SMITHY DIES
J. W. Myers, 75, operator of a blacksmith shop in Bellville for
over 50 years, died at his home Saturday. He was a member of the
Christian church, and a charter member of the Guerney I. O. O. F. lodge,
No. 306. Surviving are his wife Linnie; two sons, W. and F. Myers, both
of Bellville; three daughters, Mrs. Guy Spayde of Butler, Mrs. E. O.
Kochheiser and Mrs. Mabel Watkins, of Bellville; two sisters, the Misses
Mary Myers of Bellville and Elizabeth of Toledo; 11 grandchildren and
one great grandchild. Funeral services were held today at the home with
Rev. Hamilton officiating. Burial was made in the Bellville cemetery.

Mansfield News Journal (Mansfield, Ohio) June 25, 1955
Guy E. Spayde, 66, a well-known Butler area farmer and member of
the Richland County Fair Board, died early today at his home at the edge
of Butler, He died following a heart attack. Born in Bellville, April
19, 1889, Mr. Spayde spent most of his life in the Butler-Bellville
Community. In addition to being an active member of the fair board, He
was a member of the Bellville Methodist Church and the Bellville Masonic
Lodge. Surviving are his widow, Ruth; four daughters, Mrs. Marshall
Moore, and Mrs. Pete Pasheilich, both of Mansfield; Mrs. Clark Gatton of
Bellville, R. D. 1, and Mrs. Edwin Beveridge, of Butler; 10
grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Charles palm and Mrs. Myrtie Clever,
both of Bellville. Funeral services will be held at the Snyder Funeral
Home in Bellville Monday at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Bellville Cemetery.
Masonic memorial services will be conducted by members of the Bellville
lodge Sunday at 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Friends may call at the
funeral home starting this evening.

Monroe Spayde, 86, died last night at his home on Possum Run
road, Washington township, following a lingering illness. He had been a
life-long resident of the community. Surviving are his widow, Alice;
three sons, A. J. Spayde of Shelby, Avery Spayde of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and
Herbert Spayde of Bellville; a daughter, Mrs. Floyd Goon of Washington
township; a brother, Guy Spayde of Bellville; two sisters, Mrs. Charles
Palm and Mrs. Myrtle Clever, both of Bellville; nine grandchildren and
five great grandchildren. Rev. A H. Perry, pastor of the First Nazarene
church of Mansfield, will conduct funeral services at the Snyder funeral
home in Bellville at 2 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Bellville
cemetery.

Snyder Funeral Home (Bellville, Ohio)
Robert Dale Clever, 89, of Bollinger Road, Bellville, died Friday
evening February 2, 2007 in Knox Community Hospital, Mount Vernon,
following a short illness. He was born July 30, 1917 near Bellville,
attended Bellville School, and remained a lifelong resident. A WWII U.S.
Navy veteran, Robert served in the Pacific Theater, aboard the USS
Yellowstone. He was a member of Irvin Hiskey Post #535 American Legion,
Bellville. A machinist with the Westinghouse Company, Mr. Clever retired
with more than 30 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran
Church, Bellville, and had served on the Property Committee of the
church, always eager to help on workdays around the church building. An
avid outdoorsman, Robert enjoyed cutting wood on his small farm, and
fishing the lake behind his home. A sports fan, he closely followed
Clear Fork athletics, continually supporting the Athletic Boosters,
though he never quite forgave the consolidation of Bellville and Butler
schools! He will be remembered for his dedication to his work, always
tinkering around the farm: “you work…you’re healthy,” and how he
allowed his calico tiger cat Molly to rule the roost. He is survived by
daughters Carolyn Stoner of Mansfield and Judy and Chuck Adams of
Bellville; grandchildren Brian and Samantha Stoner of Mansfield, Connie
Stoner of Crestline, Michael and Natalee Stoner of Shreve, Nancy and Bob
Martin of Darlington and Kelli King of Bellville; great grandchildren
Kilee, Seth, Danielle, Dakota, Chris, Randi and Adam; sisters and
brothers-in-law Geraldine and Gene Leedy and Virginia and Lloyd Hull all
of Bellville; a sister-in-law Melzene Clever of Ashland and numerous
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Grace
(Crawford) Clever on August 29, 1998; a son-in-law Leonard Stoner; a
granddaughter Lori Adams; a great granddaughter Michelle; and a brother
Howard B. Clever. The family will receive friends Monday, February 5,
2007 from 4-7 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home. The worship
service, giving glory to God for the life of Robert Clever will be held
Tuesday at 11 am in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 48 Church Street,
Bellville, with the Rev. Doug Pretorius officiating. Burial will follow
in Bellville Cemetery, where American Legion Post #535 will hold
graveside military honors. Memorial contributions to Hospice of North
Central Ohio may be made at the funeral home.

