Frank Hettick, well known in Tillamook County as a proud veteran and steward of the American flag, died April 28 at his home in Tillamook. He was 87.
Funeral services for Hettick were held May 2, at Waud's Funeral Home in Tillamook, with interment at the Tillamook IOOF Cemetery.
Hettick, Grand Marshall of the 1987 June Dairy Parade, was a veteran of World War I and was active in many veteran-oriented and patriotic capacities.
For more than 50 years, he helped place American flags in the graves of Tillamook County service men. In addition, Hettick presented large flags to schools, civic and youth groups in memory of service personnel. He especially enjoyed sharing his love of Americanism and the flag with youngsters. "Young people need to know and remember that our flag is a national treasure." he said recently. "I love my flag and I want the kids to love it too." Hettick served in the United States Army (31st Infantry Company F) for three years during World War I. He served with the Expeditionary Forces in Siberia and in the Philippines. During his army service, Hettick was selected to honor several famous American military officers. He served as honor guard for Ge. Leonard Wood and hosted Adms.Richard Byrd and Harold Stark, all in Manila. He was a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2848, and was a charter member and past commander of World War I Barracks No. 982. In addition, Hettick was past commander of World War I barracks District 1, and served as national deputy chief chairman on Americanism and National deputy chief of staff for WWI veterans organization. After the war, Hettick came to Tillamook County and helped build the Roosevelt Highway (now U.S. 101) in South County. He later worked for 28 years for the Tillamook County Creamery Association was superintendent of the Fairview Water District for 12 years and worked for the Tillamook Water Commission as well. Later, Hettick served on the city Water Commission. Herrick was a member of Tillamook Elks Lodge 1437 for 50 years, and was named Elk of the year for 1975-76. This year he was Oregon's Northwest District nominee for state Elk of The Year. He was born April 20, 1901 in Larkins (Larkinburg), Kan. to James and Ida Mae Hettick. The family moved to Salem when he was a small child. Hetick attended school in Salem and completed his schooling in the Philippines. He is survived by his wife, Pearle , and daughter Mary Dean, both of Tillamook; a son, Frank, Jr.' West Linn; a brother, Lester, Eugene; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

PEARLE S. HETTICK
Memorial services for Pearle S. Hettick will be held Wednesday, May at 1 p.m. in the First Christian Church, 2203 Fourth Street, Tillamook. Mrs. Hettick died Friday, April 29, in Tillamook. She was born in Corvallis on Dec. 10, 1908 to George and Effie Lincoln White. She attended school in Antioch and Stockton, Calf. and in Tillamook. In October 21928 she was united in marriage to Frank Hettick, Sr. Mrs. Hettick was a past president of VFW Auxiliary, past president of World War I Auxiliary, past secretary of that organization, and a member of the First Cristian Church. She volunteered in many activities to benefit the Veterans Hospital, making quilts and art projects, she and her late husband Frank Hettick, Sr, served as Grand Marshall's for the 1987 June Dairy Parade. Mrs. Hettick is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Shirley Hettick of West Linn, one daughter and son-in-law Mary and Richard Dean of Tillamook; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister Leona Grunder of Tillamook; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, by just one year and a day. Following the memorial service, a short graveside service will be held at the IOOF Cemetery, with Waud's funeral in care of the service. NAME:  Lewis Samuel Hushbeck, Sr.

Died. Mr. Hushbeck, who has been teaming between this place and Woods, succumbed last Friday to heart failure. He had been in this city and returned with a load of merchandise to Woods for Mr. Robedee’s store and upon reaching his destination, complained of being ill. He laid down on a cot in the rear of Mr. Robedee’s store where he breathed his last a few minutes later. Deceased leaves a wife and several children.

   Mrs. Hushbeck Dies After Long Illness                
 Funeral services conducted by the local chapter of Eastern Star were held Tuesday morning for Mrs. Sarah Hushbeck who died Sunday morning at the age of 68 years and following a lingering illness. Mrs. Hushbeck, who was born in Jackson County, Iowa, February 8, 1858, has been a resident of Tillamook County since 1892 and of Tillamook city since 1913. In 1860 she came to California with her parents and to Oregon in 1875. Her marriage to Mr. Hushbeck was September 14, 1879. She had been affiliated with the Baptist Church since childhood, and at the time of her death was a member of the Eastern Star and Rebekah lodges, and Woman’s Relief Corps. She is survived by four sons, L. S. and Clarence A. Hushbeck of Tillamook, Thomas A. Hushbeck of Buffalo, Wyoming, and V. R. Hushbeck of Cloverdale; and two daughters, Mary A. Thun of Cloverdale and Florence E. Norton of Oregon City. Three brothers and a sister also survive. Her husband died in 1902. The services were held at the Henkle Chapel. Burial was at the Kennedy Cemetery at Cloverdale. Rev. W. J. Morrow of the Methodist Church of Tillamook preached the funeral sermon.

