Location of Southport Mine and School

Very little is known about the Southport School or Davis Slough school. A chance mention,
reprinted in the Coos Bay News many years later led to this brief mention: 1875: The Southport Mine on Isthmus Slough opened. It proved to be one of the most successful mines of the region, producing coal through World War II. Source: Coos Historical and Maritime Museum ...the Southport mine, opened in 1875, being the only successful rival to the Newport and Eastport [mines].
