May 8, 1855 — At Burton, Ohio, Seabvry Ford, aged 53. He was born in Prospect, Conn., October 15, 1801, and graduated at Yale College in 18*5. He resided in Burton, Ohio, engaged in the practice of law, but was frequently called into public life, being often a member and once Speaker of the House of Representatives of Ohio, and also member and Speaker of the State Senate. In 1848 he was chosen Governor of Ohio, and served through the term of two yeais

Obit: ILLNESS FATAL TO HARLOW H. HUFF JULY 14, 1917

Harlow H. Huff, a prominent farmer and member of Chardon Grange, died Saturday night at midnight at his home two miles west of the village, after a short illness with pneumonia. He went to Cleveland on Tuesday of last week with his wife and eldest daughter, Esther, where the latter underwent an operation on her throat. Mr. Huff was taken ill Wednesday evening at 6 o'clock, and the disease developed rapidly.

The deceased was born in Hartsgrove. He married Miss Minnie Parker of Chardon, Feb. 14, 1906. He leaves a wife and five children, four daughters and an infant son; a brother, Paul Juff, of Brecksville, O., and a sister, Mrs. J.H. Pierce, of Urichsville, O. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Huff, reside in Hartsgrove.

The funeral was held at the Christian Church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. T.A. Fleming officiating. Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Hudson sang three selections.

There were many handsome floral offerings. The burial was in Chardon cemetary.

Harlow Huff graduated from Chardon High School in the class of 1903. His death is the first in this class.

Obit: MRS. MINNIE HUFF DIES IN HOSPITAL 1922

Chardon people were shocked at the announcement Saturday, June 17, of the death of Mrs. Minnie Rae Huff, of West Chardon, in Cleveland, at 10:30a.m., following an operation at the Woman's Hospital.

Mrs. Huff was 36 years of age and held in high esteem in this community, and by all who knew her. Her husband, Harlo Huff, died July 14, 1917. A son, Austin Juames, died Dec. 23, 1919.

Mrs. Huff leaves four daughters- Esther, Ellen, Olive and Clara; also her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Parker, and two brothers, Ernest and Elton, all of whom feel deeply their great bereavement. The sorrowing family have the heartfelt sympathy of all who knew them.

The funeral services, which were largely attended, were held at the Christian Church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. T.A. Fleming, officiating, at the request of the deceased, assisted by Rev, J.C. Richards. There were many beautiful floral tributes. Burial was made in the family lot in the Village Cemetery.

Austin James Huff, the little son of Mrs. Minnie Huff of West King Street, 2 miles west of the village, died at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, December 23, 1919, after a four days' illness with diptheria, aged 3 years, 3 months and 24 days. The burial will take place on Wednesday, with services at the cemetary at 11 o'clock.

The child was taken ill Friday evening with what appeared to be the croup. Sunday morning physicians pronounced the case diptheria, and reported the case for quarantine.

Clara, a daughter, aged 6, was taken ill with the disease Sunday, but was reported Tuesday to be in a fair way to recover.

An older daughter, Olive, aged 10, is recovering from what is said to be a light form of the disease.

General sympathy is expressed for Mrs. Huff in her deep affliction.

VETERAN IN TWO ARMIES
Soldier of the Union and Soldier of the Cross Dead.
  Cleveland, O., April 19.-Rev. Cyrus S. Bates, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in this city, died this morning of pneumonia.  Dr. Bates was born in Geauga county, Ohio, in 1840.  At an early age he enlisted in the Union army as a private, and won the rank of first lieutenant by bravery.  Wounds received at Chickamauga caused his dismissal from the service.  At the close of the war he practiced law for six years in Cincinnati.  Afterwards he entered the Episcopal ministry.  He was for a time professor of theology at Gambler seminary and professor of philosophy at Kenyon College.  In 1885 he came to Cleveland as rector of St. Paul's.  Dr. Bates was badly crippled, as the result of his wounds, and for years had been a great sufferer.

Rev. William Potter is dead at Hampden, Geauga County, O., at the age of 93.  "Father" Potter, as he was familiarly known, had for three years been the oldest Congregational minister in the world.