Lewis Samuel Hushbeck passed away at the Bennett Nursing Home on May 14, 1953 at the age of 72 years nine months and 11 days. He was born on August 2, 1880 at Watsonville, California. He came with his parents to Oregon in 1892 where they lived on a farm overlooking the Nestucca River. He was united in marriage to Eva Belle Burroughs at Portland, Oregon, on October 22, 1908. He became a member of the Cloverdale Baptist Church in 1899. Mr. and Mrs. Hushbeck came to East Beaver in 1909 where he was assistant cheesemaker. In 1912, they moved to Tillamook and for the past 14 years have resided on their home up the Wilson River. He was a member of the Pioneer Association, a 45-year Jewel member of Tillamook Lodge No. 94 IOOF, a member of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge No. 52, a charter member of Beaver Rebekah Lodge. He is survived by his wife Eva and one brother, Ray Hushbeck, and hosts of friends. Services were conducted on Monday, May 18, at 2 PM in the Lundberg and Son Memorial with Rev. J. C. Stevens of the Baptist Church officiating. Mrs. Wendell Werner was the soloist and Mrs. D. H. Near accompanist. Graveside services under the auspices of the IOOF Lodge were conducted. Lester Donaldson acted as Noble Grand and A. E. Hagglund as chaplain. Bearers were George Hoskins, Verner Holden, Bud Cawley, J. M. Wilson, Lee Doty, and Frank Freeman. There were many beautiful flowers, and the attendance testified to the high regard in which he was held.

Mrs. Mary Augusta Thun, resident of Tillamook County for many, many years, passed away at the age of 70 years nine months and 29 days at the Tillamook County General Hospital. Mrs. Thun was born on June 8, 1882 at Watsonville, California. She was united in marriage to Fred Paul Thun at Cloverdale on September 19, 1906. Mr. and Mrs. Thun have resided in Tillamook city for the past ten years but in the county for many years. She was a member of the Nazarene Church and had many friends among its members and in the community.Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Alice Blankenship of Willamina; four sons, Paul of Cottage Grove, Floyd of Santa Monica, Calif., Clark of Cloverdale, and Lee Thun of Tillamook; two brothers, Lewis Sam Hushbeck of Tillamook and Ray Hushbeck of Cloverdale; and 15 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 10 at 2:00 PM in the Tillamook Church of the Nazarene, Rev. Roscoe Pershall officiating. Mrs. Marvin Anderson, accompanied by Mrs. Thomas Spivey, will sing “A Perfect Day” and “Shadows.” Bearers will be Lucius Brode, Fred Reusser, Victor Learned, Sr., Clark Thun, Sr., Alwin Blum, Myron Blanchard. Interment will be made in the Tillamook IOOF Cemetery with Lundberg and Son arranging the service.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon, March 10, for Fred Paul Thun, 81, retired dairy farmer. Mr. Thun was a resident of Ontario, Calif., at the time of his death, having moved there from Tillamook two years ago. Rev. Lester Braddock officiated at services at Tillamook Nazarene Church. Mrs. Paul Zuercher was organist, and soloists were Mrs. Harold Schield and Mrs. Hubert Kinnaman. Interment was made in Tillamook IOOF Cemetery. Pallbearers were Myron Blanchard, Jay Honey, Herman Oldenkamp, Melvin Kneeland, Rev. L. O. Weber, and Victor Learned. Mr. Thun was born Dec. 1, 1880, in Stillwater, Minn. On Sept. 19, 1906, he married Mary Augusta Hushbeck at Cloverdale. She passed away April 7, 1953. On Feb. 28, 1960, he married Olive Phelps at Ontario, Calif., who survives. Besides the widow, survivors include four sons – Paul of Eugene; Clark of Cloverdale, Lee of Tillamook, and Floyd of Santa Monica, Calif.; a brother, Henry of Fresno, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Hackel of Carnation, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Lundberg & Sons, Funeral Directors, had charge of arrangements.

