Wood County Military Obituaries & Funeral & Death Notices
| The Wood County Herald Dec 14, 1894 Henry J. Barton died at his residence on north Main-st, Friday Dec 7, 1894, age 55 years; from pleuro pneumonia. He has not been in good health for quite a number of years, and had been gradually failing until he was called to take up this last march; face the great Conquerer of all soldiers, and lay down his arms in submission, which he did, being a christian man. He was born in Holmes county, O., in 1839. His father James Barton and mother are yet living at an advanced age. He was at one time a minister in the U. B. church, but did not preach a great deal. At the age of 24, he enlisted in Company I, 144th regiment OVI, and served one hundred days. The date of entering the service was May 2, 1864, and was mustered out with his company Aug 31, 1864, at Camp Chase, O. Co. I was in an engagement at Monocacy Junction, where they lost fifty men, killed, wounded and prisoners. The regiment also took part in the service at Washington, Winchester, Snicker's Gap and Harper's Ferry. The funeral services were held last Sunday at the M.E. church, conducted by Rev Jas. Long, assisted by Rev. Baumgardner, and Neibling Post, G.A.R., conducting the burial services at the grave. The remains were buried in Weston cemetery. The Wood County Herald Sunday evening, Dec. 9th 1894, Henry Burdue answered to the last roll call and joined his comrade and neighbor who had just preceded him two days before. On the 14th day of Aug, 1862, at the age of 27 years, he enlisted in Company K, 111th Regiment, OVI, for a period of three years. He was wounded Nov 30, 1864, in the battle of Franklin, tenn, and was mustered out with his company, June 27, 1865, at Salisbury, North Carolina. His regiment was organized at Camp Toledo, and saw some of the hardest fighting in the late war. He participated in twenty-six battles, besides many skirmishes. He was at the seige of Knoxville, Tenn., Resaca, Ga., siege of Atlanta, Ga., Franklin, Tenn., etc. He was born in Erie Co, O., and has been a resident of Weston a great many years. His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. Jas. Long, with burial in Weston cemetery. He received a soldier's burial by his comrades of Neibling Post with full military honors. The families of both soldiers have the sympathy of this community. |
