Eugene Osting, 90, died
Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010.
Survivors include: Three daughters and a son, nine grandchildren
and fifteen great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death
by his wife of 57 years, Edna.
He served in the South Pacific in WW II as a Tech SGT. U S Army 1037th
Material Squadron 13th Air Force.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday
at St. John's Catholic Church in Delphos. The Rev. Melvin Verhoff will
officiate. The Delphos Veterans Council will conduct military rites at
the church following the service. Burial will follow at Resurrection
Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2-8 p.m. at Harter and Schier
Funeral Home with a parish wake held at 7:30.

Delbert Eugene "V W Wildman"
Jewell, 58, of Van Wert, died at 6:05 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at
Van Wert Manor Nursing Home, Van Wert.
He was born on Feb. 16, 1952, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Ernest D.
Jewell and Carol Joan (Wolfcale).
Survivors include a son: an adopted son: a stepson:
one brother: three sisters: two grandchildren, three
step-grandchildren: a sister-in-law: one brother-in-law: and the
mother of his sons.
He was preceded in death by a child, Angela Saco, who died Dec. 22,
1997, one brother: Clyde Alan Jewell, who died July 12, 2001, and a
sister: Cynthia Ann Kline, who died May 24, 2008.
He was a retired truck driver, a 1972 graduate of Hollywood Hill High
School in Hollywood, Fla., a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War; a
life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 in Van Wert and
American Legion Post 178, and a member of the Van Wert Eagles Aerie.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Cowan &
Son Funeral Home, Van Wert. The Rev. Paul W. Miller will officiate.
Burial will be in Auglaize Chapel Cemetery, Washington Township,
Oakwood, Ohio. Military graveside services will be conducted by the
combined posts of American Legion 178 and V.F.W. Post 5803. Calling
hours are 2-8 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. until time of service on
Friday.
Preferred memorial is the American Diabetes Association.

Donald
Eugene Crone, 82, of Van Wert, died at 3:40 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19,
2010, at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert.
He was born March 14, 1927, in Ohio City, Ohio, to the late Everett
Gaylor Crone and Florence Edith (Debolt). On June 21, 1947, he married
his wife. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons: one sister, four
grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by six children and a brother, Edgar Dean Crone.
Mr. Crone was a retired laborer in the auto industry. He retired on
March 30, 1990, from the Chrysler-Amplex plant in Van Wert. He was a
member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a 1945 York High School
graduate where he played basketball and baseball.
He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees from 1945-1946. His Navy training
was at the U.S. Navy base in Chicago, Ill., and the Seabees base at
Camp Parks, Shoemaker, Calif. After training, he was sent to Guam by
the way of Pearl Harbor and Japan, but did not get off the boat. After
he was discharged from the Seebees, he played semi-pro baseball for
several years with the Van Wert Burts and Rockford American Legion
Teams. He also was a high school basketball referee for a number of
years, having retired from the YMCA leagues at that time. He coached
Little League and Pony League baseball for 11 years in a row.
He was a member of Van Wert Lodge 218 F. & A. M., Scottish Rite
Valley of Fort Wayne, Ind., Mizpah Shrine of Fort Wayne, Ind., Mizpah
Shrine-Horse Patrol and a 32 degree Mason, Mr. Crone was past post
commander and life member of American Legion Post 178, Van Wert and a
life member of Robert G. Longwell Post 5803, Veterans of Foreign Wars,
member of Voiture 154 40 & 8, AMVETS.
He was also a member of Eagles Aerie 1292 and Moose Lodge 1320, Elks,
Van Wert County Outdoormen's Club, Fraternal Order of Police, the
National Rifle Association and the U.S. Official Language of the
U.S.A. is English. Mr. Crone served on the Van Wert City Council from
1970-1975 and was a former Republican Central Committee chair.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at Cowan
& Son Funeral Home, Van Wert. The Rev. Mary Ann Tomlinson of
Bethel United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in
Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert. Military services at graveside will be
conducted by the combined Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion
Posts of Van Wert. Calling hours are 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. on Monday,
Feb. 22, 2010. A Masonic service is planned for 8 p.m. on Monday.
Preferred memorial is Shriner's Crippled Children.

VAN WERT, Ohio - Dale A. Shumaker, 88,
of Van Wert, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Van Wert
County Hospital.
He was born Jan. 29, 1922, in Carey, Ohio, to the late Lillian (Quackenbush)
Shumaker and Frank Shumaker. His wife, Tulvina M. (Knittle) Shumaker,
died Sept. 15, 1995.
Survivors include his three children, five grandchildren, and six
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold, Carl, Anson, Gene
and Everett Shumaker; his sisters, Margie Anderson, Ruth Feasby, Grave
Evans and Pauline Pollock; a grandchild, and a great-grandchild.
He was a retired truck driver from Borden Cheese and Continental Can
Company, both of Van Wert, after 30 plus years of service. He was a
veteran of U.S. Army serving during WW II in the Rhineland and Central
Europe where he received 2 Bronze Stars. He was a lifetime member of
the Van Wert VFW post and a member of the Teamsters and U.M.A.W.
Unions.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6 at Alspach-Gearhart
Funeral Home, Van Wert. The Rev. Paul Miller will officiate. Burial
will take place at a later date at Ridge Cemetery, Middle Point.
Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6 at the funeral
home.

WERT — Leo J. (Jake) Saylor, 72, of here, died at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday
at Van Crest Nursing Home. He was born Feb. 24, 1919, in Sherwood, the son of
Clayton and Ethel Balser Saylor. On Sept. 14, 1965, he married Faye Brandenburg
Thomas Saylor, who survives.
Mr.
Saylor retired in 1981 after 34 years with Continental Can, Company. He was a
veteran of the Army, serving during World War II and was a life member of
VFW Post 5803.