Lee F. Thun, the son of Fred Thun and Mary Hushbeck-Thun, was born Nov. 26, 1915 in Woods. He died July 16 in Tillamook at the age of 78. Mr. Thun graduated from Nestucca High School in 1935 and worked as a gypo logger and as a self-employed carpenter. Later, he worked as a milk hauler throughout Tillamook County until the late 1970s when he retired. After retirement, he continued to work in carpentry for many years. He has been a lifelong resident of Tillamook County. Mr. Thun was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Tillamook. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, clamming, and traveling. He is survived by his wife, Kenno Thun of Tillamook; daughter, Jeannie Shaw of Tillamook; grandchildren, Brad and Tori Shawn, both of Kirkland, Wash. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 20 at 11 AM at the Church of the Nazarene in Tillamook with Rev. Alan Mortimer officiating. Vault interment at Sunset Heights Cemetery, Tillamook. Those who wish may make contributions to the Nazarene Church Memorial Fund.

NAME:  Irene Mabel (nee Hushbeck) Webb

Death of Mrs. Webb                
Mrs. Edwin Webb died suddenly at her home on the Hushbeck place, Wednesday morning. Mrs. Webb had been ailing for a week or more, but was not considered dangerously ill. Affection of the heart was the cause. Her many friends will be pained to learn of her unexpected death. Irene Mable Hushbeck was born in Watsonville, California, November 14th, 1883. In November, 1891, she came to Oregon City, Oregon, with her folks, moving to Cloverdale in June the following year. On February 27, 1907, she was married to Edwin J. Webb of Cloverdale, Ore. Two children were born to this union, Lewis, age ten, and Merrill, age eight, both living. She died April 23, 1918, leaving a husband, two children, two sisters, four brothers, and mother to mourn her death.

                Funeral services for Vern Ray Hushbeck, 78, were held in Cloverdale Baptist Church Monday with Rev. Wayne Harding officiating. Music was by Mrs. Harding and Mrs. Gary Ellerbrook. Interment, under the auspices of Lundberg & Sons, was in Oretown Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were Vic Learned, Sr., Eric Johnson, Emery Brandi, Walter Caspell, Loyal Leabo, and Robert Warren.

                Mr. Hushbeck had lived in the Cloverdale area almost all of his life, coming as an infant from his birthplace Oregon City. His parents were Lewis & Sarah Kennedy Hushbeck, among the pioneers of the county. Surviving are his wife, the former Edna Compton, of the family home in Cloverdale. They were married May 1, 1915 in Tillamook. He was a retired dairy farmer and a member of Cloverdale Baptist Church. A number of nieces and nephews survive.

Edna May Hushbeck

                Edna May Hushbeck died in Lincoln City on Dec. 20 at the age of 97. She was the daughter of Albert and Mary Compton, and was born in Bay Center, WA, on Dec. 17, 1893. Her grandparents, Amos and Lucy Compton, moved from New York to Iowa and Colorado, and then to Albany, Oregon. In 1872 the family moved to Tillamook County near Cloverdale where they homesteaded. Mrs. Hushbeck’s parents inherited part of the original homestead and moved to Cloverdale in 1914. A year after moving with her family to Cloverdale, she was united in marriage to their neighbor, Ray Hushbeck on May 1, 1915. Mr. Hushbeck preceded her in death on April 15, 1970.

                Besides working the farm with her husband, Mrs. Hushbeck was also a telephone operator in Cloverdale in the 1930s. She was an excellent piano player. She joined the Cloverdale Baptist Church in the fall of 1929. She is survived by several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services are pending in Care of Waud’s Funeral Home, Tillamook.

                Harold Leroy Hushbeck, 73, died in a local hospital Jan. 8. Mr. Hushbeck was born in Cloverdale on Jan. 26, 1912, the son of Clarence A. Hushbeck and May E. Webb Hushbeck. Mr. Hushbeck moved to Tillamook with his family when he was six years old. He was a 1931 graduate of Tillamook High School, started work as a logger after high school. He bought a dairy farm in Garibaldi in 1950. While running the farm, he drove school bus for School District 56, and he later worked for six years as custodian for the Garibaldi Grade School, retiring in 1969. He was married to Mildred Fellman in Astoria on Nov. 17, 1934.

                He is survived by his wife, Mildred Hushbeck of Bay City; one daughter, Carol Parson, Houston, TX; two sons, Stan Hushbeck of Selma and Ralph Hushbeck of Billings, MT; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Hushbeck was a Tillamook County Pioneer, a member of the Tillamook Elks Lodge 1437, and the Quartz Site General Gem and Mineral Club of Quartz Site, AZ.

