| Samuel White, was born in New Jersey, March
16, 1758, from whence he went to Virginia; served in the Revolution
nearly seven years, from the latter State, was scalped by the Indians,
at battle of Stony Point, and left on the field of battle ; returned to
his home in Virginia after the war and soon after emigrated to Ohio
and settled on Scioto Big Run, in Franklin township, Franklin
county, Ohio. He died in 1841, from
injuries received in a runaway, and was buried in
the graveyard of Union Church, which was located on his land, and is
three miles southeast of Columbus.—Columbus Press-Post, Feb. 25, 1900.
The Lima News Columbus, O., March 12- The oldest Civil War veteran in Columbus, Frederick Newton Wilcox, 100 yrs, 3 mos., 14 da, died at his home here last night. He was born Nov. 27, 1830 in Ashley Falls, Mass., the son of Giles Wilcox. He was an engineer on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad running between Bellaire, O., and Wheeling, W. Va., when the Civil war began. |
