Dr. John S. Borneman, dean of Berks County physicians, died at his home, 229 East Philadelphia Avenue, at 1:50 a.m. today. On March 15, he would have celebrated his 56th year as a practicing physician. He was aged 81 years. Dr. Borneman was one of the oldest practicing physicians in the East.Dr. John S. Borneman, dean of Berks County physicians, died at his home, 229 East Philadelphia Avenue, at 1:50 a.m. today. On March 15, he would have celebrated his 56th year as a practicing physician. He was aged 81 years.
He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and was widely known. In recent years he had been honored at a number of "old timers" banquets.
He was stricken last week and his attending physican, Dr. Richard G. Argens, detected a rapidly developing uremia condition, which finally caused his death.
On march 15, 1878, Dr. Borneman was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and had been actively engaged in his profession, until a few weeks ago. Although of the old school of medicine, the physician adapted himself to the modern conditions and closely followed the new happenings in the medical field. Dr. Borneman always stoutly maintained the day of the general practitioner has not passed. He was a member of the Berks County Medical Society and a former president of the organization; the Pennsylvania State Medical Society and the American Medical Association.
He was the last member of his family. There survive his widow Mary (Shaner) and the following daughters: Elsie, wife of Charles C. Burdan, ice cream manuafacturer; Amy at home; Helen, a graduate of Penn State and Johns Hopkins University. His parents were the late Isaac H. and Esther M. (Stauffer)Borneman.
As a youth, he had an ambition to become a school teacher. This object he achieved, teaching school in New Hanover for four terms, in Upper Merion for one term and one term at Hatboro. While teaching he continued his studies and later entered the medical school of the University of Pennsylvania. He received his degree in 1878, being one of a class of 127 students. After graduating from the University, Dr. Borneman began practice in Sassamansville. After 23 months in that community he moved to this borough, occupying the same office during his entire career as a local physician. During Dr. Borneman's nearly 56 years of active practice he attended more than 3,500 maternity cases. Up until his fatal illness he had not missed a day at his office in 38 years. Only once before in his lifetime was he unable to attend to his practice because of illness. That was when he was stricken with an attack of typhoid fever about 39 years ago.
Funeral Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the home. Interment in Fairview Cemetery. The Rev. George G. Greenawald, pastor of Good Shepard Reformed Church will officiate. The body may be viewed Monday evening. The J.J. Brown Estate has charge.