                Funeral services for Mr. Hushbeck were held Jan. 11 in Waud’s Funeral Home, Tillamook, with the Rev. James Berry of the Idaville Bible Church officiating. Pallbearers were Keith Thompson, Arnold Waldron, Clarence Hail, Dale Buck, Denys Beller, and Lee Thun. Interment was in the Sunset Heights Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Tillamook. Those who wish may contribute to the American Cancer Society or the Medical Research Foundation.

Pioneer Resident Passes Away

                Jesse Grant Kennedy, 86, a pioneer resident of Tillamook County, passed away at the local hospital on November 24, after an illness of four years. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 29, at Waud’s Chapel at 1:00 PM. He is survived by his widow, Laura Ellen Kennedy of Tillamook; sons, Charles Kennedy of Cloverdale and Dr. William Kennedy of Olympia, Washington; grandchildren, Robert Kennedy of Los Angeles, Margaret Kennedy of New York City, and Mrs. Anita Parks of Cloverdale, Oregon.

                Jesse Grant Kennedy was born on January 15, 1865, at Sacramento, California. When he was about two years of age, his family moved to San Jacinto, California, where his father ran a sheep ranch. There he attended grammar school until he was ready for the eighth grade when his family moved to Oregon City, and there he completed grammar school. He then went to work at the Oregon City Electric Company and is credited with wiring the first private residence for Electricity in Oregon City. In 1890 he moved to Woods and bought a farm on the Nestucca River and in that year married Laura Ellen Rhodes. Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy have made their home at 909 2nd Avenue East for many years. Mr. Kennedy had a small shop in his garage where he did mechanical work and some cabinet work, building boats, and his own trailer house. He liked to fish and he also spent many hours with his fiddle and other instruments.

                Funeral services were Thursday, November 29 at Waud’s Chapel with Rev. Fletcher Forster officiating. Bearers were Dave Steinbach, Louis Nielsen, Fred Thun, Ed Hadley, Ray Husbeck, and Joe Laurence. Interment was in the Hebo IOOF Cemetery.

Charles R. Kennedy

                Charles R. Kennedy, son of Mrs. Laura Kennedy of Tillamook and the late J. G. Kennedy, passed away suddenly at his home at Pacific City, Oregon following a sudden heart attack at 9:00 AM Saturday morning, September 3, 1955. Charles Kennedy was born on November 8, 1892 at Oregon City, Oregon. He was married on August 8, 1914 at Tillamook. Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy lived for a time in the McMinnville area and then moved to Tillamook where he followed the trade of carpentry and at the same time operated a ranch at Hebo. The past five years, they have resided in Pacific City.

                He had a great many friends in this area who will be saddened by his passing. He has been a devoted husband and father and son. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Irma May Kennedy of Pacific City; a daughter, Mrs. Don Parks of Hood River, OR; mother, Mrs. Laura Kennedy of Tillamook; bother, Dr. William Kennedy of Olympia, WA; and grandchildren, Charlsie Parks, Carol Parks and Donita Parks, all of Hood River.

                Services were held on Wednesday, September 7, 1955 in Waud’s Cahpel at 2:00 PM with Rev. Aldis Webb officiating, and interment in the Tillamook IOOF Cemetery. Bearers were Lloyd Kellow, Warren Gilman, Joe Laurentz, Ernest Laurentz, Roy Hushbeck, and Carl Wallace. Waud’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Laura E. Kennedy, Beloved Pioneer Dies Wednesday

                Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Ellen Kennedy, beloved pioneer citizen of Tillamook County, will be held on Saturday at 1:00 PM, April 13th, at Waud’s Funeral Home. Mrs. Kennedy passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 1957 at the age of 85 at the Bennett Nursing Home in Tillamook where she had been ill for some time. Rev. Wilmer Briggs of the Methodist Church, of which she was a member, will conduct the services. Interment will be in the Hebo Cemetery.

                Laura Ellen Kennedy was born on October 25, 1872 at Denver, Colorado, the daughter of William Rhodes and Missouri Ann Lavender. She came to Tillamook County in 1882 over the wagon road to Hebo and lived in that vicinity for many years, before coming to Tillamook to reside. She was married to Jesse G. Kennedy in 1890. To their marriage were born two sons, William and Charles Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy passed away in November 24, 1951.

