DROWNED-A young man named Thos. Hickey was drowned in the Yamhill river near McMinnville, on Sunday. He with a number of others was in swimming. His brother seeing him suddenly throw up both hands and sink went to his assistance but came near being drowned also. The deceased was brought down to East Portland and buried yesterday afternoon. correspondent in Yamhill on the 11th inst. writes "There seems to be
no abatement of the supposed small pox on the Yamhill in the
vicinity of Sheridan, and I learn that in some families all are
afflicted with it. The deaths in the locality have been Benj.
Franklin and two children. To day I hear that Mr. Geo. Dunbar is
dead and that his family are all down with it. No new cases on the
Agency.

| F.M. Stow of
Yamhill county was killed last week by a falling tree. He was
cleaning some land by burning the trees down. one of them falling
unexpectedly, it caught him before he could get out of the way,
breaking both legs, a thigh, his back and crushing his skull. He was
an old citizen of Yamhill and leaves a large family.

an old citizen of Yamhill, died some days ago. He was 74 years old.

Mrs. Lucinda Millican, who with her
husband and family settled in Yamhill county at a very early day,
died on the 24th inst. at her home near Lafayette. She was 66 years
of age.

Wm. Yager aged 36 died suddenly in Yamhill
about five miles from McMinnville on the 4th. It was early in the
morning and he was burning some brush near the house. He had carried
a bucket to protect a pile of rails. Presently his wife went to call
him to breakfast and found him lying dead. It was heart disease.

Two little children of R.A. Cooper, of
Wheatland, Oregon, fell into an open fireplace a few days ago. One
died a few minutes after the accident, and the other, it is thought,
is fatally injured.

Vernon James Orcutt of Newberg, Ore., died Monday, March 31, 2008, at Chehalem Health and Rehab. He was 93. Mr. Orcutt was born June 29, 1914, in Tiff City, Mo., to Ira and Julia Pearl (Howard) Orcutt. He was raised in the Ozarks, living in Newberg as a teen for a couple of years and then returned to Oklahoma. He moved to Hood River, Ore., in 1943, and lived in the Pine Grove area. He owned and operated a painting and wallpaper hanging business. He was a member of the Mount Hood Assembly of God Church. He married Lucille Haughn on April 29, 1935, in Neosho, Mo. She preceded him in death in 2007. He was also preceded in death by one child, V.J. Orcutt in 1980. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Brewer of Miami, Dora Bailey of Dundee, Ore., and Linda Hazen of Willard, Ore.; 17 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, eight stepgreat-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. June 24, 1933 - Feb. 1, 2000 WILLAMINA - Gerald Schwalen, 66, died Tuesday. Cause of death was unavailable. he was born in Amery, Wis., and served in the Navy during the Korean War, then for 23 years, retiring in 1974. He worked for Champion Plywood until 1980, retiring from Rogers machinery in Tualatin in 1990. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gold mining. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and Linn County Miners. Survivors include his wife, Kathy; sons, Nathan and Leonard, both of Willamina; daughter Wanda Harrison of California; sisters, Mary Mendenhall of Salem, Sally Shook of Milwaukee, Linda Cary of Fredericksburg, Va. and nine grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Adamson's Sheridan Funeral Home. Interment will be in Willamette national cemetery in Portland. Blankenship, 48, passes away suddenly; funeral services today Funeral services for Orie C. Blankenship, 48, were held Thursday at 2 PM in the Chapel of Adamson’s Funeral Home in Sheridan. Blankenship passed away Saturday evening after a severe heart attack at his home near Fort Hill. He was born on February 11, 1910 at Williston, North Dakota, the son of Lawrence and Marilla Young Blankenship, and moved to Oregon about 20 years ago. He was married at Vancouver, Washington, to Alice Thun and they have made their home near Willamina since that time. He was active in the Sheridan Rodeo Association and had worked at the plywood mill in Willamina since 1940. Surviving are his wife, Alice, Willamina; two daughters, Bonny Blankenship, Willamina, and Clairabel Kepford of Willamina; mother, Marilla Woods of Dester, Oregon; sister, Essie Porter of Dexter; brother, Weldon Blankenship of Alaska; and one grandchild. Death Claims War Mother – Rites Held Sunday For Mrs. LaPort
DAYTON, Sept. 12—Mrs. Lillie Anne LaPort, 72, died at the home here
of Mrs. Helen McDonald, early Friday morning. She is survived by one
son, Walter, Cloverdale; two grandchildren; and two brothers, J. G.
Kennedy, Tillamook, and Sam Kennedy of California. One son, Fred,
was killed in action in France during the World War. She was a gold
star mother and went to France in 1931. Also, she was a member of
the Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held from the McDonald home Sunday. The
Rev. V. L. Patton officiated. Members of the Newberg American Legion
Post were pallbearers. Burial was in the Brookside Cemetery.

