Johns,

SOCIALIST
LEADER LOSES HIS LIFE
Frank T.
Johns, Former Candidate For President, Perishes
In Attempt To Save Drowning Boy.
Bend, Oregon, May 21 - Frank T. Johns, of
Portland, Ore., socialist labor candidate for
president in 1924, was drowned here yesterday in a
vain attempt to save a boy from a similar fate.
The youth, Jack Rhodes, 12-year-old son of Mr. and
Mrs. J.C. Rhodes, of Bend, was fishing from a
bridge over the Deschutes river when he lost his
balance and fell into the swift stream. Johns, who
was on his way to a political meeting in a park
along the river, saw the boy being swept
downstream and plunged in after him.
Johns reached the boy 25 yards from shore and
managed to tow him to within ten feet of the bank.
There the rescuer became exhausted. He made a
desperate attempt to push the boy ashore and in
the effort both went down.
It was said that Johns was to have been a
candidate for the presidency again this year on
the socialist-labor ticket. He had lived in
Portland about nine years and was a member of the
carpenters union there. He had been active in
politics for several years.

Donkel,
Ida
Sudden Death of Mrs. Donkel
Ida M., wife of S. P. Donkel, died suddenly about
2 o'clock Tuesday morning. Her heart was
weak and a regurgitation from the stomach while
she was asleep filled the trachea and caused
suffocation. Mr. Donkel was awakened by a
sound like snoring. He at once perceived
that something was wrong with his wife and tried
to rouse her. This attempt was unsuccessful
and he hastened to light a lamp, but all was over
in a few minutes and the patient, who had
apparently not wakened at all, slept the sleep of
death. Dr. Ed- was hastily summoned, but
there was no use for his services.
Mrs. Donkel was born in Ohio 54 years ago and
there she married Mr. Donkel. They moved
westward to DeMoines, Iowa, where they resided a
number of years, and 18 years ago came west to
Oregon. Until about three years ago they
lived in the Nehalem valley, in Columbia
county. Then they came to Crook
county. They lived in various parts of this
county, coming to Bend from Lava within the past
year. Mr. Donkel and five children survive
the wife and mother. The eldest child is
Isaac, who, with the youngest three – Iva,
Cleveland and Elizabeth – made his home with the
family just north of Bend. The second son,
Wallace, lives with his family at Lava.
The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon from
the schoolhouse, the Rev. O. W. Triplett, of
Prineville, officiating. Interment was in
the Bend cemetery, this being the first grave
there.
Mr. Donkel and the children express the warmest
gratitude for the services and ministrations of
neighbors and friends in the time of their
bereavement.