Personal.
   Comrade Horace G. Griffin died recently in Akron, Ohio, in his 62d year.  He was born in Geauga County, and enlisted in the 41st Ohio, serving until he was discharged for disability.  He was highly regarded in Summit County, and was its Sheriff for two years.  He was active in G.A.R. matters, and served as Assistant Quartermaster-General of the Department of Ohio, G.A.R., in 1909-'02.  This is the fifth death in Buckley Post this year.

    QUIGGLE.- At Rapid City, S.D., Sept. 10, 1907, John B. Quiggle, aged 77 years.  Comrade Quiggle was born in Geauga County, Ohio, and resided in Wisconsin since 1844: served as a drummer in 42d Wis.  He is survived by his widow and their son.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

 

    -Mrs. Wm. Young died last week at the home of her son Homer in East Clairdon, Geauga county, of paralysis, aged 70 years.  The deceased was born in Lowellville in 1838 and went with her husband to Geauga county in 1868.  Funeral services was held Nov. 11.  The deceased was an aunt of Mrs. W. S. Rhodes of Canfield who attended the funeral.

Coming and Going
   Feb. 22- Word has reached here from Montville, Geauga county, that the three-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Rhodes, who formerly lived on the Fitch farm in this place, was killed last Friday.  He had evidently been playing around a wagon box which stood near the house, and it had fallen over on him, breaking his neck.  He was dead when found by his mother.  The bereaved parents have the sympathy of many friends in this locality.

CHARDON NOTABLE IS DEAD
M.L. Maynard, in Youth a Mathematical Prodigy, at End of Useful Career.
    Chardon, O., May 10.-M.L.Maynard, vice president of the Ohio Typewriter exchange of Cleveland, died at his home here.  Mr. Maynard has made a remarkable record in his 75 years of life, having at the age of 18 mastered arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus.  He served in the Civil was as musician, and when peace was restored was elected surveyor of Geauga county, serving two terms, following which, in 1872, he was chosen county auditor.  For the past 12 years he has been justice of the peace.

Betty J. Turner
    Betty June Turner (nee May), 82, of Newbury, who was a secretary at the Dalton an Dijk Johnson architecture firm until retiring in 1993, died May 7 at her home.
    Daughter of the late Dale and Gertrude May, she was born June 26, 1927, in Cleveland.  She lived in Cleveland before moving to Newbury 17 years ago.  Mrs. Turner is survived by her daughter, Dale (Ralph) Krycak, of Newbury; son, Mark (Cynthia) Schubert, of Newbury; stepchildren, Tony and Todd Turner and Bonnie Jackson; sister, Billy (Paul) Conley, of Newbury; and five grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Turner, and sisiter Barbara Smith.
      A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. May 22 at Munn Cemetery in Newbury.

Mildred A. Gaylord
    Mildred A. Gaylord, 96, a 50 year resident of Munson and 1932 graduate of Chardon High School, died May 11 at Geauga Medical Center.
    Daughter of the late George and Anna (nee Hitz) Rimes, she was born May 20, 1913, in West Park.  She married William Gaylord on May 6, 1936, in Ripley, NY.  He preceded her in death in 2005.  She worked in accounts receivable for the former George Rimes Trucking Co. in Chardon.  She was a member of Chardon United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, and she was a 4-H Sewing Club advisor.
     Mrs. Gaylord is survived by her daughters, Edith (Leo) Allen of Wilmington, NC, and Billie M. (Don) Kleve of Hambden; a sister Leota Hildinger, of Chardon; four grandchildren;and six great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her sisters, Florence Davis and Dorothy Orient, and brother William R. Rimes.
    Graveside services were held May 14 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Munson.