                Many, many people knew and loved Mrs. Kennedy. She was a friendly person and never enjoyed herself more than when entertaining or visiting with her family and friends. She was from a long-lived family. Not many years ago, five of the Rhodes girls celebrated their all passing their eightieth birthday anniversary, an occasion of which she was very proud. Mrs. Kennedy was an ardent democrat and enjoyed immensely election times. Many people will recall that she was always the first person in the county to pay her taxes. She made it a point to be there first. She was a member of the Methodist Church, the Pioneer Association, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

                She is survived by her son, Dr. William Kennedy of Olympia, WA; a daughter, Mrs. Antone Ekrom of Gayland, WA; two grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Joanna Farmer of Beaver, OR; Elizabeth Gunnison, Murray, UT; and Minnie Brooks, San Francisco, CA; and brother, Grover Rhodes of Richmond, CA. Her son Charles died only recently.

                Funeral services for Irma May Kennedy of 909 Main Avenue will be conducted Friday, November 8, at 2:00 PM in the Memorial Chapel of Lundberg and Son with Dr. Aldis L. Webb officiating. Mrs. Kennedy was born in Elkton, OR, on August 30, 1893 and passed away at her home on November 4 at the age of 65 years one month and four days. She had been a resident of Tillamook the past year and a half and in the Pacific City area a number of years.

                Mrs. Kennedy was married to Charles Kennedy in Tillamook on August 8, 1914. He preceded her in death three years ago. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Anita Parks of Hood River and three grandchildren, Charlsie Ann, Carol Ilene, and Donita Ione. Vault interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery with arrangements entrusted to Lundberg and Son.

SHOT DEAD. The Same Old Story—Mistaken for a Bear

Jerry Kennedy was shot and instantly killed by his brother Jessy one day last week while hunting in the mountains near Nestucca. They were hunting for bear and lost each other, when all at once, Jerry appeared in the brush about twenty years away. Jessy raised his gun and fired, and was horrified to hear his brother cry out, “I’m hurt.” He died instantly, and it was found that a full load of shot had penetrated his breast. Jerry was about 21 years of age, and his brother a little older. The older brother is almost insane with grief.

Donald C. Parks Dies After Sudden Heart Attack

                Donald Cameron Parks of 909 Main Avenue passed away suddenly at the home Monday, June 29, 1959 at the age of 48 years following a sudden heart attack. Mr. Parks was born at Warman, Saskatchewan, Canada, on August 5, 1910. He has been a resident of this community for one and one-half years, coming here from Hood River, OR. He was employed as a carpenter at the Diamond Lumber Company plywood plant. He was married to Anita Kennedy at Cathlamet, WA, on May 26, 1946. They have three children. He was a member of the Hood River Elks Lodge and of Tillamook Lodge, Loyal Order of the Moose.

                He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Anita; three little girls, Charlsie Ann, Carol Ilene and Donita Ione, all of Tillamook; his mother, Mrs. Margaret McGee Parks of Hood River; nine sisters, Mrs. Helen Larch, Mrs. Dorothy Billingsley, Mrs. Ann Fletcher, Mrs. Jessie Butterfield, Mrs. Ruth Hill, all of Hood River; Mrs. Edith Hood of San Diego, CA; Mrs. Marjorie Dyer of Mayville, OR; Mrs. Mary Hendrickson of La Mesa, CA; Mrs. Evelyn Woody of Cedar City, UT; and one brother, Joseph Parks of Hood River.

                Services will be held Thursday, July 2, 1959 at 10:30 AM at the Memorial Chapel of Lundberg and Son with Rev. V. F. Deditius officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 PM at the Pine grove Cemetery at Hood River, OR.

Anita Rose Parks

                Anita Rose Parks, 52, a 14-year resident of Tillamook, died in a fire at her home before dawn, Jan. 1. Mrs. Parks was the mother of three girls, a member of Ladies of the Moose auxiliary, and worked as a cook. Rev. Sydney Gaither directed funeral services for Mrs. Parks at Waud’s Funeral Home Jan. 6. JoAnn Widmer was organist. Pallbearers were Charles Lynn, Pat Andrus, Steve Andrus, Dennis Foland, Greg DeNoble, and George Urrey. Interment was at Sunset Heights Mausoleum.

                Donita and Carol Parks, both of Tillamook, survive their mother, as does the third daughter, Mrs. Charlsie Bivens of Phoenix, AZ. There is one grandchild.