Charles Lewis Spayde, 77, life-long resident of Bellville, died
Wednesday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. B. Groff, Ashland
road, after a brief illness. Mr. Spayde is survived by one daughter,
Mrs. Groff; one son, R. B. Spayde of Mansfield; three brothers, Monroe
Spayde of south of this city, Sanford Spayde of Youngstown, Guy Spayde,
Mansfield; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Clever and Mrs. Charles Palm of
Bellville and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The body
was removed to the Shafer funeral parlors at Bellville where services
will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and where friends may
call. Burial will be made in the Bellville cemetery.

morning as the result of a car-train accident. Surviving are her
husband, Rollan Webb; one son, Richard Lee Swank; one daughter, Mrs.
Doris Ann Bowman; five grandchildren; her father, Fred L. Spayde; three
brothers, Kenneth, John and Carl Spayde; and one sister, Mrs. Homer
Wagner. The body was removed to the Wappner Funeral Home where services
will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. John R. Long,
pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Bellville
Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alberta Ellen Webb, 56, of 1300 Keefer
Rd., who died in a car-train collision yesterday morning, will be at
2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wappner Funeral Home. The Rev. John R. Long,
pastor of the St. Paul Lutheran Church will officiate, and burial will
be in the Bellville Cemetery. Mrs. Webb, a clerk in the Westinghouse
accounting department for more than 16 years, was killed about 6 a.m.
Thursday when the car she was driving was hit by a Pennsylvania freight
train. The accident occurred at the seven-track crossing on South
Illinois Ave. and was the second fatality there in the past five months.
She was born Dec. 10, 1907 in Bellville and had lived in this area all
her life. Friends may call at the funeral home starting after 4 p.m.
today. Survivors include her husband, Rollan Webb; one son, Richard Lee
Swank, 831 Brownwood Rd.; a daughter, Mrs. Doris Ann Bowman of
Grangeville, Idaho; five grandchildren; her father, Fred L. Spayde,
Butler; three brothers, Kenneth Spayde, of Butler; John Spayde, of
Darlington; and Carl Spayde, of Mansfield; one sister, Mrs. Homer
Wagner, also of Mansfield.

Lexington - Mrs. Maxine M. Spayde, 58, of Mill Run Rd.,
Lexington, died this morning at Mansfield General Hospital after
a long illness. She was born in Morrow County and spent her life
in the Bellville-Lexington area. She was a member of the Empire
Church of Deliverance of Mansfield. Mrs. Spayde is survived by
three sons, Rick of Bellville, Roger and Robert at Home, two
daughters, Mrs. Jack (Sandra) Smart of Lexington and Mrs.
William (Elaine) Bishop of Mt. Vernon; her mother, Mrs. Mabel Hershner
of Butler; six grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Hershner of
Butler and a sister, Mrs. Everett Ogier of Butler. Funeral
arrangements are incomplete at the Snyder Funeral Home in

