 Richard G. Shrider, 74, of Rockford, died at 8:05 p.m. Jan. 1 at Van Crest Nursing Home, Van Wert.
 He was born April 21, 1928, in Sylvania, to Kenneth R. and Helen (Kerns) Shrider.
 Surviving are three sons, two sisters, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
 He retired from Huffy’s in Celina and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Rockford, the United States Trotting Association and the Mercer County Horsemen Association for the past 30 years.
 Services are 1 p.m. Monday at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home, Rockford, the Rev. Mike Berne officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Cemetery, Middle Point.  Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and after noon Monday at the funeral home.

Eugene Osting, 90, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010.

Survivors include: Three daughters and a  son, nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Edna.

He served in the South Pacific in WW II as a Tech SGT. U S Army 1037th Material Squadron 13th Air Force. 
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Delphos. The Rev. Melvin Verhoff will officiate. The Delphos Veterans Council will conduct military rites at the church following the service. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. 
Visitation will be held Friday from 2-8 p.m. at Harter and Schier Funeral Home with a parish wake held at 7:30.

Delbert Eugene "V W Wildman" Jewell, 58, of Van Wert, died at 6:05 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at Van Wert Manor Nursing Home, Van Wert.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1952, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Ernest D. Jewell and Carol Joan (Wolfcale).

Survivors include a son:  an adopted son:  a stepson:  one brother:  three sisters: two grandchildren,  three step-grandchildren:  a sister-in-law: one brother-in-law: and the mother of his sons.

He was preceded in death by a child, Angela Saco, who died Dec. 22, 1997, one brother: Clyde Alan Jewell, who died July 12, 2001, and a sister: Cynthia Ann Kline, who died May 24, 2008.

He was a retired truck driver, a 1972 graduate of Hollywood Hill High School in Hollywood, Fla., a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War; a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 in Van Wert and American Legion Post 178, and a member of the Van Wert Eagles Aerie.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert. The Rev. Paul W. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Auglaize Chapel Cemetery, Washington Township, Oakwood, Ohio. Military graveside services will be conducted by the combined posts of American Legion 178 and V.F.W. Post 5803. Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. until time of service on Friday. 
Preferred memorial is the American Diabetes Association.

 Donald Eugene Crone, 82, of Van Wert, died at 3:40 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert.

He was born March 14, 1927, in Ohio City, Ohio, to the late Everett Gaylor Crone and Florence Edith (Debolt). On June 21, 1947, he married his wife. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons: one sister,  four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six children and a brother, Edgar Dean Crone.
Mr. Crone was a retired laborer in the auto industry. He retired on March 30, 1990, from the Chrysler-Amplex plant in Van Wert. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a 1945 York High School graduate where he played basketball and baseball.

He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees from 1945-1946. His Navy training was at the U.S. Navy base in Chicago, Ill., and the Seabees base at Camp Parks, Shoemaker, Calif. After training, he was sent to Guam by the way of Pearl Harbor and Japan, but did not get off the boat. After he was discharged from the Seebees, he played semi-pro baseball for several years with the Van Wert Burts and Rockford American Legion Teams. He also was a high school basketball referee for a number of years, having retired from the YMCA leagues at that time. He coached Little League and Pony League baseball for 11 years in a row.

He was a member of Van Wert Lodge 218 F. & A. M., Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne, Ind., Mizpah Shrine of Fort Wayne, Ind., Mizpah Shrine-Horse Patrol and a 32 degree Mason, Mr. Crone was past post commander and life member of American Legion Post 178, Van Wert and a life member of Robert G. Longwell Post 5803, Veterans of Foreign Wars, member of Voiture 154 40 & 8, AMVETS.

He was also a member of Eagles Aerie 1292 and Moose Lodge 1320, Elks, Van Wert County Outdoormen's Club, Fraternal Order of Police, the National Rifle Association and the U.S. Official Language of the U.S.A. is English. Mr. Crone served on the Van Wert City Council from 1970-1975 and was a former Republican Central Committee chair.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert. The Rev. Mary Ann Tomlinson of Bethel United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert. Military services at graveside will be conducted by the combined Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts of Van Wert. Calling hours are 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010. A Masonic service is planned for 8 p.m. on Monday. Preferred memorial is Shriner's Crippled Children.

