Max Lorraine Hillmer, 90, of 25 Southview Place, died Friday, December 25, 2009, at Elmwood at the Shawhan, Tiffin. He was born May 30, 1919, to the late Hazel (Weaver) Hillmer and Max L. Hillmer in Detroit, Michigan. his wife who survives. Other survivors include two daughters, a sister, a niece, and a nephew. A descendant of Plymouth, Michigan pioneers, he spent his childhood and youth in Michigan and Indiana, obtaining his secondary education in Huntington, and at Culver Academy, Indiana. He was awarded a bachelor's degree in psychology with honors from Northwestern University in 1941. From 1942 to 1946 he served in the United States Army, 32nd Armored Regiment. He fought in the battle of the Ardennes, and in 1945 was awarded a Purple Heart following the battle of the Rhineland. He was employed as a clinical psychologist in State Hospitals in Illinois before moving to Seattle to pursue graduate studies. In 1958 he obtained a master's degree and in 1960 a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Washington. He subsequently taught psychology at the University of Washington, Illinois State University, Waterloo Lutheran University in Ontario, Canada, and at Heidelberg College. He retired from Heidelberg in l976. A member of Sigma Xi, he was active in the American Psychological Association, and the Ohio Psychological Association. Widely read, with an insatiable appetite for knowledge, Max's interests included social and experimental psychology, international politics, and intellectual and social history. Devoted to his family, Max was particularly happy spending summers with them at the family cottage in the Quebec northwoods. He was a long-time member of the Gatineau Fish and Game Club in Gracefield, Quebec. Max's family and friends will miss his wry wit and dry sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at Old Trinity Episcopal Church, Courthouse Square, at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, with the Reverend John Reinheimer officiating. Mickens, 86 years, of Toledo, OH, died Monday, December 28, 2009, in the Ebeid Hospice Residence, Sylvania, OH. Born October 25, 1923, in Toledo, OH, he was the son of Edward and Ruth (Seeman) Mickens. A US Navy veteran of WWII, he married Charleen C. Page February 22, 1946. Roland was employed by Foodtown for 30 years, retiring as manger in 1988. He was an active member of Northwest Baptist Church in Toledo, where he served as usher for several years. Roland also enjoyed fishing and golfing. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, daughter, brother, 9 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, William Rogers and daughter, Doris Ann Laughlin. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3-9 p.m. at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home. 1640 Smith Rd. Toledo Blade Wayne Brauneck, 62, a
World War I veteran, died yesterday in his home on Toledo Blade Charles H. Tucker, 626 Sylvania Avenue, died in St. Vincent's Hospital today after a long illness. He was 70. A former first vice president of the Toledo Bridges & Crane Co. Mr. Tucker later was mechanical engineer for the Dura Co., retiring a year ago. He was a member of Egbert Camp, United Spanish War Veterans. He is survived by sons, Charles Jr., and Eugene H. Tucker, daughters, Mrs. William L. Fetters, and Mrs. Norman F. Eberlein, and five grandchildren, all of Toledo. Spanish War Veterans will conduct services in the Harvey Gardner Mortuary at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.

Vincent , 85, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at Mercy St. Charles Hospital. He was
born to Vincent and Rose (Silvestri) Donofrio on February 4, 1924, in Kane, PA. Rocky served in the Army Engineer
Corps during WWII. He worked for Pure Oil Co. and St. Vincent's Medical Center. Rocky was a member of the Italian
Sports Hall of Fame, Sons of Italy and the Alba Club. He founded the Bocci Club of Toledo, volunteered for the
Special Olympics and helped with the St. Jerome fish fries. In his spare time, he enjoyed walking at Wildwood Park.
Rocky is survived by two brothers, three sisters, former wife and special friend, Patricia Donofrio,
and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Joseph and baby Johnny Donofrio.