Mrs. Frank Woodruff [Emma Russell Woodruff], Resident of
Bellville Vicinity Dies At Home
BELLVILLE. Aug. 5. Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Woodruff, 71,
who died at her home two and a half miles north of here Thursday
at 5:45 p.m., will be held at Trinity Evangelical church
Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. M. J. Temple officiating. Burial
will be in Bellville cemetery in charge of the A. A. Shafer
funeral home. Mrs. Woodruff had been ill almost a year.
Surviving, besides her husband, are four daughters, Mrs.
Alexander Hedinger of near Sterling, Mrs. Melvin Kochheiser of
near Lexington and the Misses Bertha and Rachel Woodruff at
home; two sons, John W. Woodruff of Washington township and
Charley E. Woodruff at home; a sister, Mrs. Almeda Beal of
Bellville; two brothers, Ed and John Russell of Bellville and

GEORGE FOCKE DIES AT HOME IN DAYTON [Geroge John Focke]
George J. Focke, 48, president of the
William Focke Sons Co., meat packing firm of Dayton,
died Wednesday afternoon at his home, 1180 Harmon Ave.,
Oakwood, of heart disease following a long illness. He
had been in ill health since last November.
Mr. Focke was born in Dayton August
29, 1879, son of the late William J. and Wilhelmina
Focke, In addition to being head of the packing firm,
Mr. Focke was president of the Focke Realty Commission
Co., treasurer of the Schaeffer Commission Co.,
treasurer of the Union Stock Yards Co., secretary of the
Greene, Embry and Peterson Co., a director of the
Terminal Cold Storage Co., and director of the Miami
Valley Coated Paper Co, of Franklin. He was a member of
the Knights of St. George, the Knights of St. John and
the Elks lodges, and of the St. Joseph Orphanage
Society.
He is survived by his widow, a son,
William H., five brothers, Albert, Oscar, Frank, Elmer
and Walter, and two sisters, Mrs. Ross Makely and Miss
Irene Focke. Funeral services will be held at Holy
Angels Church, Dayton, Saturday at 9 a.m. Interment in

Marshall A. Kell, 74, a retired hardware merchant, died
at his home here [Lexington] Friday night after an illness of
two years. He was born on a farm three miles south of Lexington,
Sept. 20, 1864, the son of William and Elizabeth Kell, and spent
his entire life in this vicinity. Mr. Kell was the senior member
of the Kell Bros. Hardware company until his retirement three
years ago. He was associated with the hardware business in
Lexington 45 years. His wife, Rose Oberlin Kell, and a sister,
Mrs. Mae Shafer of Lexington, survive. Funeral services will be
held at the late home at 2 p.m. Monday with Rev. Glenn Sauder of
the Lexington Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be in

Mrs. Rose Oberlin Kell, 80, died Friday night at the Richland
Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Kell, whose home was at 245
Park Avenue West, was born in Bellville, April 2, 1872, the daughter of
J. V. and Emma Spayde Oberlin and had lived in this area all her life.
She was the widow of Marhsall A. Kell, who owned a hardware store in
Lexington at one time and who died Dec. 23, 1938. Mrs. Kell was a member
of the St. Luke's Lutheran church, its Missionary society, and the YWCA.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Charles Stough of Massillon and Mrs.
David Summers of Akron; two brothers, Glenn G. Oberlin of Mansfield, and
several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the J. H.
Finefrock and Sons funeral home at 3 p.m. Monday, with Dr. Herbert S.
Garnes officiating. Burial will be in the Bellville cemetery. Friends
may call at the funeral home.

are his wife, Lucille Moxley Spayde; one sister, Mrs. Mary Groff of
Mansfield, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be
held at the Wappner Funeral Monday at 1 p.m. in charge of the Rev.
Edward Walden, pastor of the St. Timothy Lutheran Church. Burial will be

Tressie Mudge in Indiana, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and
one great-great-grandchild. The Rev. T. L. Leatherwood will conduct the

Hospital following a short illness. He had lived his entire like in the
Butler - Bellville area. He was a retired employe of the Mansfield Tire
and Rubber Co. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Norma Wagner of
Mansfield; two sons, Carl of Mansfield and John of Bellville and several
grandchildren. Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Snyder
Funeral Home, Butler, with the Rev. Don Erlinger officiating. Burial
will be in Four Corners Cemetery, Butler. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m.

