Laomi Farmer, 85, a
Mexican war veteran in Findlay, and one of a few in Ohio yet alive wants
the United States to interfere in the Mexican trouble. Mr.
Farmer says he is ready to answer again the call to arms to whip
the Mexicans as he did in 1848. He characterizes them as "bum"
soldiers then, and worse now The Findlay Courier Earl R. Smith, age 86, of Findlay, died at 5:05 p.m. on
Thursday, January 21, 2010, at Bridge Hospice Care Center. He was born
on September 10, 1923, in Hancock County to the late Henry and Laura
(Wise) Smith. Earl served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He
was a member of the Amvets #21, American Legion #3, and the Panther
Group. Earl was also a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Findlay. He
retired from Cooper Tire & Rubber Company. Surviving Earl are his
four children: one brother his best friend Magdaline, four
grandchildren: three step-grandchildren: two great-grandchildren:
and four step-great-grandchildren: His former wife, Betty L. Smith of
Findlay and his extended family, He was preceded in death by his
sister, Mildred Fox. Arlington Richard Huffman Fox, 91, died peacefully the evening of Feb. 3, 2010, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Arlington. He was born Nov. 12, 1918, in Rawson to Wilbur and Mary Fox, who preceded him in death. On May 23, 1942, at Good Hope Lutheran Church, Arlington, he married Neva Mae Pifer, who died Jan. 10, 1996. Mr. Fox was a 1936 graduate of Rawson High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from July 22, 1943, to May 4, 1947. He served as a sergeant as an AAF radio mechanic AACS with the 771st Army Air Forces in the South Pacific, the Philippines and Green Islands for 17 months and spent 14 months in the General Army Navy Hospital, Hot Springs, Ark. While in the hospital, he learned to work with leather and how to make sterling silver wire and bar jewelry as part of his rehabilitation. He received the Meritorious Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with a bronze battle star, the Philippines Liberation Medal with a bronze battle star, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. He received a thank-you letter from President Harry S. Truman. He retired from Triplett Corp, Bluffton, after 44 years. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4510, Arlington, where he helped and enjoyed working the evening bingo games. He was baptized as an infant in the United Brethren Church, Rawson, and joined Good Hope Lutheran Church on May 8, 1943. Survivors include a daughter, a son, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a brother, and a sister. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Hinkle. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Crates Funeral Home, Arlington. The Rev. Steven C. Ramsey will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, with military rites by the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Hope Lutheran Church, Arlington Good Samaritan House or VFW Post 4510. Lima News RAWSON James Lee Victory, 64, died at 3:45 a.m. Feb. 5, 2010, at his residence. He was born Sept. 28, 1946, in Bluffton to James and Dorothy Burkholder Victory, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 8, 1965, he married his wife, who survives. Mr. Victory was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1964 to 1970. He was a construction worker. Survivors also include a son, three daughters, 12 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two brothers. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Victory. Services will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at his residence. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Lima News