A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 11 a.m. in Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 550 Clark
St. in Toledo. Memorial contributions may be made in Rocky's name to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio. "A special

Toledo Blade COLE Edward J., 77, beloved father and grandfather, passed away Monday, January 25, 2010, at his home in Fort Wayne. Edward was born in Toledo, OH, to Frank and Agnes Cole, he grew up there and married Virginia A. Schwanzl on January 21, 1956. They enjoyed a wonderful life together for 46 years. Edward began his career at Dana Corporation in Toledo and held various human resource management positions in the midwest before settling in Fort Wayne in 1983. He retired in 1995 as Division Manager of Industrial Relations, Dana Axle Division. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, current member of the Dana Salaried Employee's Benefit Committee and a current member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Surviving are two daughters, two sons, 11 grandchildren; a sister, Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia "Ginny" Cole; sister, Nancy and brother, Frank. Memorials may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor or Special Olympics Toledo Blade DECKER John "Jack" P., age 74, of Toledo, passed away Monday, January 25, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 26, 1935, in Altoona, PA. Jack was a US Army veteran who loved to tell his war stories. He was a huge Ohio State Football fan who enjoyed taping games to watch over and over. Jack was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Rose; three children, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Per his wishes, services were held privately. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to help defray funeral expenses. Arrangements were entrusted to Urbanski Funeral Home, 5055 Secor Rd. Toledo Blade SIGLER David J., age 90, of Sylvania Township, died January 24, 2010, at the Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. He was born August 13, 1919, in Ashland, Ohio, to Russell and Lucille Sigler. He was a 1937 graduate of Ashland High School and attended the College of Wooster and Ashland College. He married Helen Allene Smalley on July 8, 1938, in Decatur, Indiana. From 1942 to 1946, Dave served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps 311th Long Range Photo Reconnaissance Wing of the 10th Photo Depot Squadron. Following his discharge, he worked for F.E. Myers Brothers in Ashland, Brush Electronics in Cleveland, and BNA in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1960 he moved his family from Fort Wayne to Port Clinton, Ohio, and began working at Brush Beryllium in Elmore, Ohio. Dave started his career with Blue Cross of Northwest Ohio in 1965 as the branch manager and salesman for their Sandusky, Ohio office. He transferred to Blue Cross of Northwest Ohio's headquarters in Toledo in 1969, where he became their first Personnel Director. Dave retired from Blue Cross in July 1984 as Vice President of Corporate Services. His interests included cars (his family thought that he probably drove himself home from the hospital after he was born), photography, airplanes, big band music, and watching sports. He was especially proud of his five grandsons. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Helen A. Sigler of Sylvania Township; two daughters,a son, five grandsons, and three great- grandchildren, . He was preceded in death by parents, Russell and Lucille Sigler and brother, Frederic Sigler. Dave's family would like to thank Sterling House Assisted Living in Bowling Green for their loving care over the past nineteen months. His family would also like to the staff at the Ebeid Hospice for their compassionate care during Dave's final days. Toledo Blade SCHUTTENBERG Carl R., 93, formerly of Toledo, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2010, in the Dublin Retirement Village in Dublin, Ohio, where he relocated in 2006. He was born in Cleveland Ohio on January 15, 1917, to Martha and Theodore Schuttenberg. Carl served his country honorably during WWII and was stationed in France and Germany. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the 14th armored division obtaining a WOJG status prior to being discharged in 1946. In 1957 he began his career in Cleveland at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. moving to Toledo in 1964. While employed, he achieved the "Life Masters" award from the American Contract Bridge League. He retired in 1982. Carl was an avid fisherman and especially enjoyed fishing in the Georgian Bay in Canada. He was an avid sports fan, the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns were his favorite teams. He and his wife, Chris, enjoyed traveling extensively together throughout the United Sates. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greater Toledo. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, and a daughter. He was preceded in death by his sibling, Theodore Schuttenberg and sister, Ruth Belia. Toledo Blade MEADE George F., age 59, was called to his forever home in Heaven on January 31, 2010, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center after a long courageous battle with cancer. On November 16, 1950, he was born to George and Rosemary (Gantz) Meade Sr. in Toledo, Ohio. George was a very loyal, honest and good hearted man, who had a wonderful sense of humor and a wonderful sense of righteousness. George enlisted in the United States Army in the 1970's where he served two tours in the Vietnam Conflict. He worked at Doehler Jarvis for 26 years until they closed in 1998. His last employer was St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center where he had worked until he became disabled. Survivors include his mother, his wife of 19 years, a sister, two children, two step-sons, 6 grandchildren; many special nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his father, George Meade Sr. and sister, Sheila. The family would like to thank all of those who cared for George and for maintaining his dignity in his last days. Toledo Blade SPEELMAN Roger Dale, age 63, of Toledo, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010, in the University of Toledo Medical Center after a short illness. Born July 19, 1946 in Oakland, California to Dale Edward and Marilyn (Kaiser) Speelman. Roger attended two years at Libbey High School and graduated from E. L. Bowsher High School. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Toledo in Business administration. He served in the United States Navy. Roger worked for the City of Toledo in the Human Resource department for 5 years. Previously he had worked for the former Seaway Foodtown for 18 years. Roger was a lifetime member of Bethel Lutheran Church serving on church council. Roger was a University of Toledo and Ohio State Fan and all Cleveland sports teams. Surviving is his wife of 43 years, two daughters, two granddaughters,a sister, one brother. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Lefevre, 93, of Toledo, passed away Tuesday evening, February 2, 2010, at St. Charles Hospital. He was born in Toledo on October 23, 1916 to Gaston and Lena Lefevre. Robert retired from Libbey Glass Co. in 1978 as a machinist. He was one of the founders of North Toledo Old Timers Football Assoc., an avid Ohio State fan and history buff of the Toledo area and also, the Civil War. Robert was a WW II veteran who served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Toledo Fort Industry Masonic Lodge #144 for over 65 years and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Marie; son, Jerry (Cathy) Lefevre and brother, Lawrence Lefevre. He is survived by a sister, and three sons, also surviving are 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. died on Tuesday morning, February 2nd, 2010, surrounded by his beloved wife, and children. He was born at the old
Flower Hospital on May 13, 1935, to Lowell and Helen Strausbaugh. Tom, a graduate of Macomber High School, played
fullback on their first football team. He served for 3 years in the United States Marine Corp. After his years
in the service, he became a Tool & Die Maker. There is nothing that he enjoyed more than taking his children
hunting and fishing and attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. Tom coached in the Washington
Local Football League for over 10 years. Ursula and Tom celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on July 11, 2009.
His transition into Heaven was made easier with care he received from his three personal R.N.s-Ursula, Carrie and
Lori. He is survived by his wife, Ursula; two daughters, and four sons. Preceded in death by his son,
Timmy. He was a loving grandfather to 16 grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, and numerous nieces

Luginbuhl, 85, of Toledo, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2010, in St. Luke's Hospital while surrounded by his loving family. He was born here in Toledo on December 15, 1924, to Homer and Verna Luginbuhl. James proudly served his county in the US Army during WWII. He later graduated from the University of Toledo with a degree in Civil Engineering and went on to work for ODOT in their Bowling Green office. He was an active member of Church of St. Andrew United Methodist, serving as an usher and helping with numerous church events. Jim was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Lucille Diehl and Rollie Cloutman. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, a daughter, two sons, also surviving are five grandchildren. Toledo Blade Bernard W. "Poppy" Shaw, 88, Sandusky, died Sunday evening, February 7, 2010, at Parkview Healthcare Center. Bernard was born on July 6, 1921, in Toledo, Ohio, where he graduated from Woodward High School. He lived in Toledo for 72 years. He was a United States Coast Guard boatswain sonar mate during WWII, serving from 1942-1945. Poppy was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather, who loved his family, fishing, baking bread and growing his special tomatoes. He was born in Perrysburg on October 21, 1924, to Frank and Addie (Shipman) Kleeberger and was married in Perrysburg on June 15, 1946, to Theresa P. Hauer, who preceded him in death on August 19, 2004. Paul was a WWII Navy veteran serving in the Pacific theatre and worked for Champion Spark Plug in various positions before retiring in 1985 as an aviation scheduler. Paul was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed rooting for local amateur and Detroit area professional teams. He loved to play tennis and golf at many local area courts and courses. He repeated his hole-in-one feat on the par 3 quarry hole at Tanglewood Gold Course nearly 25 years apart. He really loved to fish and often visited his sons' lake homes to wet his line. In addition to sports, Paul loved being outdoors whether it was painting the house, gardening, or just pulling weeds. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Perrysburg, the Zenobia Shrine, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Jester's, Perrysburg Phoenix Lodge #123 F. & A.M., Chapter Council and Commandery, and Perrysburg V.F.W. Dwayne was an Honorable discharged U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a switchman for CSX Railroad for over 7 years and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida and Archie Perkins Sr. He leaves loving memories to his daughter, Roshona Perkins; sons, Dwayne A. member of the Greatest Generation, Melvin J. Potts, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 8, 2010, at