Galion - LaVern (Dick) Taylor, 82, of Galion, died at midnight
yesterday at Galion City Hospital where he had been a patient for the
past six months. He had been ill for a year.
Born March 2, 1871, in Richland County, his parents
were Johnson and Ellen Cole Taylor. He was married on Nov. 28, 1906, to
Mrs. Pearl Noblet Pensinger.
His widow survives with one stepdaughter, Mrs. R. L.
Wagner of Galion; two brothers, Clyde and Lisle of near Galion. One
brother and one sister are deceased.
For the past 22 years he had been employed by the
Gledhill Manufacturing Co. in Galion. He was a member of the First
Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the
Volk Funeral Home, with Rev. Norman R. Somerville, pastor of the
Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.

LINGERING ILLNESS RESULTS IN DEATH
Leroy Fremont Bookwalter, aged 64 years,
husband of Mary Morkel Bookwalter, died at the family home, 427 Louise
avenue, Saturday night about midnight following an illness of about two
years.
He was born in Richland county near this city Nov.
26, 1862, and resided in and near the city during his entire life,
making his home in this city since 1906. For many years he was custodian
of the Bowman schools.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, Glen,
Carl, Charles and Floyd Bookwalter, of this city, two daughters, Mrs.
Ralph Rust and Miss Harriet Bookwalter, of this city, one brother, W. S.
Bookwalter, of Denver, Col., a half-brother, Johnson Taylor, of near
Galion, and nine grandchildren.
He was a member of the First Lutheran church of
Crestline, International Association of Stationary Engineers,
Independent Order of Foresters, Venus lodge No. 152 F. and A. M. Chapter
No, 28, and Council No. 94, of this city.
Funeral services will be held at his late home
Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. W. B. Robinson, pastor of the
Ontario Community church and the Masonic lodge in charge. Burial will be
made in Mansfield cemetery.

Mrs. Abigail Mary Bookwalter died at the home of her son, Johnson
Taylor, in Sandusky township on Sunday, Jan. 9. She was born in
Mansfield March 24, 1823, and was the daughter of Robert Croswait [Crosthwaite],
one of the early settlers of Richland county, who was the publisher of
one of the early county papers called the Olive. Mrs. Bookwalter was the
mother of eight children, three of whom survive her, L. F. Bookwalter,
of Mansfield; W. S. Bookwalter, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Johnson
Taylor, of Sandusky township, with whom she had made her home for a
number of years. Funeral Tuesday at 1 p.m. Interment at Riblet cemetery.

Mrs. Fern Wreatha Nichols, wife of Mearl E.
Nichols, died at her home, 15 Dale avenue, Wednesday morning at 1:40
o'clock, after a lingering illness.
Mrs. Nichols was born in Butler, Aug. 10, 1890, but
had been a resident of Mansfield for the past 20 years. Besides her
husband, she is survived by one daughter, Geraldine Martha Nichols; her
parents, Mr.and Mrs. William Maglott of Mansfield; four brothers, Floyd,
Virgil and Emmett Maglott of near here, and Kenneth Maglott of
Portsmouth.
She was a member of the South Main Street Evangelical
church. Funeral services will be conducted from the Finefrock funeral
home, Friday afternoon at 2:30 in charge of Rev. I. D. Archibald of the
Evangelical church of Butler, with burial in the Mansfield cemetery.
Friends may call at the home until Friday noon.