Brandon R. Barker
    Brandon Reed Barker, 26, of Columbus, was a 2002 graduate of Chardon High School, died May 2 in Columbus.
    Son of Kevin R. and Sherry L. (nee Elizalde) Barker, of Chardon, he was born Aug. 14, 1983, in Crown Point, IN.  He lived in Chardon before moving to Columbus six years ago.  He was a 2007 graduate of ITT Technical Institute in Columbus, where he was store manager for Game Stop for four years.  He worked in retail game stores since high school.
    In addition to his parents, Mr. Barker is survived by his sisters, Brooke A. (Aaron Helfferich), of Dayton and Brittany Barker of Chardon; grandparents, Jesse and Lucille Elizalde, of Montecello, IN, and Lowell and Nancy Barker, of LaPorte, IN; and his fiancee, Jessica Burke, of Columbus.

Ward U. Nelson
    Ward U. Nelson, 71, of Chardon, who was owner of Nelson Delivery in Chardon for 35 years, died May 2 at the Louis Stokes Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cleveland.
    Son of the late Ward B. and Brookie (nee Wiley) Nelson, he was born April 12, 1939, in West Virginia.  He served in the U.S. Army in the 1960s.  He married Trudy Buttram on June 2, 1976.  He lived in Cleveland prior to moving to Chardon 28 years ago.
    In addition to his wife, Mr. Nelson is survived by his sons, Russell (Sherri) and Scott (Michelle) Nelson and Bradley (Alicia) and Kenny (Denise) Ward; daughters, Rachel Hatten, Jessie (Billy) Clark, Audra (Greg) Borders, Janice (Gregg) Blasinsky-Meier, Sharon (Steve) Vagasky, Deanna Ward and Danett (Jon) Janecek; sisters, Mavis Bear and Hester Kallimai; 26 grandchildren; and 10  great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nova Mills; brother, William Nelson; and sisters Maxine Lawson and Christine and Ilene Nelson.

Joan A. Campbell
    Joan A. Campbell (nee Altken), 78 of Chardon, a 1949 graduate of Chardon High School who returned as a teacher for the Chardon School District, retiring in 1980, died April 21 at Burton Healthcare.
    Daughter of the late Kenneth and Gertrude (nee Gibson) Altken, she was born June 7, 1931, in Ossining, NY.  The family moved to Chardon in 1947.  She earned a degree in primary education from Kent State University in 1953.  She married Barney Campbell in June 1959 in Chardon.
    In addition to her husband, Mrs. Campbell is survived by her sons, Kenneth (LIsa), of Montana, Patrick (Laura), of Washington, and Raymond Campbell, of Huntsburg, and five grand children.

    Kathleen A. Davis, 42, of Newbury, who was a waitress for 19 years with Judy's Place in Newbury, died April 24 at her home.
    Daughter of Judith (nee Shupe) Davis-Rogers and Dale and Kelly Davis, all of Newbury, she was born May 1, 1967, in Cleveland.
    In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brothers, Jeffery, of Newbury, and P. Matthew Davis, of LeMoore, CA, and sister, Stacey Davis, of Newbury.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Brian Davis.

Evelyn Montana
    Evelyn Montana, 97, a resident of Munson for 32 years and a charter member of the Euclid Veterans Auxilliary Club, died April 20 at Holly Hill Nursing Facility in Newbury.
    Daughter of the late Nick and Rose Disanto, she was born Jan. 8,1913, in Cleveland.  She was a 1932 graduate of Euclid Shore High School and married Girard Montana in Euclid on Oct 24, 1936.He preceded her in death.  She retired in 1971 from Clevite Research Center, where she was a cook in the cafeteria.  She was a member of the Church of St. Mary in  Chardon and the West Geauga Senior Center.
    Mrs. Montana is survived by her son, Gerald (Trudy) Montana, of Parma; daughter, Rita (Tom) Martin of Munson; four grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael and Arthur Disanto.

Stanley S. Wojtaszek
    Stanley S. Wojtaszek 89, of Huntsburg and formerly a 45-year resident of Hambden, who was a US army veteran, serving in the Pacific during World War II, died April 25 at his home.
    Son of the late Stanislaw and Katrryna Wojtaszek, he was born July 22, 1920, in Buffalo, NY.  His family returned to Poland when he was 6 months old, and he lived there until the age of 18, when he moved back to the United States.  He was self employed and worked in the porcelain-repair business.
    Mr. Wojtaszek is survived by his sister, Aniela Lach, of Poland, and friend, Beverly Ash.  He was preceded in death by longtime companion Dora Stone. Burial was at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens with full military honors.

