Oklahoma Transcribed Census Data
The first census for parts of present-day
Oklahoma took place in 1860. Only residents
of towns near missions, government
agencies and military posts were
enumerated,
but it also
includes a
partial
slave
schedule for the
Indian lands. Yes, the Nat.
Americans kept
slaves.
You'll
find those
enumerations
filed with Arkansas
records since
Oklahoma was not a
state
yet.
Oklahoma's
1870 and 1880 enumerations are
apparently
"missing"...
The 1890
enumeration was
destroyed in a fire
along with
the rest of the country's, though a
special
census for
seven counties
in central OK and Panhandle survive.
Various
special censuses survive,
1880/1890
Cherokee;
1885, 1896, 1900
Choctaw
censuses and a 1900
Chickasaw census.
Some
of these enumerations include
everyone
in the
area, so
it's helpful
to check them out
whether you have Nat.
Amer. roots
or not.