Mrs. Marie Leora Clever, 48, wife of Samuel A. Clever,
died Sunday afternoon at her home, 167 Gibson avenue, after an
illness of a year.
Born Nov. 10, 1887, in Washington township,
Mrs. Clever spent her entire life in this vicinity. She was a
member of the South Main Evangelical church.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs.
Herbert A. Roberts of Alta; her mother, Mrs. Mary Touby, and a
brother, Otto L. Touby of Mansfield.
Funeral services will be held at the South
Main Evangelical church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday by Rev. LeRoy
Delninger. Burial will be in the Mansfield cemetery. The body
will remain at the Wappner funeral home until the time of

Harold M. Touby, 41, of State Route 97, near
Lexington, died late Tuesday at Peoples Hospital after
a brief illness. He was born March 10, 1916 on the
farm on which he spent his entire life. He was
employed at the Westinghouse plant in the Laundramat
department. He was a member of the First Lutheran
Church of Mansfield, and the Bellville Lodge No, 346,
F&AM. He attended Ohio State University and was a
member of the Ohio State Marching Band. Surviving are
his wife, Mrs. Helen Russell Touby; one step daughter,
Mrs. William Reed, of California, one step son, Gene
Purdy; his mother Mrs. Sina Touby; one sister, Mary
Mae Moore; a nephew, Brian H. Moore, all at home, and
one uncle Otto Touby, of Mansfield. The body is at the
Wappner Funeral Home where services will be held
Friday at 1 p.m. in charge of his pastor, Dr. Carveth
P. Mitchell. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery.

Martin August Remy
Martin A. Remy, 80, a retired employe of the Mansfield
Tire and Rubber Co., died this morning while visiting
at the home of his son, Richard L. Remy in Anchorage,
Ky. Mr. Remy had not been in the best of health, but
his death was unexpected. He was born Nov. 1, 1873 in
Washington township and spent his entire life in
Richland county. He was a member of St. John's
Evangelical and Reformed church. Surviving are two
sons, Richard L. of Anchorage, and Wilbur M. of
Cleveland; and a daughter, Mrs. M. W. McKee of 619
Maple St., with whom he made his home; also two
grandchildren, Mrs. James Marvis of Columbus and
Richard H. McKee of Cleveland. Funeral services will
be conducted from the Wappner Funeral home Saturday at
3 p.m. by his pastor, Rev. John C. Melchert. Burial
will be in St. Peter's cemetery in Washington
township. Friends may call at the funeral home,
starting Friday afternoon.

John Jacob Strater,
aged 64 years, died Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at
his home in Washington township, five miles south of
the city, after having been in poor health for several
months with a complication of diseases. He was one of
the substantial farmers of the vicinity in which he
resided and had the respect and esteem of all who knew
him. He is survived by his wife, four sons, Albert, of
this city, Herman, of Des Moines, Ia., Edward,
residing near Bellville, and John, living at home;
also three daughters, Mrs. Martin Remy, Mrs. John

TWIN DAUGHTER DIES AT HOME OF GRANDPARENTS
Bonnie Jean Dill, twin daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Ira Dill, of Lexington, died early this morning at the
home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William
Schindler in Lexington. Death was due to a
complication of diseases. She was 21 months of age,
and is survived by her parents, her twin sister Betty
Ilene, and a brother, Trent. Funeral services will be
held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Christian
church at Lexington, conducted by the Rev. C. D.
Secrist. Burial will be in the Lexington cemetery. (submitted