Arbors of Sylvania, with his dear wife, Grace by his side. Born in Toledo August 23, 1916, to Anna and Earl Potts,
Mel attended Waite High School and earned a B.A. in Business '38 from The University of Toledo. He enlisted in
the Naval Reserves and was called to active duty December 16, 1941, where upon graduation from flight school, he
became a flight instructor, and then assigned to sea duty as a fighter pilot flying off aircraft carriers Saratoga
and Monterey during WWII. In March 1943, he married Jayne Fisher Carvahlo. After the war, Melvin was associated
with Mutual of Omaha for 36 years, working from Toledo, St. Louis, and Omaha. He retired in 1981 and moved to Independence,
MO in 1991 where Jayne died in 2001. In addition to Melvin's commitment to his family was his service to community,
including serving as treasurer of his church in St. Louis; President, UT Alumni Association, 1955-56; President,
Kiwanis Club, Golden K. of Omaha and member of Kiwanis in Independence for many years. Mel didn't fly much after
the service, but took Grace on a memorable hot air balloon ride when they were courting. He enjoyed traveling,
golf, bridge, gardening, woodworking, horseshoes, caning chairs and was a member of Epworth Church. Surviving are
his daughters, Gale Martin of Independence, MO and Judy (Hal) Lemble of Orlando, FL, and son, Gordon (Linda) of
Longmont, CO; brother, Frank (Jean) Potts; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mel moved back to Toledo

of the donor's choice might be considered. Toledo Blade Louis H. Siemientkowski of Toledo, OH, died Saturday, February 6, 2010, in the Fairview Hospital, Cleveland, OH, at the age of 83 years. Born in Toledo, OH, the son of Louis and Verna Siemientkowski, he attended St. Hedwig Elementary followed by Woodward High School and brief employment by Willys Overland before enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving with the WWII Occupational Forces in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and later in Korea. He returned to his employment at the Overland retiring in 1979 following 37 years of employment. A life long member of St. Hedwig Parish, he was a member of the Roman "Buddy" Frankowski Post 5530 and U.A.W. Local 12 and in his leisure time enjoyed traveling, bingo and watching baseball, especially the Detroit Tigers. Preceding him in death besides his parents was his sister, Harriett Belanski. Survivors include 3 nieces, 7 great nieces, 2 great nephews, 11 great great nieces, 7 great great nephews and 1 great great great nephew. Toledo Blade Crippen B. "Whitey" Whitey peacefully passed away at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg on February 15, 2010, surrounded by his family. Whitey touched everyone's life he came in contact with. He was honorably discharged from the Army after WWII. Whitey remained an active member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Post 642 for 42 years. He worked at Kuhlman's and retired from National Cement Products. After retirement, he continued to help others including his longtime friends, Joe Adams and Nabil. Whitey loved to spend time at Lake Pleasant in Hillsdale, MI, with many friends and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Basil and Josephine Crippen and brothers, Thomas and James. Left to cherish his loving memories are his wife of 45 years, Shirley; a daughter, a son, His pride and joy were his four grandchildren, His three brothers, and a sister, along with so many other wonderful friends and family members will be left to celebrate his life. Toledo Blade Louis F. "Louie"
Kretz, age 83, of Holland, Ohio, left to join his wife on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. He was born in Napoleon,
Ohio on December 28, 1926 to Louis C. and Florence (Westhoven) Kretz, and on April 21, 1951 he married Doris Mae
Kretz who preceded him in death on September 7, 1989. An Army veteran of the Korean War, Louie continued his service
to his country in the Army Reserves. Louie worked as a Truck Driver retiring from Local #20. He was a member of
the American Legion Post #646 and VFW Post #3013. An airplane enthusiast, Louie enjoyed radio controlled airplanes
and building models by hand. Most importantly, Louie loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He
loved watching his grandchildren play hockey, soccer and softball. He will be missed by all of those who knew and
loved him. He is survived by four children, 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren;
two brothers, a special friend. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris M. Kretz; daughter, Mary Kretz; as
well as his sister, Ethlyn Derkus. Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 2-9 p.m. in Neville Funeral
Home, Southwest Chapel, 7438 Airport Highway in Holland (419-865-8879) where funeral services will begin in the

