Willamina Pioneer Cemetery, Willamina, Polk Co., Oregon

Thanks to Dianne Harsh for sharing the burials and other information below with us!!

Willamina Pioneer Cemetery was originally owned by the Joseph W. Knifong family.  Joseph, his wife Mary and 9 of their children are buried in the cemetery – None of the  children buried in the cemetery reached adulthood.  In 1901 the cemetery was purchased by the City of Willamina for a sum of $1.  The cemetery recently (since 1996) received Pioneer Status.

Willamina sits on the Polk Yamhill County Lines.  The cemetery is in Polk County, however, a small corner of it may actually be in Yamhill County.  Most of the death certificates issued for people buried in the cemetery were issued by Yamhill County as Willamina contracts with Yamhill County for services.  The major part of the City of Willamina is in Yamhill County.

Lot number 1 is in the northwest corner of the cemetery and you read the lot numbers from north to south.

Directions:

From Salem, travel west on HWY22 approximately 26 miles to the junction of HWY18B.  Turn right on 18B and go 2 miles into Willamina.  You will pass the City Limits sign on a long slow curve when entering the town.  About ¼ mile past the city limits sign, you will see a traffic island on the left side of the road with a sign that says “Entering Yamhill County”.  Turn at the island and then make a sharp left turn onto Branson Street which is a narrow gravel street.  The cemetery is at the end of the street.

From Portland:  Take Highway 99W south approximately 35 miles to the Junction of Highway 18.  Turn left onto Highway 18 and follow it approximately 23 miles west towards Lincoln City.  When you reach the exit for Hwy 18 Business Loop outside of Sheridan, take the business loop.  Drive through Sheridan and another 4 miles to Willamina.  Go through the town of Willamina following the road when it junctions to the south – (Across the rail road tracks and bridge).  Keep traveling on S Main Street till you see the traffic island on the right with the Sign that says “Entering Polk County”.  Turn on the right side of the Island and go straight ahead onto Branson Street.  The cemetery is at the end of the street.

Myrtle Barber is the Cemetery Caretaker and asks that her phone number not be disclosed.  Anyone who needs more information can contact the City or the Willamina Public Library and leave a message for callback.

Willamina is located approximately 30 miles East of Lincoln City, 28 Miles NE of Salem and approximately 60 Miles SW of Portland.

*Note from Dianne - The records are older - I cant remember when I did this - it was after the cemetery reached pioneer status but probably around 2003 or 2004 - so there is nothing for anyone buried since then