R. Trent Dill, 86, of Hess Lane, Mansfield,
died Thursday evening March 10, 2005 in Winchester
Terrace following a long illness. He was born December
18, 1918 in Lexington to Ira and Winona (Schindler)
Dill, and was graduated from Lexington High School in
1937. A WWII Army Air Corps veteran, Trent served as a
bombardier from 1942 to 1945. A lifelong Mansfield
resident, he worked 33 years with Blue Cross/Blue
Shield of North East Ohio, retiring in 1981 as
Mansfield Branch Manager. Trent was a member of
Lexington Church of Christ, and had served the
congregation as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher,
Board Chairman and Secretary, as well as trustee. He
was a member of American Legion Post #16, Mansfield, a
Past Master of Bellville Lodge #376 F&AM, a 32nd
degree member of Scottish Rite Consistory of Columbus,
Valley of Columbus, a member of Baku Grotto, and
Lexington-Shelby Elks Lodge #2554. Trent was an avid
golfer who loved life; and was devoted to his wife and
family. A true classic gentleman, his service to the
community resulted in no one with an ill word about
Trent. His patriotism ran deep, such that he'd tear-up
at the sounds of The National Anthem. He is survived
by his wife of 60 years Evelyn (White) Dill, whom he
married February 17, 1945; son Edward Dill of Upper
Arlington; daughter Patricia Smith of Mansfield; two
grandchildren Michael T. Dill and Marcy L. Perrill;
four great grandchildren Jamie, A. J., Troy and Zerick
Michael; two sisters Betty McCammon and Sue Pelasky
both of Lexington; and a sister-in-law Marjora Hanna
of Mansfield.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 19,
2005 at 11 am in the Lexington Church of Christ, 230
Delaware Street, Lexington, with pastor TJ Waters
officiating. Interment will follow in Lexington
Cemetery, where the Richland County Joint Veterans
Council will hold graveside military honors. The
Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is in charge of
funeral arrangements. Memorial contributions may be

William Schindler, 61, who resided two miles
south of Lexington, died at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at his
home. Death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound
to the head, according to Coroner James K. Biddle. Mr.
Schindler was a lifelong resident of Richland county.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at
the home in charge of Rev. L. A. Chapman of the
Lexington Church of Christ, of which Mr. Schindler was
a member. Mr. Schindler leaves his widow, and seven
sons and daughters. Chalmer of Lexington, Silas of
Mansfield, Orville at home, Mrs. Fred Durbin and Mrs.
Glen Bahr of Mansfield, Mrs. Irma Dill of Lexington
and Mrs. Harry Blackburn of Columbus Station, O. His
parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Schindler of Lexington,
also survive. Other survivors are a sister, Mrs. Irvin
Wirick of Lexington, and 16 grandchildren.

Terms of the will of the late William Schindler
of Troy township bequeath the decedent's entire estate
to the widow, Bertha N. Schindler. At the death of
Mrs. Schindler, the balance of the estate is to be
converted into cash and divided equally among the sons
and daughters. John C. and Charles W. Schindler are
executors of the document which was filed in probate
court. The will was dated July 29, 1931, and was
witnessed by L. J. Baker and C. V. Hines.

Lexington Woman Dies Here After 2-Week Illness.
Mrs. Bertha Anne Schindler, 64, died in
Mansfield General hospital last night after a two-week
illness. She was born near Lexington and had lived in
this vicinity her entire life. Her husband, William
Schindler, died seven years ago. Mrs. Schindler was a
member of the Church of Christ of this community.
Surviving are seven children, Mrs. Evah Durbin, Silas
and Orville Schindler, Mansfield; Chalmer Schindler,
Mrs. Winona Dill, Mrs. Zillah Bahr, Lexington, and
Mrs. Rhea Blackburn of Martinsburg, O.; two sisters,
Mrs. Blanche Passley of Denver, and Mrs. Belle Luscomb
of Helena, Okla.; a brother, Clayton Culbertson of
Eminence, Mo., and 20 grandchildren. Funeral services
will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Snyder funeral
home with Rev. Jack Mellick officiating. Burial will

Mrs. Nettie Schindler Wirick Dies At Home In
Lexington.
A life-long resident of Lexington, Mrs. Nettie
Schindler Wirick died at her home here Wednesday
following a long illness. Surviving are her husband,
E. E. Wirick; four sons, John, Bellville; Chales,
Lexington; Ross, Chesterville; and H. E. Wirick, Mt.
Vernon; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Clever, Lexington; 23
grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Funeral
services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the
Snyder Funeral home. Rev. G. G. Sauder, pastor of the
Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be in

