Summit County Ohio Welcome to the new Genealogy Trails Website, dedicated to preserving the Genealogy and History of Summit County, Ohio. Your County Host is K. L. Ortman. I adopted this county because all of my grandparents and many cousins came here in the early 1900s, mostly to work in the rubber and oil industries of Akron. Surnames include: Bair, Dill, Doran, Hornyak, Ortman. You are welcome to browse the information on these pages and at the many links provided to garner the data needed to continue your research into your family history. However, please remember that this information, in many cases, represents years of painstaking research on the part of Illinois Trails hosts and their many generous volunteers who have donated their information to this site. You can show your respect for these efforts by not taking things to use on other websites and/or to claim as your own (see below). Thank you in advance for your consideration. County Data County OriginsMost of Summit County was originally part of the Western Reserve, territory claimed by the Colony of Connecticut and later succeeded to the United States as part of the Northwest Territory. It was established March 3, 1840 by taking townships from Stark, Medina and Portage Counties, and was so named because it was located at Portage Summit, the highest point along the Ohio-Erie Canal. The county seat is Akron.
