County Data

County Origins

Most of Summit County was originally part of the Western Reserve, territory claimed by the Colony of Connecticut and later succeeded to the United States as part of the Northwest Territory.  It was established March 3, 1840 by taking townships from Stark, Medina and Portage Counties, and was so named because it was located at Portage Summit, the highest point along the Ohio-Erie Canal.   The county seat is Akron.