Frank LaPort, 66, Dies Here Monday
Frank LaPort, 66, well known as a painter here, died suddenly
following a heart attack Monday. He had been suffering from heart
trouble for some time. Funeral services were held from the Macy &
Son Chapel Wednesday afternoon, and burial was at Yakima, Wash.,
this (Thursday) afternoon. Mr. LaPort was born Aug. 26, 1869 at
Pender, Neb., and is survived by two sons, Omar L. of Sidney, Iowa,
and Leonard of Randolph, Iowa; two daughters, Pearl of Four Hors,
Wyo., and Mabel Ferrell of Randolph, Iowa; and one sister, Mrs. H.
A. Tyler of Leavenworth, Wash.

Lafayette, Ore. – After 55 years' residence in Yamhill county, Mrs. Nancy Ann Olds, pioneer of 1852, who was married to James H. Olds, near Fort Boise, Idaho, on their way across the plains, died September 4. She was a native of Ohio, aged 72. She leaves a widower, three sons and two daughters, namely: D.V. Olds of Lafayette; E.M. and P.P. Olds of Lafayette; Mrs. Delia Linville of Toledo, Ore., and Mrs. Katie Ferguson of Newberg. DUNDEE and WITHERELL Two Women Die as Car Goes Over Cliff MARINETTE, Wis., Aug. 24.— Mrs. Elden Grier of Dundee and Miss May Witherell of Portland, Ore., aunt of Mrs. Leo Eggouer of this city, were killed while returning to Portland from a weekend stay in Roseburg, Ore. Their automobile left the road on a curve near Eugene, Ore., plunged over a telephone pole lying on the ground, went down a sloping bank about seventy-five feet, then dropped forty feet over a cliff. Miss Witherell was killed when thrown from the car. Mrs. Grier was pinned beneath the car and burned to death. Both women were former Marinette residents. William R. Smith, 79, Passed Away Monday Morning William Riley Smith, a resident of Willamina since 1920, died at his home here Monday morning at 8:20 o'clock, after an illness of four years of kidney and bladder disease. He was first engaged in the restaurant business here, and later he and his son, earl erected the Coast Highway Garage, and he still owned that business and some residential property here at the time of his death. The deceased was born at Springfield, Ill., January 8, 1852, and was 79 years, 6 months and 19 days of age when he passed away. During several years of his boyhood, he resided near Abraham Lincoln, and on more than one occasion sold apples to the man that was afterwards to become a president of immortal fame. After his marriage, Mr. Smith resided in Oklahoma for a number of years, and it was in that state on January 9, 1898 that his wife, Alta Sprague Smith, and their son, Archie, passed away. Later the deceased moved with his family to Jamestown, Kansas. It was there in 1909 that he became converted and united with the Methodist church, where he retained his membership until his death. Mr. Smith is survived by six sons and a daughter. The sons are: Benjamin A. Smith and Orlando L. Smith, both of Jamestown, Kansas, and Harvey D. Smith, Earl G. Smith, Verness E. Smith and Leslie R. Smith, all of Willamina. The daughter is Mrs. Oda D. Linton, of Willamina. besides these children, the deceased is survived by 31 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the Thomas Chapel at Sheridan, Rev. F.G. Drake, pastor of the Willamina Methodist Episcopal church, officiating, with interment in the Mt. Saturday, March 16, 1895 John W. Wagner was found dead in his bed at McMinnville last Sunday afternoon. His death was pronounced by the coroner the result of natural causes. Wagner was 62 years old, and a native of Indiana. He was buried by the Grand Army. (Submitted by Jim Dezotell) |

Saturday, March 16, 1895 Susan Beaumont died at Sheridan March 9, aged 83 years and 32 days. She crossed the plains with her husband, James P. Morgan, in 1853. Six children – H. B. and J. M. Morgan of Tillamook; P. W. Morgan, of North Yamhill; Mrs. C. A. Tyler, of Kansas; Mrs. E. Childers, and Mrs. T. N. Faulconer, of Sheridan – with a number of grandchildren, survive her.
