Joseph Lane

December 14, 1804 in Buncombe County, North Carolina and died April 19, 1881 in Roseburg, Oregon. In 1820 he married Polly Pierre in Warrick County, Ind. Polly was born March 16, 1802 and died August 16, 1870. Joseph and Polly are buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon. Joseph was an American General in the Mexican War. He was appointed to be the first governor of the Oregon Territory from 1848-1850 by President James Polk and was superintendent of Indian affairs in Oregon. He was the vice presidential nominee of the southern wing of the Democratic Party in 1860. He was elected to several terms in the State house of representatives in 1822 and in 1844-1846 and was elected as a Democrat in the U.S. Senate from 1859-1861. Lafayette son of Joseph and Polly Lane would also become involved in State house of representatives and the Democrat Party. Later his grandson Dr. Harry Lane would become an Oregon State Senator in 1912.