VAN WERT, Ohio - Dale A. Shumaker, 88, of Van Wert, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Van Wert County Hospital.

He was born Jan. 29, 1922, in Carey, Ohio, to the late Lillian (Quackenbush) Shumaker and Frank Shumaker. His wife, Tulvina M. (Knittle) Shumaker, died Sept. 15, 1995.

Survivors include his three children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold, Carl, Anson, Gene and Everett Shumaker; his sisters, Margie Anderson, Ruth Feasby, Grave Evans and Pauline Pollock; a grandchild, and a great-grandchild.

He was a retired truck driver from Borden Cheese and Continental Can Company, both of Van Wert, after 30 plus years of service. He was a veteran of U.S. Army serving during WW II in the Rhineland and Central Europe where he received 2 Bronze Stars. He was a lifetime member of the Van Wert VFW post and a member of the Teamsters and U.M.A.W. Unions.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6 at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert. The Rev. Paul Miller will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date at Ridge Cemetery, Middle Point. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6 at the funeral home. 
Preferred memorial is Ft. Wayne V.A. Hospital.

VAN WERT - Earl W. Cowell, 73, of here, died at 10 a.m. Sunday at Vancrest Nursing Home. He was born Dec. 22, 1912, in Tully Township , Van Wert, County, the son of Samuel and Chloe Hummel Cowell. On March 26, 1941, he married Geraldine E. Brown, who survives. 
Mr. Cowell retired in 1976 from Kennedy Manufacturing Co. of Van Wert. He was a member of the Van Wert Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a World War II  U.S. Army veteran. 
Survivors also include one son, Ronald Cowell of Paulding; one daughter, Gloria Cowell of Van Wert; two grandsons; and one sister, Mrs. Tennyson (Mildred) Corathers of Van Wert. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cowan and Son Funeral Home, Van Wert, Rev. Robert E. Linter officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.

Vaughn O. Starkey, 90, died at 5:66 p.m. June 20, 2001, at Van Crest Health Care Center Van Wert. He was born May 26. 1911, in Scott to Benjamin and Etta Mae Walton Starkey On Oct 13,1940, he married Evelyn Mosier, who died Feb. 19, 2001.
Mr. Starkey retired from Peoples  Bank and Trust Co., Van Wert. He was a member of First United Methodist Church , Van Wert He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion Post 178, Van Wirt He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in France and Germany. 
Survivors include a nephew,  and a niece. 
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gordon and Carl Starkey: and a sister. F Marie Starkey. Services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Funeral Home, Van Wert. The
Rev. Paul Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery, Van Wert. 
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p-m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions, may be made to First United, Methodist Church or the charity of the donor's choice.

Harold J. "PETE" Lisk, 79, at 7;67 p.m. Jun 19, 2001, at Van Wert County Hosptal, Van Wert. He was bornMarch 19, 1922, in Delphos to John and Elizabeth Kundert Lisk. He married Mary Catherine Mueller, who preceded him in death. He then married Dorothy M. Birkmeier, who also preceded him in death. On June 27,1998. he married Alice Hartlieb Dirham, who survives. 
Mr. Lisk retired as assistant vice president of the Business Men's Federal Savings Bank,Cincinnati.. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Van Wert, and its Golden Oldies group. He was a member of American Legion Pest 178, Van Wert, and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 471, Debhos. He was a Coast Guard veteran World War II.   Survivors also include four sons, a stepson, two step-daughters,; a sister, Evelyn McNeff of Lima ; and three grandchildren and 12 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons. Mark and Stephen Lisk; a daughter, Mary G. Lisk; and a stepson, James Woulfe. 
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 am Saturday at St. Marv of the Assumption Catholic Church. Van Wert. The Rev. Joseph M. Schmdzer will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert, with military riles by American Legion Post 178 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803. Friends may call from 2 to 9 pin today at Brickner Funeral Home, Van Wert, where a parish vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

