J. C. Beckes

Funeral service for J.C. Beckes, 87, of Rush Springs, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2001, in the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel with Paul Phipps officiating.
J.C. Beckes was born November 1, 1913, in Cushing, Oklahoma, to P.C. Beckes and Maude (Miller) Beckes, and died Saturday, September 15, 2001, in Rush Springs.
He married Thelma (Farmer) Beckes July 26, 1935, in Chickasha.
J.C. was a heavy equipment operator. He retired in 1977 from Grady County from the 19th Seed Company.
He had been a resident of Rush Springs for 55 years and attended Cushing Schools. He was very creative and built dozens of different types of machines. He enjoyed playing dominoes, loved his family and his daughter and granddaughters-in-law. J.C. had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to joke with people.
He is preceded in death by: his parents and 3 brothers: Luther, Jack and Paul Beckes.
He is survived by his wife: Thelma Beckes of the home; son: Duane Beckes, Venezuela; 2 daughters: Jeanette Phipps and husband Glen of Rush Springs, Linda Wallace and husband Larry of Wanette; 2 sisters: Nettie Icenogle of Rush Springs and Sybil Rhodes of Fresno, CA; 2 brothers: Lonnie Beckes of Springfield, MO, and Wayne Beckes of Yuma, AZ; 8 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Randy Beckes, Brian Phipps, Michael Phipps, Landal Wallace, Kyle Woods and Paul Phipps.
Jim Icenogle will be an honorary pallbearer.
Interment will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel.

 

Connie Sue Tinsley

Funeral services for Connie Sue Tinsley, 59, of Bridgecreek, were held Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Hazel Dell Baptist Church southwest of Minco with Rev. Gary Journeycake officiating. Burial was in the Hazel Dell Cemetery under direction of Huber-Reynolds Funeral Home of Minco.

Mrs. Tinsley died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in Oklahoma City. She was born Feb. 9, 1948, in Union City to Jay and Ruby (Neely) Brothers. She married Sam Tinsley on March 5, 1965, in Union City. She had lived in the Bridgecreek area since 1973. She was retired from Lucent Technologies and was a member of Hazel Dell Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jay and Ruby Brothers, a brother, Rex Brothers, and a sister, Letha Faye Shepherd.

She is survived by her husband, Sam of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Charlotte Tinsley of Minco; brothers, Phillip Jay and Melinda Brothers of Asher and Ricky Eugene and Diane Brothers of Union City; sisters, Melinda Meyers of Minco, Betty J. Mosher of Mustang and Lena Fuller of Moore; and four grandchildren, Jereme Dwayne Tinsley, Kyle James Tinsley, Kendra Michele Tinsley and Sammy Joe Tinsley, all of Minco.

R. C. Bentley

Memorial service for R C Bentley, 64, was held at the Southern Baptist Church in Rush Springs at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 21, with the Rev Elmer Whitehead officiating.
Mr. Bentley was born November 14, 1935, the son of Henry and Jewel Bentley.
He was preceded in death by both his parents; one son, Thomas Walker Bentley; and one grandson, Chance Van Buskirk.
Survivors include three sons, Henry James and his wife Kandy of Chickasha, Ronie Gene of Ninnikah and Raymond Land and his wife Kim of Houma, LA; two daughters, Carol Lester and her husband Jim and Connie Smith and her husband Rodney of Rush Springs, 3 brothers, Dale of Grapevine, TX, Douglas of El Paso TX, and Tom of Dallas, TX; four sisters, Patsy Gay Romon of Fort Worth, TX, Janice Wilson of Rhome, TX, Shiela Gregory of Fort Worth, TX and Rose Van Meter of Arlington TX; 10 grandchildren and on great grandchild.

