Beats Police Assistant to Death
Bend, Ore., June 22 - Delmont Lawrence, 52, a police
assistant here, was beaten to death in the Deschutes
county jail during the night, and Mancet Wilburn
Bower of Los Angeles was critically wounded by the
same assailant. A man booked as Ralph Kenneth Jubb
of Portland, arrested earlier on a drunkenness
charge, was held for questioning about the attack.
Police Chief Everett Rambo said Lawrence, a former
jockey and once well known in Pacific coast racing,
was killed with a heavy club. Bower, a carnival
worker, was in a critical condition from throat
slashes. District Attorney Bert C. Boylan said Jubb
apparently struck Lawrence repeatedly for 10 minutes
and then turned on Bower. Police said Jubb asserted
he had no recollection of the assault.
