Ervis Walter Lester


Rush Springs: Ervis Walter Lester, 105, Rush Springs, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, August 13, 2007 in Rush Springs.

Services will be held at 10:30 am, Friday, August 17, 2007, at the Southern Baptist Church in Rush Springs, with David Hale officiating. Burial will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs.

Ervis was born Tuesday, November 12, 1901 in Stamford, Texas, to Benjamin Walter and Edna Zelpha (Chafin) Lester. He lived in Stamford from 1901 to 1912. Ervis graduated from Rush Springs High School in 1921. He then attended OU and USC where he received his associate degree. He married Beatrice Ethel Cobble in Oklahoma City in 1922. He moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1923 where he retired as Deputy Chief of Police on the LA Police Department after 20 years of service. Ervis was the founder of the University of Southern CA Delinquency Control Institute. Ervis was also a marriage counselor for 10 years at the Hollywood Christian Church. He served 16 years as the Adult Authority Vice Chairman and Chairman. In 1971 he served as President of the LA Breakfast Club. He received the Outstanding Civic Service Award in 1972. Ervis returned to Rush Springs that year. On Aug. 2, 2004, he had the pleasure of meeting Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to receive the Deputy Chief of Police Award. He enjoyed fishing, reading, working outside and spending time on the farm. In 2005, he received the State of CA Lifetime Service Award. He also enjoyed going to Lion's Club every Tuesday. Not only did Ervis attended faithfully he also served on several committees with the Lion's Club. This year Ervis received National Recognition for being the oldest member in Oklahoma Lion's Club. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #7, Al Malalaka Shrine in LA and the First United Methodist Church in Rush Springs.

His survivors include, 2 Sons, Robert Lester & wife Joanne of Pasadena, CA, Charles Lester & wife Virginia of Arcadia, CA; 3 Grandchildren, Andrea Moss of Sierra Madre, CA, Cynthia Thompson of San Gabriel, CA, Denise Lester; 4 Great-Grandchildren, Andrew Moss of Sierra Madre, CA, Jeremy Moss of Sierra Madre, CA, Elizabeth Moss of Sierra Madre, CA, Jonathan Moss of Sierra Madre, CA; Several Nieces, Nephews and Great Nieces and Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother and sister.

Pallbearers will be Conn Goodwin, Joe Dorman, Raymond Rust, Don Mileur, Robert Newman, Jimmy Williams, Honorary will be Lion's Club Members, Dale Jones.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lion's Club Boys Ranch.

 

 

ERVIS WALTER LESTER, 105, of Rush Springs, passed away Monday, August 13, 2007, in Rush Springs.

He moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1923, where he retired as Deputy Chief of Police on the LA Police Department after 20 years of service.
Ervis was the founder of the University of Southern California Delinquency Control Institute. Ervis was also a marriage counselor for ten years at the Hollywood Christian Church. He served 16 years as the Adult Authority Vice Chairman and Chairman. In 1971 he served as President of the LA Breakfast Club. He received the Outstanding Civic Service Award in 1972. Ervis returned to Rush Springs that year.

John Allen Leverett

"Funeral Services Held Sunday for J. A. Leverett
Funeral services were held Sunday for J. A. Leverett in the Church of Christ by Gussie Lambert, minister, and Bro. C. A. Spencer. Interment was made in the Rush Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers were C. E. Bernard, A. B. Widdle, E. F. Dawkins, A. F. Atchison, Clabe Sperling and L. V. Morris.
Flower girls were, Mrs. Mildred May, Mrs. Lorena Landrum and Mrs. E. G. Graham.
Mr. Leverett was a pioneer of this community, having lived here for the past 30 years. He had been seriously ill since April 15.
John A. Leverett was born March 7, 1855, near Buckhannon, Georgia, the son of Jessie and Betsy Leverett, and died April 20, 1940, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Baker, at the age of 85 years. In 1868, he moved to Texas with his parents and was married there to Martha Shipp in 1882, who preceeded him in death in 1931. To this union were born three children, Mrs. John Baker, Mrs. Judd Shotts of Rush Springs and John M. Leverett of Oklahoma City, who survive.
Other surviving him are three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two brothers, Will of Bristow and Mart of Rush Springs, one sister, Nanch Oldham of Saint Jo, Texas."