LOOKING BACK - 25 Years Ago (Dec. 16, 1980)
The Rush Springs (Okla.) community lost a pioneer resident when CICERO EDGAR BERNARD, 100, father of Lt. Gov. Spencer Bernard, died in a Marlow hospital.
Bernard's death came after he had achieved a long-awaited milestone in his life in February - his 100th birthday. He lived in Rush Springs most of his life before he suffered a stroke two weeks earlier. It was the first time in his long life that he experienced major health problems.

CICERO HENRY BERNARD, 87, brother of former Oklahomam Lieutenant Governor Spencer Bernard, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1993, in a Chickasha nursing home.
Service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Rush Springs Church of Christ with Alan Eck officiating. Burial will be in Rush Springs Cemetery, under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home of Rush Springs.
Mr. Bernard was born May 18, 1906, on Rush Creek, east of Rush Springs, Indian Territory. He graduated from Rush Springs High School and Phillips University in Enid and earned his master's degree at Kentucky University in Lexington, Ky. He taught physics at several high schools, colleges and universities, including Texas A&M University at College Station, Texas, where he also taught nuclear physics for 20 years. While at Texas A&M, he wrote a physics lab manual for colleges and universities and it continues to be used today around the country. He also conducted nuclear research at Fort Worth and Oak Ridge, Tenn. At the time of his retirement, he was chairman of the Physics Department at Midwestern University in Wichita Falls. He was a past elder and bible teacher at Churches of Christ in College Station and Wichita Falls.
He moved back to Rush Springs after retirement in 1971 and was a member of the Rush Springs Church of Christ and Lions Club.
He married Maxie R. Travis on Dec. 24, 1927, east of Rush Springs.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a daughter, Dormaloa Cummins and her husband Bill of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Spencer Bernard of Rush Springs; a sister, Brunetta Griffith of Rush Springs; two granddaughters, Cathy Humphrey of Phoenix and Jan Wilson of Lubbock, Texas; and five great-grandchildren.
Bearers will be Bill Bernard, Bernie Bernard, Paul Wilson, Jerry Stewart, Dale Jones and John Paul Griffith.

Vivian Opal Bernard

VIVIAN OPAL BERNARD, 93, of Rush Springs, Okla., passed away Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, in Marlow, Okla.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Church of Christ, Rush Springs, with Cliff Werhan and Larry Brantley officiating. Burial will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery under direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs.

BARBARA JEAN BLACK, 66, of Rush Springs, passed away Wed., Sept. 26, 2007, in Rush Springs.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at the Rush Springs Cemetery, with David Hale officiating. Services are under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs.
Barbara was born Friday, Jan. 10, 1941, in Cardin, Okla., to Clarence Homer and Virginia B. Pliley Fox. She attended school in Oklahoma City. She lived in Oklahoma City before moving to Rush Springs 21 years ago, where she worked as a house cleaner. Barbara married Gary Black in 1962 in California and he preceded her in death in 1999. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, oil painting and ceramics. She also enjoyed working in the yard.
Survivors include her mother, Virginia Miller of Rush Springs; an uncle, Bill E. Pliley of Eufaula; a step-brother, David Miller of Mt. Vernon, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her father; a sister, Mary Sue Fox; a brother, Jimmy Dale Fox; and her step-father, Ross Miller.

Alfred Jackson Blades

Funeral services for Alfred Jackson Blades, 80, of Rush Springs, Okla., will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at the Southern Baptist Church. Rev. Elmer Whitehead will officiate.
Alfred Jackson Blades was born June 5, 1921, in Rush Springs, and died on Sunday, June 17, 2001, in Rush Springs.
Burial will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery, under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel, Rush Springs.