BUTLER WOMAN DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Mrs. Linnie Oberlin [Sarah Malinda Secrist Oberlin],
aged 75 years, wife of B. F. Oberlin, died at 11:45
o'clock today at her home in Butler, following an
extended illness from paralysis. The last stroke she
sustained Sunday proved fatal. Mrs. Oberlin was born
north of Butler and spent her entire life in that
locality and in Butler. She was the daughter of the
late Michael Secrist, a pioneer resident of
Worthington township, and for many years was a
resident of the village. Besides her husband, B. F.
Oberlin, former mayor of Butler, she is survived by
two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Neer, of Sandusky, Mrs.
Lovina Ramsey, of Butler, and one brother, Elah W.
Secrist, of Butler. She was an aunt to Frank Ramsey,
of Marion avenue, this city. Funeral services, in
charge of Rev. John Kerr, will be held at the M. E.
church, of which she was a member for many years,
Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be
made in the family burying ground at Four Corners,

Arquette Rust Jr. Stricken at Home
Arquette Rust Jr., 72, of
120 Stewart Ave. died at his home Thursday evening.
He was born Sept. 12, 1899 in
Mansfield and lived here all his life. Mr. Rust owned
the Rust Insurance Agency and was a retired employe of
the Westinghouse Electric Corp. He was a member of
Mansfield Lodge 35 F&AM and the Central Methodist
Church. During World War I he served with the U.S.
Army.
Surviving are his wife, Clara
Fernyak Rust; one son, Andrew, of New Albany, Ind.;
one daughter, Mrs. Robert J. Rossi of New Albany; two
granddaughters; two brothers, Ralph and Thomas, both
of Mansfield; and one sister, Mrs. Ruth Lahmers, of
Mansfield.
Funeral services will be held at
the Wappner Funeral Home Monday at 2:30 p.m. in charge
of his pastor, the Rev. Wilbur Meiser. Burial will be
in Mansfield Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from
2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Ex-Resident Dies
Mrs. Ruth (Pat) Clift Campbell, 40,
formerly of Mansfield, died in Marietta Hospital
following a short illness.
Mrs. Campbell spent part of her
youth in Mansfield and attended Mansfield schools, but
she had been living in Marietta in recent years. She
is survived by several Mansfielders, including a
brother, Frend, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and
cousins.
Other survivors include a daughter,
Linda, her mother, Mrs. Grace Clift, and three
brothers, John, James and Okey, all of Marietta, and
two sisters, Luella of Melvindale, Mich., and Lucille
of Marietta.
Funeral service will be held at 1
p.m. Friday at the McClure Funeral Home in Marietta.

MINERAL CITY -- Frend J. Mehl, 69, of RD 1, died
yesterday afternoon in the home of a sister, Mrs.
Alvin (Jennie) Penrod, with whom he had resided the
last 18 years. He died following a lengthy illness.
Born in Monroe County, he was a
retired farmer.
Surviving are 5 additional sisters,
Mrs. John (Erma) Finlayson of East Sparta, Mrs. Gard
(Grace) Clift of Marietta and Mrs. Willard (Alta)
Metcalf, Mrs. Dallas (Hazel) Tupps and Mrs. Glenn
(Sister) DeWeese of Mansfield, and 5 brothers,

Tuesday afternoon at the home of his sister, Mrs.
Alvin Penrod in Mineral City, Ohio, with whom he had