Robert G. Bailey, 79, died at 2:55 p.m. March 20, 1998, at Naples Community Hospital , Naples ,Fla. He was born Sept. 14, 1918, in Geneva . Ind. , to Daniel J. and Minerva Fox Bailey. On Sep. 29, 1931, he married Jane A. Stetler, who survives. Mr. Bailey was retired as a manufacturer's representative for men's clothing wear. He was a member of First United Methodist Church , Van Wert. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He was a prisoner of war for two years and received a Purple Heart in 1998.He was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge Van Wert. He was a member of the American Legion on and Woods Golf Course, both in Van Wert. 
Survivors include two sons, and a daughter, a brother, Harold of Sidney; a sister, Margaret Tabler of Van Wert and four grandchildren. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert. The Rev. James C. Dunaway will officiate Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery , Van Wert, with graveside military services by the American Legion, both of Van Wert. Friends may call from 2 to 8 !.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where an Elks memorial service will begin at 7:30 p.m. 
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Van Wert County Heart Association.

VAN WERT — Leo J. (Jake) Saylor, 72, of here, died at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at Van Crest Nursing Home. He was born Feb. 24, 1919, in Sherwood, the son of Clayton and Ethel Balser Saylor. On Sept. 14, 1965, he married Faye Brandenburg Thomas Saylor, who survives.

Mr. Saylor retired in 1981 after 34 years with Continental Can, Company. He was a veteran of the Army, serving during World War II and was a life member of
VFW Post 5803.

Other survivors include one son, Jerry Lee Saylor of Sherwood; one stepson, Howard McDonald of Van Wert; two step-daughters, Ida McDonald, and Mrs. Glenn (Lois) Allen, Jr., both of Van Wert; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Virgil  and Jay Saylor and four sisters, Fanchon  Nellie, Ila  and Mary. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, with Rev. Paul Miller officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery . Friends may call 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

James  A Tierney,  73, of New Haven Ind. formerly, of Van Wert, died at 6.30 p m June 6. 1993 Veterans Administration Hospital in Ft. Wayne, Ind. He was born Dec 20,1919, in  Roxbury, Vt., . to Joseph C. and Ella Josephine Pinkham Tierney On Jan 28, 1950. He married Mary Bates who survives. Mr. Tierney was retired as a self-employed tool and die maker.

He was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of American Legion Post 330. Order of the Eastern Star 593 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1480 of New Haven. and Maumee Lodge 725 of Fort Wayne He attended Maples United Methodist Church . Survivors also include a son, Michael  of New Haven ; two brothers, Robert  of Northfield Falls. Vt. and William of Cormish, N.H .seven sisters. Louise, and  Pauline both of Cornish, N.H., Katherine of Lakeland, Fla., 
Ruth and Shirley both of Charleston, N. H. Marion of Wilder, Vt., and Barbara of Portsmouth, Va., and a grandchild. He was  preceded in death by a brother Edward Tierney. Services will be  at 2 p m. Wednesday at Cowan and Son Funeral Home Van Wert. The Rev. Vernon Peterson will officiate. Burial will be made in  Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p .m.  Tuesday at the funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Allen County ,Ind. Cancer Society in Fort Wayne .

Melville E. Brown, 81, died at 2:45 p.m. Feb. 8, 2000, at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert. He was born Sept. 3, 1918 in Van Wert County to George W and Bess Shoop Brown. On Nov. 27, 1948, he married Marguerite Conn, who survives.  Mr. Brown retired in 1977 from the Ohio Department of/ Transportation and was a farmer He attended First United Methodist Church, Van Wert He was a former member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1197 Van Wert He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include a sister, Mary Louise Sheets of Convoy. 
He was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Brown; and two sisters, Mary Turner and Isabel Price. Services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert. The Rev. Paul Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert, with military rites by American Legion Post 178 and veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and € to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Anthony R. “Tony” Clouse, 67, of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Van Wert, died at 6:25 p.m. April 14, 2011, at Fort Sanders Medical Center, Knoxville, Tenn.  Services will begin at noon   Saturday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home &   Crematory, Van Wert. The Rev. William Haggis will officiate.