Ileta Ruth Blades

ILETA RUTH BLADES, 85, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel, with John Alexander officiating. Burial will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs, Okla.
Ileta was born Sunday, Sept. 16, 1923, in Rush Springs, to Olie Shackelford and Jessie Harrison. She attended Rush Springs High School. Ileta married T. R. Blades on Jan. 2, 1942, in Rush Springs. He preceded her in death on April 29, 2001.
Ileta enjoyed cooking and sewing. She was a member of the College Heights Baptist Church in Chickasha.
Survivors include two daughters, Tommie Alexander of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Cheryl Harvey and husband Paul of Lubbock, Texas; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Shackelford and wife Faye of Yukon; two sisters, Mary Layton of Austin, Texas, and Ruby Jenks and husband Robert of Edinburgh, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Former Rush Springs resident Larry Gene Blades, 59, of Oklahoma City passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2005, in Oklahoma City.
Funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel, Rush Springs, with the Rev. Elmer Whitehead officiating. Burial will be in Rush Springs Cemetery.
 

T. R. Blades

Funeral service for T. R. Blades, age 82, of Chickasha, Oklahoma, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2001, in the College Heights Baptist Church. Rev. James Swain and Rev. C.A. "Pete" Spradlin will officiate.
T. R. Blades was born on November 21, 1918, the son of Elmer Toledo Blades and Lula Raye O'Rear Blades, in Rush Springs, Oklahoma. He died on Sunday, April 29, 2001, in Chickasha.
T. R. grew up on the family farm northeast of Rush Springs. He graduated from Ninnekah High School in 1936. T. R. joined the United States Army Infantry in 1942 and served during World War II. He married Ileta Ruth Shackelford on January 2, 1942, in Rush Springs. After his discharge from the Army, he moved to Rush Springs.
T. R. lived in Perry, Oklahoma, for seventeen years where he worked for the Long Bell Lumber Company and as an insurance adjuster. He moved to Chickasha in 1970, and worked for General Adjustment Company. He later became an independent insurance adjuster. T. R. was a member of the College Heights Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Floyd and Roy Lee Blades.
Survivors include his wife, Ileta Blades of the home; daughter, Tommie Ruth Alexander of Wichita Falls, Texas; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl Rhea and Jim K. Smith of Lubbock, Texas; brother, Alfred Blades of Rush Springs; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren.
Interment will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery in Rush Springs, Oklahoma.
Service will be under the direction of McRay Funeral Home.

GARRETT A. "DICK" BLAIN, 84, of Rush Springs, Okla., passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, in Oklahoma City.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, with George Ramsey and Rev. David Hale officiating. Burial will be in Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs.
Dick was born Monday, Dec. 3, 1923, in the Agawam area to Festus Blain and Ruth Bess Blain. He was a lifelong resident of Rush Springs. Dick married Sylvia Fay Nicholson on Aug. 24, 1948, in Oklahoma City. She preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 1998. Dick enjoyed playing cards and dominoes at the Rush Springs Senior Citizens Center. He loved hanging out at Hop-n-Sac with his friends, drinking coffee and talking. As a young man Dick was an avid hunter and fisherman. "Junking" was also among his many hobbies.
Survivors include two daughters, Sherrie Webb of Noble, and Judy Klinnert and husband Floyd of Lancaster, Calif.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Blain and wife Janelle, and Joe Blain and wife Mary, all of Rush Springs; two sisters, June Ramsey and husband George of Oklahoma City, and Erlene Holder of Blanchard; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Fay Blain; his parents; one brother, Doug Blain; and one daughter, Janna Hoard.

 

