| O'Reilly, Mary A. | Miss Mary A. O'Reilly died at the home of her mother, Mrs. Catherine C. O'Reilly, widow of Patrick O'Reilly, 302 South 5th, after a lingering illness of an infection of the lungs, aged 35 years. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. | O'Reilly, Patrick | Patrick O'Reilly, one of Reading's best known and most wealthy citizens, died yesterday morning at four o'clock, after a lingering illness. He was born in the county of Meath, Ireland, in 1810, and came to this country when he was 12 years of age. He was a thorough business man, honest, and upright in his dealings, and was universally respected and esteemed. He took an active part in everything that was calculated to promote the business interests of the city. Mr. O'Reilly was a contractor nearly all his life. He had contracts on the Union canal and Philadelphia and Reading railroad, when they were contracted and built 16 miles of the Lebanon Valley railroad. He constructed the entire Camden and Atlantic railroad, and had large contracts on the Schuylkill and Susquehanna railroad, and a number of other roads. He established the first shoe manufactory in the city of Reading about 1848. Mr. O'Reilly constructed the first railroad that was ever built in Ireland--The Waterford and Limerick, which did much to enhance the prosperity of that country nearly 40 years ago. when he came to the United States he settled in Camden, but subsequently came to Reading where he has resided ever since, He was progressive and enterprising; and it was through his influence that many of the great railroads and canal improvements were made in Eastern Pennsylvania for the past 25 years. He constructed the Lehigh canal. Soon after he came to Reading he was married to Catherine Felix, daughter of the late Anthony Felix. Mr. O'Reilly was unobtrusive in his ways, and was a prominent member of St. Peter's Catholic church. He was born on March 15, 1810, the day of his death bringing down his age to 70 years, 10 months and one day. Deceased leaves five children--John F., Francis P., Anthony J., James A., and Mary A. | Oswald, John | KILLED BY HIS SON: The Father Was Intoxicated and Was Abusing His Wife. READING, Pa., March 19 - John Oswald, a farmer, aged 45 years, of Oley, this county, was killed by his 16-year-old son last night. Oswald came home intoxicated and started to abuse his wife, when the son interfered. The father then turned his attention to the boy. the latter seizing a heavy stick struck his father across the forehead. The father died in ten minutes. The boy was placed in jail here this afternoon. He claims the murder was accidental and that he struck his father in self defense.
