Death of Alonzo Gates.
Alonzo
Gates, an old resident of East Portland and a pioneer of '47, died
at his farm at Lent's Thursday night at 10 o'clock, with a
complication of liver and heart disease.
A short time ago Mr. Gates and family moved from their
residence in Tibbitts' addition out on his place at Lent's, on
Johnson creek. Ten days ago he was taken sick and continued to grow
worse until death came to his relief. Mr. Gates was 63 years of age.
He leaves a wife and five children. He has seen East Portland grow
from a few houses into a city, and also the land he invested in
become very valuable, so he died quite well off. Mr. Gates was a man
on integrity and a good neighbor. While of decided opinions, he was
courteous and agreeable. The news of his death will be received with
deep regret by his friends in East Portland and elsewhere. It is
expected that his funeral will take place Sunday from East Portland
and the remains will be buried in Multnomah cemetery.