LEVERETT RITES ARE HELD HERE SUNDAY
Funeral service was held at the Church of Christ here Sunday afternoon for MRS. MARTHA LEVERETT, 75, who died Saturday after a long illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jud Shotts, four and one half miles southwest of Rush Springs. The service was conducted by Rev. George Parmer, pastor of the Church of Christ of Apache, and interment was made in the Rush Springs cemetery, with Callaway & Mullican in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Leverett was born in Texas, coming to this section with her husband about fifteen years ago.
Surviving relatives are her husband, John A. Leverett; two daughters, Mrs. Jud Shotts and Mrs. J. H. Baker of Rush
Springs; and a son, John Leverett of Chickasha. 
 

 

 

Blanche Lewis

Rush Springs - Funeral for BLANCHE 'MARDINE' LEWIS, 85, of Rush Springs, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Southern Baptist Church, Rush Springs, with the Rev. Elmer Whitehead officiating. Mrs. Lewis died Saturday, March 24, 2007, in Chickasha. Burial will be in Rush Springs Cemetery under direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home, Rush Springs.
She was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Amity, Ark., to Robert and Maggie Jones Mowery. She graduated from Rush Springs High School. She married Vernon Eugene Lewis on Sept. 6, 1939, in Lawton. He died Dec. 28. 1996. She moved to California where she lived most of her life. In 1944 she moved back to Rush Springs for a year and then she returned to California before moving back to Rush Springs in the 1980's. She was a dietary aide for a California school, and a nurses's aide for the VA Center. She was a loving mother and she always had a smile. She was an involved member of Rush Springs Southern Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Woman Missionary and supported missionaries. She made underclothes for the Baptist Children's Home.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Walter Allen Lewis and wife Sue of Minden, Nev.; two daughters, Patsy "Pat" Jean Hillson of San Francisco, Calif., and Nancy Louise Joyce of Newington, Conn.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Bertha Bryant of Hastings; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, and a brother.
Bearers will be Richey Large, Jimmy Williams, Robert Newman, Conn Goodwin, Kenneth Grooms and J.R Hale.
Honorary bearers are Dale Jones and Bob Graves.

Ethel Gladys Lewis

Graveside services were held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 31, 2007 at the Rush Springs Cemetery in Rush Springs, OK for Ethel Gladys Lewis with Rev. Larry Hatfield officiating.
Ethel was born May 18, 1918 in Rush Springs, OK, the 7th child of Thomas Sanford and Nervie Belle Crow. She was married to James J. "Buster" Lewis on Dec. 27, 1935 in Chickasha, OK. They made their home in California and were blessed with a family of 3 daughters and two sons. Buster preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 1991.
Ethel moved to Ashdown, Arkansas in 1995 where she lived at the time of her death on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at the age of 89 years.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Gary Michael Lewis in 1980; a daughter, Glynda Ruth Vessel, about 1998; and a granddaughter, Rachelle Vessel, in 1964.
Ethel is survived by a son, James Lyndon Lewis of Reedley, CA; two daughters: Nelda F. Davis & Sherri G. Davis, both of Ashdown, AR; one sister, Odell Brown of Bakersfield, CA; 10 Grandchildren: Children of Glynda—Rhonda (Vessel) Burns, Ricky Vessel, Ranell (Vessel) Children of Nelda—Jeffery Long, Jesse Kirkland and Bethel (Kirkland) Brooks.
Children of Sherri—Crystal, Jimmy, John and Christopher.Ethel is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law: Laverne Crow of Chickasha, OK; and many nieces and nephews.

Euzelia Lindsey

EUZELIA "SKEET" JOLLEY LINDSEY, 93, of Duncan, died Saturday, December 23, 2006, in Duncan.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Rush Springs Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. Burial is under direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home.
Skeet was born December 15, 1913, in Acme, to Charles W. and Ella Bailey Jolley. She was a retired school teacher who taught in the Sterling and Rush Springs school systems.
She married Rann Lindsey on Jan. 18, 1936, in Rush Springs. He preceded her in death on April 10, 1963. She was a member of Southern Baptist Church, Rush Springs.
Survivors include her children, Judy White of Duncan, Linda and Roy Lynn Harrelson of Charlotte, N.C., Janie and James Ezell of Tulsa, and Don and Debbie Lindsey of Marlow; a daughter-in-law, Paula Lindsey of Marlow; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Chuck Lindsey; a son-in-law, Mac White; and a granddaughter, Stacy Suzanne Harrelson.

Luster Leroy "Lee" Lindsey was born Sept. 26, 1943, in Rush Springs, and died on Thursday, March 11, 2004, in Norman.

