Scottdale Man Died in Florida Victim of Consumption
Scottsdale, Dec.28 - Harry Fretts, son of Daniel Fretts and brother of Postmaster B.C. Fretts, fell the victim of consumption at Daytone, Florida. Mr. Fretts, together with a party of friends, left for Florida a few weeks ago. His remains reached Scottdale this morning, but the funeral arrangements have not been made.

Open Grate Supposed to Have Caused Her Dress to Ignite.One of the most pathetic accidents that have ever happened in Fayette county occurred Wednesday afternoon in the mountains about two miles above Mt. Braddock. Mary Matthews, a deaf and dumb woman, 38 years of age, was burned to death. Miss Matthews was alone in the house at the time. It is not known how the accident happened, but, the general supposition is that her dress caught on fire from an open grate.
Miss Matthews was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Matthews. The girl's parents were not at home when the accident occured, but had been visiting neighbors. Towards evening they returned home and found their daughter lying upon the floor in the throes of death. All her clothing had been burned off, and her body was terribly mutilated. Strnage to relate, nothing in the room caught fire, although where she fell in her agonized struggles to exterminate the flames the floor was badly scorched. Miss matthews died shortly after her parents returned. Undertaker Burhans of Dunbar was called. The funeral will be held from the Matthews residence at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and interment will be in Percy Cemetery.
Foreigner Succumbed After Gangrene Set in On Broken Leg
Joe Toth, a foreigner, died at the hospital about nine o'clock Wednesday morning. Toth was injured by a fall of slate some weeks ago in the Darr Mines at Van Meter, and was brought to the hospital on November 24. He was the suffering from a broken leg. Gangrene set in and the leg had to be operated on. Toth did not improve and expired last night.
Died Wednesday Afternoon After a Lingering Illness
After a lingering illness Mrs. Amanda Wilson, wife of Contractor J.D. Wilson, died Wednesday afternoon at her late residence, No. 246 East Main Street. Hemorrhages of the lungs was the cause of her death. the funeral will take place from her late residence this afternoon at 2 o'clock, interment being in Hill Grove cemetery.
Deceased was teh daughter of Thomas and Louise Balsley and was born 44 years ago in teh old Balsley property on East Main Street. She was a life long resident of Connellsville. In 1880 she was married to contractor J.D. Wilson of Connellsville. She was a devout member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and was also a member of the Ladies' Missionary Society of teh Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Homer, Wallace, Louise, Marie, Albert, Josephine, Robert, Margaret and Ruth. her mother, Mrs. Louise Balsley, and the following brothers and sisters, also survive her: Mrs. David Percy, Samuel, Charles, Worth Balsley, all of town and Mrs. S.E. Frock?(Flock) of Uniontown.
A foreigner was caught under a fall of slate at Leisenring No. 2 this morning and died shortly afterwards. He will be furied on Sunday.
Chester Leroy Gregg, nine months old, son of George and Maude Stillwagon Gregg died Sunday at the family residence in North Pittsburg street. Funeral Monday noon from the Gregg home, with interment in Hill Grove cemetery.
Mrs. Mary E. Hall, 18 years old, wife of E.G. Hall, died Sunday at her home in No. 107 East Crawford avenue, following a brief illness. In addition to her husband, who is a Baltimore & Ohio fireman, she is survived by one child, three months old.
Returning home Thursday night from the annual reunion of Fayette County Veterans, Eli F. Huston, 82 years old, one of the oldest residents of Dawson, was stricken with pneumonia during the night and died Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock. On leaving home for Uniontown, Mr. Huston was apparently in his usual health and insisted on attending the reunion of his comrades. It is thought that he contracted a cold while making the street car trip. Mr. Huston was a son of the late William and Rebecca Hutchinson Huston. He was born in Tyrone, now Lower Tyrone township, July 29, 1835. He attended school at the Cochran district school and assisted his father on the farm. September 21, 1861, he enlisted in Company E. 85 Pennsylvania volunteer Infantry. He participated in the battle of Fair Oaks. He was mustered out on November 22, 1864. In 1872 he was made foreman at Jimtown for the Cochran & Brown Coke works. He was also a pit boss. For 10 years he was superintendent of the Fort Hill mine and coke works of the W.J. Rainey.
Previous to going to Fort Hill he was fire boss for the H.C.Frick Coke company, at Leisenring No. 1. He lived retired since 1887. In politics, he was a Democrat.
