great holes thru the opposing lines for plunges.
Smith is a Junior and with this year's experience should be a valuable
player next September.
FAY ELSER
Elser is a third-year
man. He is easily the fastest man on the team, so could always
be depended upon where speed was needed. He has plenty of nerve.
He is at his best in spilling his opponent's interference. With
the coaching of next year Elser will make one of the best ends who
ever represented F.H.S.
KENNETH McCOLLOUGH
This junior played his
second year on the squad this season. Kennie was placed in the
tackle's position, and altho his defensive work was good he excelled
in his ability to kick. On the kick-off he very often sent the
ball over the opponent's goal line. He has several field goals
to his credit, one of which, in the Defiance game, reached the mark of
38 yards. His toe also added several points after the touchdown.
AL BAYES
Here is a scrapping
junior who is easily the life of the team, when all the rest were
blued by a close game he was fighting his hardest. We had no
substitute center for Al, because he was in condition to play the
entire season. Only once did he have time out and that was when
he had a finger hurt. Altho his passing was erratic at times, he
was always willing to admit his mistakes and make an effort to
improve.
DONALD HEADLEY
At the beginning of the
season this junior chose to try for end. Altho timid at thirst,
he began to show his real worth when competition for end increased.
As a receiver of the forward pass, Headley was the equal of any man on
the team. His size, build and experience should make him a
valuable player next season.
HERBERT BLOSSER
This scrappy little
quarterback is in the game every minute. He is an accurate
tackler, but his true worth is in running interference for Husted.
"Jap" could always be relied upon to get his man, and in
case of a fumble could generally come up with the ball in his
possession. With this year's knowledge and next year's coaching
he can make an exceptionally valuable man in his position.
ROBERT NICHOLS
This guard played a
steady and consistent game. Nichols enjoyed coaxing his
opponents to put the play thru his position so he could stop their
advance. He could always be relied upon to hold up his part of
the game. With his experience he will make a fine player for
Farmer for the next two years.
ROBERT McCOLLOUGH
Rob was the other
guard. This big boy is the only Freshman on the team. His
size makes it difficult for his opponents to take him out of the
plays. With three more years in which to play, he should make
the team a strong player.
The Basketball Team
K. McCollough, Headley,
P. McCollough, Lord, Blosser, Smith, Hilbert, Bayes
The boys rented a barn
during the basketball season and got a little practice. One or
two games were played, each ending in defeat for Farmer.
However, enough practice was secured to reduce the awkwardness at the
tournament.
At the Defiance County
Tournament, Farmer drew Delaware. These teams were well matched,
neither having any facilities for practice. Farmer won from
Delaware, but of course lost the next game to Mark Center.
While this is not a
wonderful record, the Farmer boys can feel that they helped boost
athletics in the other schools and make a tournament a success.