Toledo Blade Herman Martin, Jr., age 79, of Toledo, passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2010, at Mercy-St. Vincent Medical Center. He was born to the union of Herman Sr. and Elma (Johnson) Martin in Decatur, AL on November 26, 1930. Herman was a faithful member of Parkwood Seventh Day Adventist Temple and was ordained as a Deacon in 1996. He attended Rossford High School and graduated in 1948. He joined the U.S. Air Force, serving 21 years and received an honorable discharge as a Master Sergeant. He retired December 1, 1969. He then worked as a postal carrier for the Toledo Post Office and retired after 20 years of service in 1991. His hobbies included photography for which he received many awards and he loved fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son; 5 sisters and 2 brothers. He leaves to cherish his memory, 5 stepchildren; four sisters, three brothers, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Viewing Thursday 4 - 6 p.m. at Blanchard-Strabler Funeral Home (1163 W. Sylvania at Lockwood, 419-269-1111). Services will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m., preceded by the Wake at 10 a.m. at Parkwood Seventh Day Adventist Temple (2200 Parkwood), Elder George Cross, officiant. Toledo Blade Walter Shallo, age 86, of Rossford, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2010, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. Walter was born in 1923 in Toledo, OH, to Stanley and Anna (Mucha) Shallo, he was a life-long resident of Rossford, where he graduated in 1942. Shortly after graduation, Walter enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II. He married Rosie (Mermer) in Rossford on September 17th, 1949 and worked at L.O.F. for over 30 years until he retired. He enjoyed taking vacations with his family in Florida when his children were little and loved to read and listen to his old records. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Rosie; sisters, Francis and Valeria and brothers John and Henry. Surviving are a son, a daughter, ten grandchildren: and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, February 18, 2010, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Sujkowski Funeral Home of Rossford, 830 Lime City Rd. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010, at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery on Dorr St. in Toledo.
Toledo Blade James A. Smith Jr., 81, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at the Toledo Hospital. He was born on July 13, 1928, in Charleston, WV. James served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his efforts during the Battle of Frozen Chosin. James was a master bricklayer and self taught estimator and contractor. He was well known in the Toledo area and owned his own construction business. James was a published author and a former member of the Zenobia Shrine. He was a member of the Sylvania Pyramid Lodge #287 F.&.A.M. and enjoyed spending time at the Oregon Senior Center. James is survived by two daughters, four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Blanche McCann; daughter, Angela Smith and sister, Joanne Caldwell. Friends may visit Freck Funeral Chapel, on Friday, February 19, 2010, from 2-9 p.m. where services will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Senior Center.
Toledo Blade Albin J. Wisniewski, age 87, of Toledo, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, in the Windhaven Eldercare Center, Temperance, MI. He was born on June 5, 1922 in Toledo, OH to Joseph and Mary (Skolmowski) Wisniewski. A WWII US Army Veteran, Al worked in Security at the General Motors Hydromatic Plant for 34 years, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed gardening and dancing and was a member of TAPS, the Bowman Dance Club and the Solo International Music Association. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 197, the GM Retiree Club, and St. Pius X Catholic Church. Al was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Genevieve (Thomas) Wisniewski; and 11 brothers and sisters. Surviving are a nephew, three children, two brothers-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 - 8 p.m. in the Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114-128 E. Alexis Rd., with a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Funeral Services will begin on Friday at 10:15 a.m. in the funeral home and continue with the Funeral Mass in St. Pius X Church at 11 a.m. The Lucas County Burials Corps will conclude with a Military Committal Service in Calvary Cemetery. Toledo Blade John G. Ott, 83, of Grand Rapids, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at his home. John was born March 21, 1926, in Toledo to the late John and Josephine (Kempf) Ott. He married his wife on April 29, 1950 and she survives. Also surviving are four children, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two brothers, He was preceded in death by brother, Delbert, and sisters, Angela Gozdowski, Martha and Ursula Ott. A 1945 graduate of Tontogany High School, John was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed for 20 years at Chrysler in Perrysburg, retiring in 1989. John was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and American Legion Post 232, Grand Rapids. He enjoyed bowling, golf, crossword puzzles and playing cards. He will be remembered for his terrific sense of humor, compassion, and love for his family. Visitation is Sunday from 1-7 p.m. at Wright - Hobbs Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, with Christian wake services at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 22, 2010, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Grand Rapids. Military rites will be accorded at the church following mass. Burial will be private.