July 4, 1872, Mr. Huston was married to Catherine Hough. In addition to his widow, Mr. Huston is survived by the following children: Mrs. J.L. Cochran, wife of Dr. Cochran of connellsville; Miss Harriet Huston at home; David W. Huston of Uniontown; Mrs. William G. Duncan of Connellsville; Mrs. S.J.I. Morningstar and Mrs. Percy Sharps of Dawson. Four sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Strickler, Mrs. Emma Galley of Vanderbilt, Mrs. Anna Jenkins of St. George, W. Va.; Mrs. Rachel Soverns of Dawson and three grandchildren also survive. Mr. Huston was a member of the Cochran Memorial Methodist Church at Dawson and has a wide circle of friends in the community in which he spent all his life. Funeral Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family residence, with Rev. H.A. Baum officiating. Interment in Cochran cemetery.
Alexander Johnston, 83 years old, a resident of Franklin township virtually all his life, died Sunday at 8:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Herbert at Vanderbilt. Funeral from the home Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock and from the Flatwoods church at 2 o'clock. Interment in Flatwoods cemetery. Mr. Johnston was born in the vicinity of Broad Ford. When a child, he moved with his patents to Franklin township, where he conducted a blacksmith shop for a number of years. Seven daughters and one son survive, as follows; Mrs. William Shelkey of Curfew; Mrs. Samuel Addis of Vanderbilt; Mrs. A.M. Conn of Uniontown; Mrs. Alice Colborn, Mrs. Charles Wright of Connellsville; Mrs. Otto Weaver of Scottdale; Mrs. George Herbert of Vanderbilt and William Johnston of Uniontown.
Joe Martzell, 52 years old, died Friday in the county tubercular sanitarium. Funeral Sunday morning at 10 from St. Rita's Catholic church in the West Side. Deceased was born in Italy and was a coal miner for the H.C. Frick Coke company. His widow and a family of children survive.
Mrs. Anna McKlveen, 87 years old, died Monday afternoon at 5:15 o'clock at the home of her son-in-law, S.H. Hoop, No. 404 11th street. Death was due to the infirmities of old age.
Funeral Thrusday morning at 10 o;clock from the Hoop residence with Rev. G.L.C. Richardson, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church of which Mrs. McKlveen was a member, officiating. At 1 o;clock the funeral party will leave by automobile for Greensburg, where interment will take place in St. Clair cemetery. Funeral Director J.E. Sims will have charge. Mrs. McKlveen was born in the Ligonier valley October 11, 1829, a daughter of the late William and Nancy Tinaman Shupe. All her early life was spent in the Ligonier valley. She was twice married. Her first husband, Edward Keyser, died many years ago. Later she was married to Thomas McKlveen, who died 25 years ago last July. Since the Mrs. McKlveen made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Hoop, who moved to Connellsville from Greenburg 21 years ago. Deceased is survived by the following children to her first mariiage: W.C. Keyser of West Jefferson, O.; John Keyser of Broad Ford; Mrs. Emma Hyatt of Alliance, O., and Mrs. A.G.Gerber of Greensburg. One daughter to the second marriage, Mrs. S.H. Hoop survives. Mrs. McKlveen was an aunt of Rev. W.H.McKlveen of Dunbar.
James Morrisey, 60 years old, a resident of Trotter for a number of years, died Sunday morning at the Cottage State hospital of heart trouble. Mr. Morrisey had lived alone at Trotter for about 30 years. He was admitted to the hospital Friday night.
A.F. Pratt, a veteran of the Civil War, died early Saturday morning at his home in Uniontown following an illness of paralysis.
Rev. Charles S. Reich, assistant rector at St. Patrick's church in Augusta. Ga. died Monday afternoon in the University hospital. Rev. Reich was born at Meyersdale and was graduated from St. Charles college in Maryland. He was ordaned by Rev. J.B. Keiley of Savannah, Ga., and had been a priest for the past 16 years. The body arrived at Meyersville today for interment.
Mrs. G.M. Sanford of Toledo, Ohio died September 9 after returning from a visit at the home of Thomas Phelan of Mt. Braddock. Apoplexy was the cause of her death. Mr. and Mrs. Sanford visited in New York, Long Island and through Western Pennsylvania during the latter part of August, this being their first trip east in 36 years. Mrs. Sanford is survived by her husband and three children, all residing in Ohio. The funeral which took place on Friday of last week, was largely attended. Mrs. Sanford was one of the oldest and most respected residents of Toledo.