Susan A. Kearns
        Susan A. Kearns, 64, Of Newbury, a 1963 Orange High School graduate, who was director of housekeeping at Holly Hill Nursing Home of 10 years, retiring in April, died May 29 at Holly Hill.
        Daughter of the late Harley and Edna (nee Lewis) Matthews, she was born July 6, 1945, in Cleveland.  She married Richard A. Kearns in Solon on July 6, 1968.  They lived in Warrensville Heights before moving to Newbury 40 years ago.
        In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kearns is survived by her daughter, Tammy Kearns, of Newbury, and sister, Ilene M. (Roger) Hoffert, of Bainbridge, and Diann R. (Ronald) Hillier, of Solon. Burial was at Munn Cemetary in Newbury.

Marilyn J. Teague
    Marilyn J. Teague, 76, of Newbury, who was an educator with the Kenston, Cambridge and Mansfield school districts, died May 26 at Holly Hill Care Center in Newbury.
    Daughter of the late Albert and Mary Ristau, she was born Oct. 21, 1933, in Cleveland.  She earned her bachelor of science at Ohio University and her master's and doctoral degrees in educational administration at Kent State University.  She was an educator at Kenston High School for 20 years and then went on to be assistant superintendent for Cambridge City Schools and executive director of instruction, academic progress, for Mansfield City Schools until her retirement in 2000.  Dr. Teague wrote grants and received funds of over $1 million for educational purposes, including $500,000 for the inception of the Kenston School District's radio station, WKHR-FM.
    She was a world traveler, including Russia, China, Tibet, Africa and the Galapagos Islands.  She was a member of Newbury United Community Church, Chagrin Valley Lutheran Church and the Mansfield Rotary Club and was a board member for the Mansfield YMCA and Newbury schools.
    Dr. Teague is survived by her daughters, Cynthia D. and Tamara J. Teague and Valerie (Allen) Garland, all of Newbury; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild.  She was preceded in death by her sisters, Carol Holiday and Joan Mansfield.

Aged Chardon Man Dies After Long Illness At Home Here.

James Robison Huff, age 81, of 115 Maple avenue, died at his home early Wednesday morning. Mr. Huff had been ill for some time. He was born at Pierpont, Ashtabula county, and had been an active farmer for many years. He has lived in Chardon for the past eight or ten years.

He was united in marriage to Minnie Bower of Hartsgrove January 31, 1884, and to this union were born four children. John, Paul, Ruth and Harlow. Harlow preceded his father in death in the year 1917.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Minnie B. Huff, three children, two sons and one daughter. John and Paul Huff, of Cuyahoga Falls, and Mrs. Ruth Pierce of Rocky River. The grand children are: Alberta, Lena and Cecil Huff; Margaret and Jean Pierce, and Esther, Ellen, Olive and Clara Huff. One sister also survives, Mrs. N.A. Stevens, Chardon.

The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Christian Church, of which Mr. Huff has been a member for many years. Rev. C. K. Higley, local pastor, will officiate. The burial will be in the Chardon cemetery.

Obit: Mrs. Minnie Huff, 76, Dies At Son's Home Cuyahoga Falls, OH, July 16, 1939

Mrs. Minnie B. Huff, 76, died Sunday afternoon at the residence of her son, Paul Huff, Ninth St. She had been in failing health for some time and had spent a part of every winter in this city.

Mrs. Huff had been a member of the Church of Christ since her girlhood, being a member of the Chardon Christian Church. While in this city she had attended the local church and made many friends there. She is survived by her son, Paul; one daughter, Mrs. JA. Pierce of Rocky River; also nine grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Funeral sevices were held Wednesday afternoon at the Chardon Christian church, the Rev. Howard H. Short officiating, assisting by Rev. C.C. Cleveland of that city.

