Miscellaneous newspaper records for Columbia County

Major J.S. Rinearson, who was in command of Fort Boise as long ago as 1865, and since he left the service, has been residing in Columbia county Oregon, is now paying our city a visit. He says he never believed we would have such a flourishing and delightful city, and is almost sorry that he did not make a permanent location here. The Major is looking well, and holds his age with remarkable tenacity. In speaking on politics, he says he looks upon the silver in question as we do, and it is strange that neither party dare make it a leading issue by declaring in favor of silver as a legal tender for any amount. He thinks Tilden is a wily politician,  too cunning to be trusted; while he knows Hayes to be a man of irreproachable character, capable and honest, whom nothing can be said against. The only argument against him is that he may be led by others, but he don't think that will be the case. The Democrats have no issue of a leading  character, and their chances look dark to him.
