Seven Killed in Fire
By Ron Jackson and Chad Previch
CHICKASHA - Seven people, including five children, died Thursday morning in one of the deadliest house fires in
Oklahoma's history. Neighbors frantically tried to douse the predawn blaze at 1801 S Sixth St. before firefighters
arrived. Inside the home, investigators found evidence of a faulty refrigerator and that some victims perished
while trying to escape. Investigators said the home's smoke detector wasn't working.
Killed were: Cindy McCurley, 34; Thomas Raby, 32; Ciscili McCurley, 12; Casey McCurley, 9;
Cassandra McCurley, 8; Chelsea McCurley, 7; Sidney Raby, 1. Sidney was the only child born to both parents. The
others had a different biological mother or father. A sixth child - Christopher McCurley, 4 - was at his grandmother's
house in Rush Springs at the time of the fire.
Mike McCurley, father to Ciscili, was surrounded by friends and family at his home several
miles from the fire. Ciscili, who was looking forward to the seventh grade, was baptized Sunday. "She was
a wonderful child of God," her father said. "Just to know she's walking the streets of gold with God
is important to me. She accepted Christ as her Savior."
Authorities suspect the fan motor on the family's refrigerator overheated, sparking a fire
that quickly spread to the attic and consumed the structure. Firefighters arriving two minutes after the initial
emergency call found the 66-year-old rental house engulfed in flames. Assistant City Manager Mike Brice called
the fire the deadliest in Chickasha's history. He thought the severe heat likely overworked the refrigerator.
Six of the seven victims were pulled from the house without a pulse, Brice said. They were
taken to nearby Grady County Memorial Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. A seventh victim later was discovered
amid the charred and gutted home. "It does appear that some of them were trying to get out," Brice said.
"They became overwhelmed with smoke before they could get out of the house."
Mike McCurley, Ciscili's father, drove to the scene about 7 a.m., two hours after firefighters
arrived. He stood in disbelief. Tears welled in his eyes as he looked at the ground and held a school picture,
his daughter's blue eyes and smiling face emanating from the image. "She was a real sweet girl," said
Kristy Davis, Ciscili's pastor. "She could have come to live with her father, but instead, she chose to stay
with her mother so she could help take care of her sisters and brothers." A loud boom awakened neighbor Cheyenne
Robinson shortly before 5 a.m. "I ran outside and from my front porch I could see the flames rolling up under
their porch," said Robinson, 32. "I ran around to the back of the house, and broke out a couple of windows.
I yanked an air conditioner from one window and a bunch of black smoke followed out the window. I screamed, but
I heard no one. "I knew no one was going to get into that house." Robinson soon turned his attention
to Evelyn Largent, a next-door neighbor. Largent, 81, uses a walker. Robinson kicked in her front door and escorted
her to safety. "I thought the whole neighborhood was going to burn down," Robinson said. Cindy McCurley
often cared for Largent, who referred to Cindy's children as "my grandchildren." "I wasn't blood
kin, but they were my grandchildren just the same," said Largent, still dressed in a nightgown. "Those
kids practically lived at my house. I was teaching one girl how to sew, and another was learning to draw. "I
told Cindy several times to get out of that house because the wiring was bad. She was even looking for a new place."
Another neighbor, Randy Mongold, was awakened by his brother yelling about the fire. His brother called 911, and
Mongold grabbed his garden hose in an attempt to extinguish the fire. The hose wouldn't reach. "Unfortunately,
I was worthless," he said.
Mongold said the family members were good neighbors. Thomas Raby drove a truck for a lumberyard,
and Cindy McCurley worked for a Lawton health care company. William Bradford, who lives next door, said he had
known Thomas Raby since junior high, and his children often played with the McCurley and Raby children. "They
were good people," said Bradford, who noted that Thomas Raby and Cindy McCurley recently celebrated the second
anniversary of their relationship. Bradford spent Wednesday night "hanging out" with Thomas Raby, he
said. Bradford hung his head as he stood in his doorway, occasionally lifting his eyes to look at the charred remains
of his neighbors' home. He fought back tears. "That house has always had bad electrical problems, real bad
power surges," Bradford said. "It was an old house."
The owner of the house could not be reached Thursday. Beverly Henley, principal at Lincoln
Elementary, described the children as model students who were intelligent and compassionate toward others. "They
were just exceptional children," she said. "They were very strong academically. Model students. We were
just totally blessed to have had the opportunity to have them in our schools." Casey was entering the fourth
grade; Cassandra third grade; and Chelsea second grade, Henley said. The children always were smiling, and their
actions showed that their parents raised them well, she said. "They were just precious," Henley said.
