Welcome to Oklahoma Genealogy Trails!

Located in northwestern Oklahoma, Major County was established from the southern part of the territorial Woods County at 1907 statehood. Bounded by Woods and Alfalfa counties on the north, Garfield County on the east, Kingfisher, Blaine and Dewey on the south, and Woodward on the west, Major County has 957.87 square miles of land and water. It is drained by the North Canadian and Cimarron rivers and the Eagle Chief, Griever, and Sand creeks. Major County was part of the Cherokee Outlet and opened to non-Indian settlers on September 16, 1893.  The county was named for John Charles Major, county resident and representative to the state's 1906 Constitutional Convention. Although the 1893 land opening attracted settlers from many states and foreign countries, the largest concentration to settle in present Major County came from Kansas.

County commissioners rented office space until 1908-1909, when a two-story, brick courthouse was constructed. A larger, stone courthouse was erected in 1928 at a cost of $77,495. In 1984 the Major County courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NR 84003153).

Volunteers Dedicated to Free Genealogy

Our goal is to help you track your ancestors through time by transcribing genealogical and historical data and placing it online for the free use of all researchers. This is a continuation of our original Illinois Trails History and Genealogy Project and we are excited about this opportunity to expand into other states. We welcome your feedback and comments, and of course, your data contributions. If you have transcribed data that you would like to have posted on this website, please send it to usIf you would like to be kept informed of our state and county website updates, subscribe to our mailing lists