Reginald Dale Long

Rush Springs - REGINALD DALE "REGGIE" LONG, 51, of Rush Springs, passed away Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, in Oklahoma City.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Assembly of God in Rush Springs with the Rev. Quinton Newton, the Rev. Elmer Whitehead and Justin Harris officiating. Burial will be in Rush Springs Cemetery under direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs.
Reggie was born April 3, 1955, in Chickasha, to Marcelles Long and Mary Bratcher Long. He graduated from Rush Springs High School and attended Cameron University. He lived in Rush Springs all of his life. Reggie was a self-employed carpet layer for 30 years.
He loved sports, playing pool, talking to people, and he never met a stranger. He loved playing with his grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Reggie Long, and Chris Long and wife Laura, all of Rush Springs; five grandchildren, Skyler Long, Caitlyn Long, Ethan Long, Emily Long and Ensly Long; his mother, Mary Long of Rush Springs; a sister, Marca Johnson and husband William of Rush Springs; a nephew, Joshua Johnson and wife Ashley of Rush Springs; and Amy Long of Marlow.
He was preceded in death by his father and a granddaughter, Bailey Cheyenne Long.
Bearers will be David Meadows, Dub Meadows, Hershal Claborn, Leroy Long, Greg Wortham, Randy David and Josh Johnson.

Fronia Delilah Lowry

Former long-time Rush Springs resident Fronia Delilah Lowry, 96, of Tyler, Texas died Saturday, May 4, 2002 in Tyler.
Funeral services were held at 10am Wednesday, May 8, 2002 in the Southern Baptist Church of Rush Springs with the Rev Elmer Whitehead officating. Burial was in the Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lowry was born Sept 28, 1905 in Pea Ridge OK, the daughter of Ransom Mosley and Ozella (Todd) Mosley.
She was married to Samuel Neal "Buster" Lowry on 11 Dec 1927 in Rush Springs. He died 4 Dec 1989.
She had been a resident of the Rush Springs area all of her life and attended Bailey and Marlow schools. She had been a member of the Rush Springs Bon Temps Literary Club and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Souther Baptist Church of Rush Springs.
Survivors include a daugther, Patsy Payne and husband Dr Donald Payne of Tyler, TX, 3 grandchildren, Keith Payne of Shreveport LA, Marke Payne of Winston-Salem NC, and Alan Payne of Denver CO and six great grandchildren.
 
 
 

 

Calvin Dale Loyd

Rush Springs: Calvin Dale Loyd, 48, Rush Springs, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2009 in Lawton.

Services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, February 21, 2009, at the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel, with David Hale officiating. Burial will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery, under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs, Oklahoma.

Calvin was born Wednesday, May 11, 1960 in Shamrock, Texas, to Less Loyd and Ruby May Pelley. Calvin lived in the Rush Springs area all of his life. He graduated from Rush Springs High School. He married Eva Nicole Laughin in Rush Springs in 2000. Calvin was dedicated to his work in the oilfield as a roughneck for over 30 years. He enjoyed fishing, tinkering on things and working on his lawnmower. He loved spending time and playing with his children. He was a member of the Vimy Ridge Baptist Church.

Rubie was born Thursday, June 9, 1921, in Boswell, Okla., to John William and Ora Frances Trusty Pelley. She attended school at Boswell. Rubie married Robert L. Loyd on Nov. 4, 1936. She moved to Rush Springs in 1964 from Shamrock, Texas. She enjoyed flowers and tomatoes. She loved to take care of her kids, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. Rubie attended Assembly of God Church in Rush Springs.
Survivors include seven sons, Victor Loyd and wife Kathy of Amarillo, Texas, Ernest Dean Loyd and wife Selma, Roy Lee Loyd and wife Lynn, and Robert Loyd Jr., all of Rush Springs, Jeary Don Loyd and wife Jeannie of Duncan, Darrell Wayne Loyd and wife Brondie of Weatherford, and Calvin Dale Loyd and wife Nikki of Marlow; four daughters, Wanda McLendon and husband Grayson of Fort Worth, Texas, Lillian Terry and husband Eddie of Amarillo, Patricia Weyrick and husband Bill, and Mary Frances Foster and husband Tommy, all of Rush Springs; 27 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three sons, Marvin, Ervin, and Michael; five grandsons, William, Jermey, Timmy, Little Bill, and Robert; her parents; a sister, Lucille Norton; and three brothers, Robert Pelley, Ray Pelley and Johnny Pelley.

MARGARET MARIE HAYES LYONS, 76, Rush Springs, Okla., passed away Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, in Chickasha, Okla.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs, Okla.
Margaret was born Sunday, May 22, 1932, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Arthur Kenneth Bivens and Helen Mae Trout Bivens. Margaret had lived in the Marlow and Rush Springs area since the early 1970's. She was a homemaker who loved to cook and sew. Margaret liked singing karaoke and writing poetry. She enjoyed fishing, making jewelry and working with wood.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Lyons of the home; a son, Michael R. Hayes and wife Kelley of Lawton; five grandchildren, John Hayes, Charles Hayes, Casandra Hayes, Jennifer Jordan and Zach Jordan; and a brother, George Arthur Bivens.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Donna Ballard.

