Ikeler's Teachers

Marianna Burgess-started to teach a second term at Ikelers but resigned to go with her parents to Nebraska where her father had been appointed Indian Agent to the Pawnees by president Grant. The Pawnee Agnecy having been assigned at that time to the Baltimore Yearly Meeting of Friends. Marianna was one of the teachers in the manual labor department in Nebraska and went with them when the agency moved to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. She resigned form there in 1879 and was soon after appointed to be one of the teachers of the government Indian Industrial Schools at Carlisle, Penna. She held that position four years. She was then appointed Superintendent of Publications and Manager of the Printing Office at Carlisle, the work being done by Indian students. This little publication was called “The Indian Helper”.
During the time that Marianna Burgess was active in the Indian School, she arranged with friends and families she had learned to know from students form Carlisle to spent the summer working on farms in the locality and going to the local schools in the winter.
Marianna Burgess ended her days in California, living with her brothers. At one time they ray a May’s poultice factory there. Alvina Betz, the fourth sister of the Bertz Family to teach at Ikelers, finished the school term that Marianna Burgess had started.

Elizabeth Bruner-taught a summer school in 1873. She was the daughter of John and Martha Fairman Bruner, great-granddaughter of William and Mary Fairman. Dr. John Bruner of Bloomsburg was her brother. She married Thomas Fortner.

Lettie VanHorn-1873-1874- from Greenwood Valley, sister of Robert VanHorn.

Allie Rich, Harvey Strong-1874-1875-Allie Rich became ill and her term was finished by Harvey Strong. She was the daughter of Benjamin Rich of Greenwood Valley, cousin of Bess Rich, wife of the former John Ruckle of Millville. Allie was born 1855 died 1933. Twice married, William Lawton was her first and after his death she married William Underwood.

Elizabeth Bruner-1875-1876

L.P. Sterner-1876-1877-failed as a teacher and resigned. Later became a successful teacher and superintendent of schools in Bloomsburg. Thomas Kester, son of Jacob Kester, finished his term.

Richard Kester-2 terms-1877-1879- son of Aaron Kester. Lived with his parents on the original Kester Homestead. Married Eleanor Kindt.

Mr. James Campbell-1879-1880, boarded at William Ikelers

Ruth Ann Kester-1880-1881-daughter of Jacob Kester. Graduate of Millville Seminary (at one time called Greenwood Seminary) and Swarthmore College and taught in Lycoming County and at Mt. Holly in southern New Jersey.

Jessie Fisher-1881-1882-went to Orangeville Academy and Lutherville Seminary near Baltimore, Maryland. Married Rolland Ikeler. She taught 1882-1883 at Lightstreet.

Alvah Kitchen-1882-1883- From near Welliversville. Some Indian disturbance in the school caused some concern during this term but was settled without too much trouble.

Laura Heacock-1888-1889-daughter of Amos Heacock. She was a graduate of the Greenwood Seminary.

Ida Jacoby-1890-1891- daughter of Samuel and Lucinda Jacoby of Welliversville. Married Orville Eves.

Eva Faus-1891-1892- sister of Frank Patton’s second wife. Rev. William Faus, who was the minister of Ikeler’s church in 1914, was a brother

Leah Folmer-1892-1893- a quiet, unassuming, successful teacher

Bessie Vance-1893-1894-daughter of John Vance. Married Willis DeMott

Martie Henrie-1894-1895-married Charlie Kinney. Her son Clair, was a prisoner of war.

Amelia Eves-1896-1896-Married John Farron

Laura Ruckle-1896-1897-daughter of Washington Ruckle

Mabel Moyer-2 terms-1897-1899-Normal graduate. Was so young that she never told her age.

Myron Mordan-2 terms-1901-1903 Lived in with his parents, Harmon and Rosetta Mordan

Rena Savage-1903-1904-From Benton, Bloomsburg State Normal School graduate. Illinois State Course of Study first introduced at Ikelers.

Clark Kitchen-1904-1905-Bloomsburg State Normal School graduate. First finals given at Ikelers. Later taught at Millville Friend’s Seminary. Married Mabel Parker. Moved to Rocky Ford, Co. and on west.

Myron Mordan-1905-1908-first graduates under Illinois State courses at Ikelers.

Elizabeth Dreibelbis-1908-1909-Bloomsburg State Normal School graduate. Daughter of Amos and Anna Ikeler Dreibelbis married Lawrence Orner

Ava Dennen-2 terms-1909-1911-Penna. State Course of study first used. Descendant of Ikeler and Fairman settlers of Ikeler Hill

Lena Kitchen-3 terms-1915-1918-Before teaching at Ikelers she had taught at Kitchen’s school. Following her last term at Ikelers she took nurse’s training at the Philadelphia Methodist Hospital. After she completed training she was a nurse there. She was head nurse for approximately twenty years.

Muriel Rider-1918-1919-taught later at Millville. Graduated in dietetics at Methodist Hospital, Philadelphia. Held a position at Philipsburg Hospital. Was a dietician at Friends Hospital, Frankfort, Philadelphia. Married Albert Weston in 1926. died when their baby was born.

Nola Merrill-3 terms-1919-1922-died June 14, 1947 after a lingering illness following an automobile accident. She was the oldest daughter of Orin and Savilla Ikeler Merrill. Was born October 22, 1902.

Jesse Yocum-1922-1923- was married and lived at Mordansville. Died March 8, 1956 aged 55 years.

Melva Kile-3 terms-1928-1931- From a letter: “My first teaching position was at Ikeler’s Sept. 10, 1928. Three very happy and enjoyable years. Nowhere else have I met such lovable children and hospitality shown ato the frightened little teacher of ten years ago.” Daughter of Ella Mordan Kile died July 30, 1960
