Elk County was created on April 18, 1843 from parts of Jefferson, Clearfield and McKean Counties and named for the Elk which inhabited the region. Its county seat is Ridgway.

• Harry English and the shooting of Frank Warnith and Phillip Vollmer  
  On April 17, 1880, Harry English shot Frank Warnith and Phillip Vollmer when they tried to arrest him. Both later died.  These articles cover the shooting, his arrest and acquittal for murder.