 

 

Elda Amelia Manis

Elda Amelia Manis was born August 11, 1913, to Emil R. and Lillian M. Schiemann in Rush Springs, Oklahoma. Elda died November 21, 2003.
Following graduation from Rush Springs High School she attended Oklahoma College for Women where she graduated with a degree in music. She was married to R.V. Manis, Jr. from 1934 to 1945. During World War II she was employed as a Storekeeper with the Army Air Force at Goodfellow Field in San Angelo, Texas. Following the war she moved to Oklahoma City and was employed by Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company where she worked for more than 30 years prior to her retirement in 1978. She was a long time member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and active in the Chappell Sunday School Class. Other memberships included Women's Committee of the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra, National Secretaries' Association (now International Association of Administrative Professionals), and Civic Music Association.
Following her retirement, she continued to participate and enjoy the activities of both the OG&E Pioneer Club and the OG&E Trailblazers. She is survived by several cousins and many loving and devoted friends. Services will be held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church at 10:00 am., Wednesday, November 26, 2003. A graveside service will be held that same day at 1:30 p.m. at Rush Springs Cemetery, Rush Springs, Oklahoma. Elda's family and friends are most grateful for the wonderful, loving care she received from the compassionate caregivers in the Susanna Wesley nursing unit at Epworth Villa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Epworth Villa, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for Parkinson's research, or Mission Hospice.

 

 

Eldon Lawrence Manning

Cyril - Funeral for ELDON LAWRENCE MANNING, 80, Cyril, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Hodge Funeral Home in Fletcher with the Rev. Rick Forthman officiating.
Mr. Manning died Monday, July 11, 2005.
Burial will be at Rush Springs Cemetery.
He was born Feb. 4, 1925, in Oklahoma, and was raised here. He retired from Oklahoma Refinery in Cyril after 39 years. He later moved to Texas to be with his family.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Don Manning, Weatherford, Texas; three stepchildren: Joyce Turney, Betty Ogle, Weatherford, Texas; and Joe Turney, Calfornia; seven grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Ramona and Bennie Lemons, Irving, Texas; and Evelyn Bender, Knoxville, Tenn.; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Earl and Alice Manning, Alex; and Pete and Lottie Manning, Cyril; and many nieces and nephews.

 

 

Bobbye Lea Martin

Bobbye was born to the late Joseph and Jewel (Archer) Lewis. Bobbye lived in Rush Springs most of her life except the last five years, when she lived in Broken Arrow near her son. She married Robert E. Martin in 1937 in Chickasha. He preceded her in death in 1977. Bobbye worked as a nurse's aide at the Talley -Walker Hospital in Marlow. She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Rush Springs.

Survivors include her son, Jerry Martin and wife Roselie of Broken Arrow; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a daughter, Gwen Knutz.

Graveside services were held Sept. 29, in Rush Springs Cemetery, with the Rev. Elmer Whitehead officiating. Services were under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs.

 

 

Judy Elaine May

Funeral services for Judy Elaine May, 53, of Rush Springs, Okla., will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Marlow, Okla.
Judy Elaine May was born Sept. 19, 1949, in Marlow, and died on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at her home in Rush Springs.
Burial will be in Rush Springs Cemetery, Rush Springs, under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home of Marlow.

 

 

Norma Lavoise May

Graveside service for Norma Lavoise May, 81, of Marlow, who died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Rush Springs Cemetery with Roger Crice officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home of Marlow.

Funeral Services will be today
For Mrs. Gladys Mayo

Funeral Services will be held at 2p.m. today, Thursday, Feb.21, in the chapel of Brown's Funeral home in Chickasha for Mrs. Gladys Jones Mayo, 66. Burial will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery.

Mrs. Mayo was born in Rush Springs and lived here until 1937 when the family moved to Chickasha. She died at 9 p.m. Monday at the home of her daughter in Jackson, Mississippi. Her home was in Oklahoma City where she had resided for 35 years but she was visiting in Mississippi at the time of her death.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Blair, Jackson MS; father, Walter C. Jones of Chickasha; one brother, Jimmy Jones of Chickasha; four sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Grimes of Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. Opal Robertson of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Ruby Bozeman of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Mrs. Eddie Davidson of Cleveland Ohio, and two grandchildren.