Frederick C. Blakely

Frederick C. Blakely, pioneer Oklahoma druggist and cattleman, died Thursday morning at his home in Britton following a week's illness. He was 86 years old.
A pioneer druggist, state line operator, postmaster, civic leader and one of the first Hereford cattle owners in the state. Blakely came to Oklahoma from Mississippi in 1875 when the state was Oklahoma Territory and settled at Fort Reno. In 1883 he moved to Rush Springs where he lived until 1912 when he came to Oklahoma City. Five years ago he made his home in Britton and has lived there since that time.
As Rush Springs' druggist and one of its principal landowners, Blakely donated the land for the townsite and the Rush Springs cemetery and served as postmaster there for many years. Two hundred acres of land where Oklahoma College for Women is now located at Chickasha was one of his original land holdings in the state
Stage Coach Operator
He owned and operated a stage coach line from Parr near Purcell to Fort Sill and saw his land at Rush Springs divided by the Rock Island railroad when the line was first built through that section of Oklahoma.
Blakely was one of the first owners of Hereford cattle in Oklahoma and participated in the largest cattle drive ever made over the famed Chisholm trail to Kansas City.
Since moving to Oklahoma City he has been connected with the Retailers Fire Insurance Co. for the past 22 years. Last January he and Mrs. Blakely celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. They were married at Tishomingo in 1883 under Indian law by the Dawes Commission, which was the only recognized civil authority in the territory at that time. Members of his family related Thursday that the marriage license for that Indian Ceremony was purchased for $30.
Services Saturday
He was a charter member of the Masonic lodge at Rush Springs, a member of the Eastern Star and of the El Reno Royal Arch Masons. The Siloam Masonic Lodge will hold a service at his funeral.
Services will be at 10 a. m. Saturday in the Britton Methodist Church with Rev O. W. Fontane, officiation. Burial will be in Rush Springs under the direction of the Street and Draper Funeral Home.
Surviving are his wife; five daughters, Mrs. Nellie Parks, Mrs. Laura Gregg, Mrs. Homer Etheridge, all of Oklahoma City; Mrs. E. C. Fryman, Britton; Mrs. John Grady, Wichita, Kan.; two sons, Fred C Blakely Oklahoma City, and Paul M Blakely, Los Angeles Calif; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Isabell Catherine Blakely

Mrs. Isabell Catherine Blakely, 90, pioneer Oklahoma resident, died Monday after a long illness, in the home of a daughter, Mrs. F. C. Fryman, Britton.
Mrs. Blakely came to Oklahoma with her parents during the territory days. They setled in the Rush Springs vicinity. Her husband, the late Frederick C Blakely, donated the townsite at Rush Springs to the city, and the main street there, Blakely Aveneue, is named in his honor.
Mrs. Blakely and her husband, who in early years was a cattleman, came to Oklahoma City about 1912. Blakely in subsequent years was a druggist, real estate dealer and insurance representative. After his death in 1943, Mrs. Blakely made her home with her daughter in Britton.
Mrs. Blakely was past matron of the Order of the Easter Star, and a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors are her daughters, Mrs. Nellie Parks Humbphre, 1037 NE 9; Mrs. I W Gregg, 1201 NE 20; Mrs. John Grady, Wichita Kan.; Mrs. E C Fryman, Britton; Mrs. Homer Etheridge, 11281/2 NE 19th; sons, Fred fo the Milner Hotel; and Paul of Los Angeles CA; and a sister, Mrs. Laura Hannah, Dallas Texas.
Services are incomplete at Street and Draper Funeral Home.
 

Frankie M. Bond

Funeral services for Frankie M. Bond, 74, of Bethany, Okla., will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel, Rush Springs, Okla. Rev. Danny Goddard and Rev. Lee Hillary will officiate.
Frankie M. Bond was born June 8, 1927, in Rush Springs, and died on Friday, March 1, 2002, in Grace Living Center, Bethany.
Burial will be in Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel.
 

 

Opal Blanche "Morris" Bond

 

Former long-time Rush Springs resident Opal Blanche Bond, 84, died Friday, Mar 4 1994, in Tuttle Care Center Tuttle.
Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 7, in the chapel of the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home in Rush Springs with the Rev Hollis Morris officiating. Music was presented by Alan and Joy Bond and Junior and Geraldine Hale. Burial was in Rush Springs Cemetery.
Mrs. Bond was born June 6, 1909 in Colony, the daughter of John Wesley Morris and Hattie Tackett Morris.
She had lived in Tuttle since 1976. She was a retired cafeteria manager for the Jackson Junior High School in Oklahoma City. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Oklahoma City and member of the Agnew Baptist Church in Oklahoma City.
She and Henry H Bond were married in Chickasha on Feb 21, 1925. He died Sept 8, 1975.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Roma Jean Bond. Survivors include three sons, Hayden J Bond of Moore, Bob Bond of Perryton Texas, and Tom Bond of Del City; three daughters, Lavonia Spencer of Rush Springs, Lavada Bond of Tuttle and Mary Carolyn Watson of Moore; 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her son, Tom Bond, and grandsons, Alan Bond, Paul Bond, Michael Watson, Duane Bond and Scott Bond; one sister, Hazel Grissom of Norge.

