SOCIALIST LEADER LOSES HIS LIFE
Frank T. Johns, Former Candidate For President, Perishes In Attempt To Save Drowning Boy.
Bend, Oregon, May 21-Frank T. Johns, of Portland, Ore., socialist labor candidate for president in 1924, was drowned here yesterday in a vain attempt to save a boy from a similar fate.
The youth, Jack Rhodes, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Rhodes, of Bend, was fishing from a bridge over the Deschutes river when he lost his balance and fell into the swift stream. Johns, who was on his way to a political meeting in a park along the river, saw the boy being swept downstream and plunged in after him.
Johns reached the boy 25 yards from shore and managed to tow him to within ten feet of the bank. There the rescuer became exhausted. He made a desperate attempt to push the boy ashore and in the effort both went down.
It was said that Johns was to have been a candidate for the presidency again this year on the socialist-labor ticket. He had lived in Portland about nine years and was a member of the carpenters union there. He had been active in politics for several years.

Mr. and Mrs. Don C. Hall, Well Known Here, Die In Crash
Details of the tragic death of Mr. and Mrs. Don C. Hall, former residents of Stevens Point, who met death when their automobile crushed over an embankment in the mountains near Bend Oregon, July 18, have been received here. Mr. Hall drove his car too near the edge of the road over the high cliff and the road gave way allowing the car to tumble 1000 feet below and the bodies rolled nearly as far, badly crushing them and causing death immediately.
A son of Mr. and Mrs. Hall of Stevens Point went west arrange for their burial. Mr. Hall was well known in Wisconsin Rapids as he was formerly assemblyman from Portage county.  He was a man of distinguished appearance and wore long hair. The older residents of the city will remember him well.