    Evelyn Montana, 97, a resident of Munson for 32 years and a charter member of the Euclid Veterans Auxilliary Club, died April 20 at Holly Hill Nursing Facility in Newbury.
    Daughter of the late Nick and Rose Disanto, she was born Jan. 8,1913, in Cleveland.  She was a 1932 graduate of Euclid Shore High School and married Girard Montana in Euclid on Oct 24, 1936.He preceded her in death.  She retired in 1971 from Clevite Research Center, where she was a cook in the cafeteria.  She was a member of the Church of St. Mary in  Chardon and the West Geauga Senior Center.
    Mrs. Montana is survived by her son, Gerald (Trudy) Montana, of Parma; daughter, Rita (Tom) Martin of Munson; four grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael and Arthur Disanto.

Stanley S. Wojtaszek
    Stanley S. Wojtaszek 89, of Huntsburg and formerly a 45-year resident of Hambden, who was a US army veteran, serving in the Pacific during World War II, died April 25 at his home.
    Son of the late Stanislaw and Katrryna Wojtaszek, he was born July 22, 1920, in Buffalo, NY.  His family returned to Poland when he was 6 months old, and he lived there until the age of 18, when he moved back to the United States.  He was self employed and worked in the porcelain-repair business.
    Mr. Wojtaszek is survived by his sister, Aniela Lach, of Poland, and friend, Beverly Ash.  He was preceded in death by longtime companion Dora Stone.
    Burial was at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens with full military honors.

Susan A. Kearns
        Susan A. Kearns, 64, Of Newbury, a 1963 Orange High School graduate, who was director of housekeeping at Holly Hill Nursing Home of 10 years, retiring in April, died May 29 at Holly Hill.
        Daughter of the late Harley and Edna (nee Lewis) Matthews, she was born July 6, 1945, in Cleveland.  She married Richard A. Kearns in Solon on July 6, 1968.  They lived in Warrensville Heights before moving to Newbury 40 years ago.
        In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kearns is survived by her daughter, Tammy Kearns, of Newbury, and sister, Ilene M. (Roger) Hoffert, of Bainbridge, and Diann R. (Ronald) Hillier, of Solon.
        Burial was at Munn Cemetary in Newbury.

Marilyn J. Teague
    Marilyn J. Teague, 76, of Newbury, who was an educator with the Kenston, Cambridge and Mansfield school districts, died May 26 at Holly Hill Care Center in Newbury.
    Daughter of the late Albert and Mary Ristau, she was born Oct. 21, 1933, in Cleveland.  She earned her bachelor of science at Ohio University and her master's and doctoral degrees in educational administration at Kent State University.  She was an educator at Kenston High School for 20 years and then went on to be assistant superintendent for Cambridge City Schools and executive director of instruction, academic progress, for Mansfield City Schools until her retirement in 2000.  Dr. Teague wrote grants and received funds of over $1 million for educational purposes, including $500,000 for the inception of the Kenston School District's radio station, WKHR-FM.
    She was a world traveler, including Russia, China, Tibet, Africa and the Galapagos Islands.  She was a member of Newbury United Community Church, Chagrin Valley Lutheran Church and the Mansfield Rotary Club and was a board member for the Mansfield YMCA and Newbury schools.
    Dr. Teague is survived by her daughters, Cynthia D. and Tamara J. Teague and Valerie (Allen) Garland, all of Newbury; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild.  She was preceded in death by her sisters, Carol Holiday and Joan Mansfield.

