Rufus E. Colvin - The people of Jackson were shocked last Saturday, when they heard that Mr. Rufus E. Colvin had met his death in falling a tree.
It appears that he had contracted with Mr. E. W. Scurlock to cut down a number of trees on the lot of the latter for boards. Saturday morning Colvin and his son were engaged sawing down a tree, and from some cause a limb broke off above and dropped almost straight down. The end struck Mr. Colvin on the heard and he dropped forward. The limb fell in such a way, that the tree fell upon it. Assistance was secured at once and Dr. W. E. Williams was summoned, but the injury to the head was of such a character that death resulted within two hours. The funeral was held Monday, Rev. D. H. Jones officiating. A family consisting of one son and three daughters survive. Mrs. Colvin died about ten years ago. Mr. Colvin was a native of Vinton County and he and Sheriff A. F. Drake were schoolmates together. He married a Jackson County lady, a sister of Mr. Peter Radcliff, was in business in this city for years, held the office of Councilman for several terms and was a citizen without enemies. His children have the sincere sympathy of a host of friends.