Josie Hazel Bowles

Rush Springs - JOSIE HAZEL BOWLES, 93, of Rush Springs, died Sunday, January 29, 2006, in Duncan.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs with the Rev. Elmer Whitehead and James McClure officiating. Burial will be in Rush Springs Cemetery.
Bearers will be Johnny McClure, Reggie Long, Ricky Joe McClure, Chris Long, Brian Jacobi, Greg McClure, Jason McClure and Travis Jacobi.

Florene Brown Bozemen

MARLOW — Florene Brown Bozeman, 85, of Marlow died Thursday, April 24, 2003, in Marlow.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Church of Christ in Rush Springs with Clif Werhan officiating. Burial will follow in Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home.
Florene was born on April 30, 1917, in Velma, to John Alfred Brown and Nettie Foster Brown.
She married James Cameron Bozeman on July 20, 1960, in Dillon, S.C. Mrs. Bozeman lived in the Marlow area for 23 years, her hobbies included arts and crafts, gardening, canning, sewing, crochet, piano playing and singing. She took college courses in painting and took flying lessons.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Kaye McClure and husband, Mickey, of Rush Springs, Fern McCoy and husband, Gene, of Duncan, and Betty Freeman and husband, Mitchell, of Sanford, N.C.; a sister, Viola Lorene Rimer of Lawton; a brother, Winston L. Brown of Lawton; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Billy Ray Onstead; a daughter, Sharon Ann Todd; a grandson, Dwayne McClure; an infant grandson; and three infant great-grandsons.

JOHNNY C. BRATCHER, 80, Rush Springs, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2006 in Oklahoma City.
Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at the 1st Assembly of God in Rush Springs, Oklahoma, with Rev. Eugene Howeth officiating. Burial will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery, under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs, Oklahoma.
Johnny was born Friday, January 29, 1926 in Rush Springs, Oklahoma, to the late John Wesley and the late Mary Alice Bratcher. Johnny married the late Delores (Coldiron) Bratcher on April 3, 1948 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Johnny received his bachelor's degree in Science of Agriculture. They lived in Anadarko until moving to Rush Springs in 1983. Johnny enjoyed working on the farm and raising cattle. He also enjoyed taking care of everybody and fixing Sunday dinner. Johnny was a member of the First Assembly of God in Rush Springs.
His survivors include two daughters, Lynda Parsons and husband Wayne of Anadarko, Okla., and Brenda Lepien of Rush Springs; son Danny Douglas Bratcher of Holdenville, Okla.; seven grandchildren, James Flick, Robert Mayo, Danny Bratcher II, Jessica Lepien, Aaron Bratcher, Sarah Lepien and Bradley Bratcher; two great-grandchildren, Cyan Mayo and Alexis Flick; two sisters, Allene Stahl of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mary Long of Rush Springs; and a host of nieces, nephew and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife Delores on Nov. 25, 1997; son, Johnny Michael on Feb. 2, 1989; parents; seven brothers, Dewey, Clarence, Thomas Ray, Albert "Hoot", Herman "Pat", Paul and Raymond; four sisters, Lillie McGuire, Daisy McGuire, Lorena Blay and Goldie Meadows.

LILA RUTH BRATCHER, 79, of Marlow, who died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, in Marlow, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Assembly of God Church in Rush Springs with the Rev. Quenton Newton officiating.
Burial will be in Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home in Rush Springs.