Prominent Retired Geauga Farmer Had Been Ill For Over Year; Father of Chardon Business Man, Elton W. Parker; Buried Thursday.
One of Chardon's best known citizens, William J. Parker, aged 81, died at his home on South street, Monday, Feb. 20, after an illness of over a year.  A paralytic stroke on Feb. 10 hastened his death.
He was born in Antioch, IL, Dec. 1, 1858, and came to Mentor with his parents when a child.  He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Parker.
When he grew to manhood. he was united in marriage to Miss Ella Patty Smith on March 11, 1885.  He moved to Chardon township when a young man and operated a farm west of Chardon.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and interested in community affairs.
He is survived by his widow, two sons, Ernest A. Parker of West Chardon, and Elton W. Parker of Chardon; also two sisters, Mrs. Ann Mary Teare and Mrs. Jenny Ferry, and a brother, Ira B. Parker of Mentor.
Four granddaughters, Mrs. Esther Merritt of Cleveland, Mrs. Ellen Wettstein of Chardon, Mrs. Olive Compton of Arlington, VA, and Mrs. Clara Serene of South Heights, PA also survive.
Funeral survices were held at the late residence on South street, at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, with Earl Nixon, Painesville funeral director in charge.  Rev.C.C. Cleveland, pastor of the Chardon Christian Church, officiated.

Mother of Chardon Business Man, Mrs. Ella Parker, Died July 14, At Her Home On South Street, Buried Tuesday.
A lifelong resident of Chardon, Mrs. Ella Smith Parker, aged 78, died Sunday, July 14, 1940, at her South street home.  A heart ailment was blamed for her death.  She had been ill for some time.
She was the widow of the late William J. Parker, who died about a year ago, and was the mother of one of Chardon's prominent business men, Elton W. Parker, and a highly esteemed woman.
She was born in Chardon township, about two miles west of Chardon, Oct. 7, 1861, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Smith.  She attended the district and Chardon schools, and grew to young womanhood at the family home.
She was united in marriage to Mr. Parker on March 11, 1885, and three children were born to them.  They spent the early years of the married life on a farm, and moved to Chardon later in life.
Mrs. Parker was popular in this community, active in the affairs of her neighborhood and the county, had many friends, and counted among her friends the late James A. Garfield, once president of the United States.
She is survived by her two sons, Ernest and Elton W. Parker, of Chardon, and several grandchildren.  One daughter, Mrs. Minnie Huff, is deceased.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 15, at the late home with Rev. Cromwell C. Cleveland officiating.  Burial was beside her husband in the Chardon cemetery.  Many old friends and relatives attended the service.
The pall-bearers were Paul Huff of Cuyahoga Falls, Starr Holly of Arlington Ferry, Ralph Jamison of Willoughby, L.T.Covell of Painesville, and George Hagenburger of Mentor.

Chardon- John "Jack" Quayle, 70 of Chardon, formerly of Shaker Heights, died Friday at the Geauga Community Hospital following a long illness.

Born Jan. 5, 1916, in Shaker Heights, he lived in Chardon for the past 40 years. A construction worker, he was a World War II Army Veteran and a member of the Chardon V.F.W. Post 6519.

Survivors include on sister, Agnes Murphy of Richmond Heights.

In addition to his parents, Walter and Mary Quayle, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Joseph, and a sister, Dorothy Bauer.

Graveside services will be 11 am Tuesday at the Chardon Village Cemetery, Park St., with the Rev. Richard Evans of the Church of St. Mary's Officiating.

The Ritondaro Funeral Home , 126 South St., is in charge of arrangements.

    Chardon - Miss Kathryn M. Schwindl, 59, retired Chardon High School teacher, died this morning at Geauga Community Hospital.
    Born in Cleveland Jan. 22, 1907, she spent most of her life in Chardon.  Miss Schwindl was a member of St. Mary's Church, Chardon.
    She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Anna Schwindl, a sister Elsie; and brothers, Andrew, Walter and William, all of Chardon.  Her father, Andrew, preceded her in death.

    Zephyrhills, Fla - Andrew James Joseph Schwindl, 82, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, at East Pasco Medical Center, Zephyrhills.
    Born Nov. 3, 1914, in Cleveland, he was the son of Andrew and Anna (Reibl) Schwindl.
    A resident of Chardon for most of his life, he moved to Zephyrhills 20 years ago.  He was a self employed stone mason and did contracting work, retiring in 1979.  Mr. Schwindl enjoyed playing golf.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Zephyrhills and former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chardon.
    Survivors include his wife, Bessie (Beech) Schwindl of Zephyrhills; a daughter, Mary Ann Craver of Geneva; a brother William of Clairdon; four granddaughters, Tammy Beckwith and Andrea Burley, both of Mentor, Michelle Dubin of Austinburg and Kathy Conway of Sheffield Lake; and 15 great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Kate and Elsie Schwindl; and a brother, Walter Schwindl.
    Burial will be in East Clairdon Cemetery.

