Avit Elmer Schwieterman, 75, died April 16, 2011, following a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born May 9, 1935, at St. Sebastian, Mercer County, to Sylvester Louis and Loretta Ann Bruns Schwieterman, who preceded him in death. On June 18, 1966, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, Russells Point, he married Nancy Eileen Millner, who survives.
Mr. Schwieterman worked at Frank’s Plumbing & Heating, St. Henry, and Gast Plumbing & Heating, Coldwater, while in high school and before moving to the Indian Lake area. He then worked at Carpenter’s Plumbing & Heating, Russells Point. He was an Army Reserve veteran serving with the Airborne Division of Special Forces (the Green Berets) from 1957 to 1963, where he was a master sergeant. In 1977, he owned and operated Schwieterman Plumbing & Heating, retiring in 2000. He was also a Scout master for two years for the Explorer Scouts. People were amazed at how he could know what was wrong with something just by looking at it or hearing it. He was a very trusted, patient and caring man and could take anything apart, fix it and put it back together perfectly and in working condition. Most times he spent more time visiting with people than the time it took to make the repair. He was a very family-oriented man who loved his wife, children, and grandchildren very much. He loved teaching them how to live life to the fullest. He enjoyed gardening, working puzzles, watching Westerns and playing cards. He was a member of the Marianists  Chapel on Governor’s Island, Huntsville, a life member of the Knights of Columbus, AMVETS Post 39, Lakeview, and Disabled American Veterans.