Woodrow and Clyde Mehl; six sisters, Mrs.
Gerd Clift, Mrs. John Finlayson, Mrs. Alvin Penrod,
Mrs. Willard Metcalf, Mrs. Dallas Tupps and Mrs. Glenn
DeWeese; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral
services will be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the
Gordon Funeral Home, East Sparta, Ohio conducted by
the Rev. A. E. Winzenreid. Graveside services and
burial will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the Mansfield
Cemetery. Local arrangements are in charge of the
Wappner Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Hazel M. Tupps,
82, of 312 Vennum Ave., widow of Dallas Tupps,
died Wednesday evening in Mansfield General
Hospital after a three-month illness.
She was born Aug. 9, 1893,
in Monroe County and lived in this area most
of her life. Mrs. Tupps was a member of the
Women of the Moose.
Surviving are two sons,
Mehl Fockler of Grafton, and Harold Fockler of
North Ridgeville; one daughter, Mrs. Bernard
(Lou) Bachelder of Bellville, RD 1; four
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren ; four
brothers, Jim, Woodrow, Floyd and Clyde Mehl
all of Mansfield; three sisters, Mrs. Alta
Metcalf and Mrs. Glenn DeWeese, both of
Mansfield and Mrs. John Finlayson of Spara, O.
Services will be held
Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Diamond St. Home
of Wappner Funeral Directors by the Rev. Fred
Holdsworth, pastor of the Lincoln Heights
Gospel Church. Burial will be in Mansfield

of George Krohmer, died at her home, 282 Wayne
street, Wednesday morning at 1 o'clock at the
age of 80 years. She is survived by five
children, Andrew Beeburger, of this city,
August Krohmer, of Cleveland, John Krohmer, of
this city, Mrs. Mary Reisch, of Germany and
Mrs, Christina Gahler, of Tiro. Funeral from
the home Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock
conducted by Rev. G. A. Kienle.
Mrs. Elizabeth Williams Yingling,
widow of Jeremiah Yingling, died at her home,
184 East Second street, Wednesday morning at 4
o'clock at the age of 74 years, after having
been in poor health for several months. The
deceased was born in Lucas and spent her
entire life in Mansfield and immediate
vicinity. She is survived by three sons, Terry
of Akron, Edward and William of this city and
one daughter, Mrs. Alpha Harris, of Galion,
also two sisters, Mrs. Louis Hoppes, of Lucas,
and Mrs. Nancy Sands, of Newark and one
brother, William P. Williams of Cleveland.

home in lexington, Thursday morning at 10:30
o'clock at the age of 24 years, 10 months and
7 days after an illness of several months. The
deceased was born in Mansfield and spent her
entire life in this city or vicinity. She is
survived by her husband and one son, also her
mother, two sisters and a brother residing in
this city and one sister, Mrs. James A.
Gibson, living in Washington, D. C. Funeral

by Rev. W. L. Neal, of the Christian church.

Ellen Reid Stewart, died at Shepard's
sanitarium, Columbus, O., Sunday morning, Jan.
5. She was born at
Erie

Pa.
, June 22, 1822, and was the daughter of the
Rev. Robert Reid, then pastor of the United
Presbyterian church at
Erie
, her mother being Elizabeth Calhoun Reid.
Mrs. Stewart was the half sister of Mrs.
Jennette L. Carpenter, the first wife of
George F. Carpenter, with whose family she has
lived for many vears. She was a member of the
United Presbyterian church from early girlhood
and was much devoted to it and its interests,
living a consistent Christian life all her
days. Funeral services at the residence of
Reid Carpenter, Tuesday afternoon at 3
o'clock.

David Edmonds, a highly respected
citizen and soldier of the civil war, departed
this life July 7, aged 77 years. He was an
honored ciizen and through his death the
church and community have lost a loyal
Christian brother. During the last 10 years
that he lived he had devoted his whole life to
the church and prayer meeting and during his
sickness and until God called him away he
remained a true and loyal Christian. The
funeral services were held wednesday July,9,
conducted by the Rev, Mr. Kelsor, pastor of
the M.E. Church. The Rev Mr Cline of
Shenandoah was also present and spoke in honor
of the deceased. Twelve soldiers were present
and six of whom were his comrades and acted as
pall bearers. The Rev Morris ,a comrade spoke
of his service in the army. His freinds have
the sincere sympathy of the community.
