Manwiller, Dorothy F. Services were held for Dorothy F. Manwiller, 84, formerly of Butter Lane, Exeter Township, who died June 16 in St. Joseph Medical Center. Manwiller had been a resident of Manor-Care Health Services Inc., Muhlenberg Township, where she had resided since April. Her husband, Irvin D. Manwiller, died in 1990. Born in Stony Creek Mills, she was a member of Zion (Spies) Evangelical Reformed Church, Alsace Township. Surviving are a half brother and three half sisters. Manwiller, George H., Sr. Services will be held Feb. 12, 10:30 a.m. in the Leibensperger Funeral Home, Hamburg, for George H. Manwiller Sr., 70, who died of natural causes Feb. 8 in his Frontier Avenue, Bern Township residence. Burial will be in St. John's (Gernant's) Cemetery, Ontelaunee Township. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia A. (Vance) Manwiller, who died March 9, 1998. Born in Bern Township, he was a son of the late Paul A. and Myrtle M. (Geiger) Manwiller. Until retiring in 1993, he was employed as a mechanic and shop foreman by Ontelaunee Orchards for 44 years. Surviving are two daughters, Tina M. (Manwiller) Chavis, with whom he resided, and Sharon L. Manwiller, Leesport, and five sons: George H. Manwiller Jr., Annville, Lebanon County; Ricky L. Manwiller, Robesonia; Richard A. Manwiller, Kenneth E. Manwiller, and David H. Manwiller, all of Leesport; and a stepson, Paul K. Vance, Lock Haven, Clinton County. There are also 10 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, and three great-grandsons. Manwiller, Harold L. Private services were held for Harold L. Manwiller, 77, of Harman Road, Exeter Township, who died March 27 in his residence. He was the husband of June A. (Tothero) Manwiller. Born in Exeter Township, he had been employed for 32 years as a truck driver by D. B. Diefenderfer Inc., St. Lawrence, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Zion Spies Evangelical Reformed Church, Alsace Township. Manwiller is also survived by two sons, William Snyder, Reading, and Ronald L. Manwiller, Exeter Township; and two daughters, Carolyn L. (Manwiller) Christman, Lower Alsace Township, and Bonnie L. (Manwiller) Roth, Exeter Township. Other survivors include two sisters, Dorothy (Manwiller) Fick, Temple, and Marian (Manwiller) Shaub, Akron, Lancaster County; and four brothers: George, Exeter Township; Clarence, Pikeville; Stanley, Temple; and Warren, Dover, Tenn. Manwiller, Harold W. Harold W. Manwiller, 78, formerly of Ruscombmanor Township, died June 8 in the Wyomissing Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Reading, where he had resided more than five years. Born in Oley Township, he was a son of the late David W. and Catherine H. (Shane) Manwiller. Manwiller was employed as a carpenter until his retirement. He was a graduate of Oley Valley High School. Manwiller was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Spangsville. Surviving are two brothers, Irvin H., Boyertown, and Paul E., Reading. Services will be private. Mellert, Arnold Arnold Mellert, died at 8 o'clock this morning at his residence, 634 North 3d St., of hemorrhages of the stomach. He was taken ill early Sunday morning with a violent hemorrhage. He had been in failing health for some time. Deceased was chairman of the Mellert Foundry and Machine company, and a member of the Reading Foundry company. He was born in Germany, June 24, 1824, and was consequently in the 62d year of his age. August 1, 1837, he landed at Perth Amboy, from where he came to Reading, and resided here. He was at first associated with his father as a locksmith, after which he engaged in the stove and tinware business. After this he formed a partnership with Thomas L. Addison in the machine business after which he became connected with the two companies, of which he was a leading and prominent member, at the time of his death. When a resident of the 5th ward Mr. Mellert was a member of Select Council and served several terms. He was a Republican but took no active part in politics. In the iron and machine trade he was widely known throughout the country Mr. Mellert was an expert in sketching from nature. During the summer of 1873 he visited Europe and kept a minute diary of the incidents and scenes of the trip. He kept a diary all through life. Deceased was married to Miss Mary B. Phillippi Feb. 21, 1851 and the widow and three children -- Mrs. Peter D. Wanner, Albert H. and Miss Agnes Mellert survive. Mr. Mellert was conscious to the last. The Mellert pipe works have suspended operations until after the funeral. 17 May 1886 Reading Eagle

Merkel, Jacob The funeral of Jacob Merkle took place from the residence of his son-in-law, Jno., at Shultzville, and was largely attended. The remains reposed in a black covered casket, with silver handles, with plate on lid inscribed "At Rest." Undertakers, D. C. Brumbach & Co., Rev. A. M. Weber officiated. Merkel, Susannah Sad Drowning Accident. We learn the following particulars of a sad drowning accident from the Allentown Daily News: On Saturday morning last, about two o'clock, Miss Susannah Merkel and her sister ,resideing near Grimsville, Greenwich township, Berks County, were coming from an apple-butter party which was held at the residence of Daniel Diettrich, and when they were almost home it commenced to rain and the girls commenced to run. While crossing the bridge where a part of the railing was broken off, Susannah made a mistep and fell into the creek. Her sister ran home for assistance, but before assistance arrived the poor girl was drowned. 17 Sep 1872 Reading Eagle
