Alger Soldier Listed as Missing
Pvt. Wiber Tackett Korea War Casualty
Alger:
The second Alger soldier to be missing in action in Korea is Pvt. Wiber Tackett, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Tackett of Alger. Pvt. Tackett, according to a telegraph received by his parents, has been missing since Dec. 4. The youth enlisted in April 6, 1950 and was sent overseas in August. Bernard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bernard, the first Kenton man to
die of wounds in action. Lima News Kenton - The body of Staff Sgt. Allen E. Long who was killed in action Apr. 9, 1945, in Germany, is being returned home for burial. His wife, Mrs. Dorothy Tidd Long, of near Belle Center, and his mother, Mrs. Lena Long who resides with a daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Holtzberger, of Kenton survive. Sgt. Long entered service Feb. 5, 1941. He attended Dola high school. Surviving besides the wife and mother are three brothers, Cecil of Ada; Marvin of Dola; and Orville of west of Kenton, and two sisters, Mrs. Geraldine Holtzberger, Kenton; and Mrs. Leona Halsey of Ada. Lima News Charles Michael Carse, 65, of Sandusky, formerly of Harrod, died at 9:30 p.m. Dec. 26, 2009, at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky. He was born April 20, 1944, in Cleveland to Richard M. and Lucille D. Carse, who preceded him in death. He had been married to Janis Hays Carse, who survives in Harrod. Mr. Carse was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1963 to 1967. He had been a staff sergeant serving as a Green Beret with the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam and the 7th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, N.C. Following his discharge, he was a technician in the artificial heart research department at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland. He was a 1979 graduate of Ohio Northern University, Ada. He had a career in industrial management. Survivors also include a son, two daughters, two grandsons, a brother, a nephew, and a niece. Private family services were held. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada. Lima News ADA, Mar. 8—Services for Frederick Eugene Mayhew, 30, of Mt. Vernon, formerly of here, will be at 9:30 a. m. Thursday in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church. The Rev. Richard Hoch will officiate, with burial in Woodlawn cemetery. Fr. Hoch will recite the rosary at 8:30 p. m. Wednesday in the Lantz funeral home, where the body will remain until services. Mr.

fall, he and his wife, the former Elaine McElroy, moved to Lima
News Dorsey Nickell, 85, died at 8:32 p.m. Jan. 20, 2010, at his residence surrounded by family and friends. He was born Feb. 11, 1924, in Bloomington, Ky., to William and Zetta Meade Nickell, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 17, 1947, he married Isabel Storts, who died May 16, 2006. Mr. Nickell retired from Durez after 35 years. He was a life member of Dunkirk Assembly of God Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Asian/Pacific Theater. He loved his God, his family and his dog, Queenie. Survivors include two sons, a daughter, eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, two sisters. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Waddle; two sisters, Peachy Miller and Beatrice Bates; and two brothers, Ralph and Roy Nickell. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Dunkirk Assembly of God Church. Pastor James Gatchell will officiate. Burial will be in Dunkirk Cemetery, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9381.Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Price Funeral Home, Dunkirk.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dunkirk Assembly of God Church. A special thanks to his loving brother, sisters, nieces and nephews for their help and support. Lima News Ada Ralph Dwain Hays, 84, died at 1:53 a.m. Jan. 27, 2010, at his residence in rural Ada. He was born March 1, 1925, in Mendon to Harold and Almeda Brookhart Hays, who preceded him in death. On May 30, 1948, he married Beulah Spar, who survives in Ada. Mr. Hays was a farmer who began farming east of Ada in 1950. He and his wife, Beulah, developed the Hays Subdivision in Ada to provide for new construction of 58 homes. He was a member of Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, of Ada, where he served on the administrative board. He was a graduate of Mendon Union High School Class of 1943 and attended Denison University. He served from 1943 to 1946 in the Navy during World War II. He served on the USS McCall in the Philippine Islands. He received the Hardin County Outstanding Co-operator Award from the Hardin Soil and Water Conservation District. He was actively involved in the Ada community, having been a member of the federal land bank board of directors, the Ohio Northern University Advisory Board for the College of Business Administration, the Lions Club, American Legion Post 185, Liberty Conservation Club, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9381, all of Ada, and the Hardin County Draft Board. He was a former Mason of Ada Lodge 344 Free & Accepted Masons and he was a current Mason of the Latham Lodge 154 Free & Accepted Masons, of Kenton. Survivors also include four sons, a daughter, 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale and Harold Eugene Hays. Services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada. The Rev. G. Alan Brown II will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada, with military rites by the VFW Post 9381 honor guard. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and until serves Saturday at the funeral home. Cemetery with military graveside rites by Amvets Post 1994. Lima News McGuffey Joseph W. Latimore, 77, died at 9:51 a.m. Feb. 5, 2010, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima. He was born June 8, 1932, in Alger to Arthur and Lavon (Winkler) Latimore, who preceded him in death. Mr. Latimore was owner and operator of Latimore Roofing and Spouting. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. Survivors include three sons, two daughters, eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, a sister-in-law. He was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Teara Jo Bailey and Katreena Latimore; and a brother, Lewis Latimore. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger. Pastor Anthony Krummery will officiate. Burial will be in Preston Cemetery, Alger, with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9381 Honor Guard, Ada. LaSala and Linda Stafford. Lima Times-Democrat Kenton, June11 - The body of Pvt. Lawrence L. Lopker, son of Mrs. Iva Lopker, Cleveland, and formerly of Kenton, was to arrive here Friday. Lopker who was born in Kenton July 18, 1926, was wounded and died in France, Jan. 27, 1945. His service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Schindewolf funeral home with the Rev. H. J. Schumacher officiating. Military rites will be held here at St. Marys cemetery. Lima Times-Democrat Alger, June 11- Funeral services for Merrill Cochran, 48, Alger World War II veteran who died Wednesday evening of coronary thrombosis, will be conducted Saturday in the Alger Central Methodist church. The Rev. A. E. Oliver, Ridgeway, will be in charge of services at 2 p.m. Born in Indiana Nov 29, 1899, he moved to Alger at an early age and spent pracitally his entire life here. The body is at the home of his sister, Mrs. Roy Harsh, Alger, where it will lie until time of services. Hanson funeral home has charge of burial arrangements. Mr. Allen was a carpenter
for 41 years, working out of International Brotherhood of Carpenters
Local 372, Lima, where he was a member for 65 years. He was a 1941
graduate of McGuffey High School. He was a member of Trinity United
Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer for 28 years. He was an
Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 75th Division in Europe,
where he received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the French Medal of
Valor. He was a member of the 75th Division Association, the Military
Order of the Purple Heart and the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. Lima
News Richard J. Osborn, 85, died the morning of April 30, 2011, at his home. He was born July 8, 1925, in Roundhead to Albert E. and Grace S. Sheets Osborn, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 19, 1943, he married Carolyn “Curley” Fullerton in Huntsville. She survives. Mr. Osborn was a 1943 graduate of Roundhead High School and earned an associate degree in accounting and business management from Northwestern Business College in Lima. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He formerly owned and operated Osborn Hardware and R J Osborn Tax Services, both in Roundhead. He was also a retired postmaster for the post office in Roundhead. Survivors also include a daughter, Dianne Jo Osborn, of Findlay; three sons, Garey R. (Nancy) Osborn, Larry A. Osborn, and Jeffery I. Osborn, all of Roundhead; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Westhafer; and a brother, Byron E. Osborn. Private graveside services will be held at a later date in Roundhead Cemetery. Arrangements are by Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview.