    Anna Schwindl, 85, Chardon, Died Monday afternoon of natural causes at Geauga Community Hospital.
    Mrs. Schwindl, a resident of Chardon 57 years, was born in Austria, Hungary on July 15, 1886.  She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Chardon.
    Survivors include a daughter, Elsie of Chardon; sons, Andrew Jr. and Walter both of Chardon and William of Madison.
    Her husband, Andrew Schwindl Sr., died in 1946 and a daughter Kathryn Schwindl, preceded her in death three years ago.
    Burial will be on Chardon Cemetery.

Obit: Thompson - James L. Hurst, 74, Thompson, died Wednesday in his home.

He was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Akron, the son of Hood and Genevieve (Miller) Hurst.  In 1951, he married Glenda Eckley, who survives.  He was a retired tuber operator at Chardon Rubber Co. and a U. S. Army veteran.

Also surviving are a son, Richard, Defiance; three daughters, Mrs. Steve (Eliza) Selzler of Fargo, N.D., Mrs. Bob (Mary) Carrabine of Mentor and Mrs. Dale (Karen) Moseley, Hudson, a sister, Mary, New York; three brothers, Jack of Florida, Billy of Warren and Max Butcher, Missouri; and 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were three sisters, Frances, Margaret and Brenice; and a brother Dale.

Services at Behm Family Funeral Home, Madison.  Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Thompson.

Obit:     Nelson Johnson, 83, of Chardon Township, who was chief of police in Orwell and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, died July 2 at University Hospitals of Cleveland.
     Son of the late Spencer and Martha Johnson, he was born Dec. 16, 1926, in Shawnee.  He was a heavy equipment operator for Hauter Construction Co. and Munn Road Sand and Gravel and a sheriff's deputy in Geauga County.  He retired in 1996.      Son of the late Edward L. and Della Mae (nee Warriner) Newberry, he was born Mrch 7, 1919, in Clairdon.  He married Elizabeth Ash on Nov. 28, 1942, in Chester.  She preceded him in death in 2006.  He was a welder for 10 years with Chardon Welding and for 26 years with Lubrizol, retiring in 1982.  He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in his late teens.  He was a member of Clairdon Congregational Church and the Pilgrim Christian Church.
     Mr. Newberry is survived by his daughters, Carolyn (Kenneth) Luoma, of Avon Park, and Joan (Lon) Beach , of Grover, MO.; four grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers.
     Burial in Claridon Center Cemetery.

Bozeglav on May 15, 1976, at the Church of St. Mary in Chardon.  He was a coach for Munson sports teams from 1993 to 2002, as well as Chardon Lions Club football, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin softball, baseball and football, St. Helen's and St. Mary's football and summer baseball teams.
    In addition to his wife, Mr. Sankovich is survived by his daughter; Jacqueline T. Sankovich, of Munson; sons, Mark A., of Munson, and Andrew T. Sankovich , of Orlando, Fla.; three brothers; and a sister.

    She devoted her life crusading for the welfare of animals and in later life enjoyed daily activies at the Geauga Senior Center.

Blake in Cleveland on Feb. 2, 1932.  He preceded her in death in 1973.  She worked in retail sales for F.W. Woolworth's for 20 years before moving to Geauga County four years ago.  She volunteered at the library at Euclid Villa Senior Center for 17 years.
    Mrs. Blake is survived by her sons, Francis (Joan), of Virginia, and Arthur (Gloria) Blake, of Mansfield; daughter, Barbara (Al) Suart, of Hambden; eight grandchildren; and eight great grand-children.  She was preceded in death by a son, John Blake; grandson, Scott Blake; brother, John Gibson; and sisters, Mildred Gibson, Dorothy Rauer and Margaret Frederick.
    Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland.