Wilda Mae Sheard, one year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Sheard died Monday at the family residence at Dunbar.
James H. Smith, 77 years old, a pensioner of the H.C. Frick Coke company, died Tuesday at the home of his stepson, Walter Smith at Wynn. In addition to his stepson, one daughter, Mrs. Bert Turner survives.
William Isaac Stuck, 15 years old, one of the best loved of Perryopolis boys, died Friday afternoon at his home after an illness of eight months and the entire Perry district is mourning him. William was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Stuck, and in addition to his parents, is survived by nine brothers and sisters. For three months he was at the West Penn hospital in Pittsburg, but several months ago returned home. Funeral Sunday at 2 P.M. from the home.
Charles H. Talbot, 32 years old, died Saturday night at his home at Masontown.
Mrs. Jennie Coughenour Thomas, 53 years old, wife of Robert O. Thomas, died Wednesday at noon at the Allegheny General hospital, Pittsburg, following an operation. Mrs. Thomas had been ill since the latter part of last June. Her death was not unexpected. Members of her family were at her bedside when death came. A son, Lieutenant John J. Thomas of the United States Army, located at Camp Dix. Wrightsville, N.J., arrived at the hospital on Tuesday.
Mrs. Thomas was born in Connellsville, December 7, 1864, a daughter of Gilbert Coughenour deceased, and Mrs. Rebecca Coughenour. Virtually all her life was spent in Connellsville. Thirty years ago today she was married in Connellsville to Robert O. Thomas, who with the following children survive; Lieutenant John J. Thomas, Miss Mary M. Thomas, a teacher in the city schools; William Fred, of the United States marine engineers; Robert O. Jr., and Gilbert Thomas at home. Her mother, Mrs. Rebecca Coughenour of Connellsville, two brothers, J.B. Coughenour of Confluence and Joseph H. Coughenour of Connellsville, and three sisters, Mrs. J.W. Kelly of Pittsburg; Mrs. B.F. Jones and Mrs. B.F. Johnston of Connellsville also survive. Mrs. Thomas prior to her marriage was for four years employed in the Connellsville postoffice unter Postmaster Walter McBeth. She was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church, the Philip Freeman Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, and was held in the highest esteem by her wide circle of friends in Connellsville and vicinity.
The body of Mrs. Thomas arrived here last night and was removed by funeral Director Charles C. Mitchell to the family residence in Green street, from which place the funeral took place Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. G.L.C. Richardson, of the First Methodist Episcopal church officiating. Interment in Hill Grove cemetery.

BURNS, MRS. ANNMrs. Ann Burns, 65 years old, died Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. P.J. Baker, Munhall, Pa. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary Magdalene church, Homestead, Saturday morning at 9 o'clock, interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Homestead. Besides Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Burns' is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Joseph McGrogan, Leisenring No. 1; Mrs. John Lamb, Munhall; Mrs. Earl Foster, Coraopolis, and two sons, William of Coraopolis, and John, of Cleveland. O. Mrs. Burns was well known in and about Leisenring.
COLBERT, MISS GRACEMiss Grace Colbert, 15 years old, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Newton Colbert of Liberty, died early Thursday morning of influenza.
COUGHENOUR, DAVID E.David E. Coughenour, one year and six months old, sone of Henry and Celia Sanner Coughenour of North Union township, died yesterday.
DUNCAN, MARYMary Duncan, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Duncan of Mount Braddock, died yesterday of influenza. The interment was made today in the Greek Cemetery.
EDWARDS, ORA M.Ora M. Edwards, 47 years old, died Thursday morning at her home in Menallen township of pneumonia.
KIMMEL, MRS. LEVIMrs. Ada Hart Kimmel, 34 years old, a former resident of Springfield township and wife of Lovi Kimmel, died this morning of influenza at her home at Hopwood, her husband being located there with a sawmill. She was a daughter of the late George and Nancy jane Hart and was born and reared in Springfield township. Surviving are the husband and five children: Mrs. Grace Kerns, Reed, Ira, Alvin, Jane and the baby, at home. The funeral service will be held at the cemetery at Normalville Sunday at 3 o'clock. Undertaker J.E. Sims is in charge of the arrangements.
KING, LORENZIE JESSELorenzie Jesse King, three-year-old son of Tax Collector L.J. and Mrs. Laura King of North Union township, died Thursday of bronchitis.
LLOYD, DAVIDDavid LLoyd, 35 years old, a member of the law firm of Lloyd & Arrowsmith of Pittsburg, and a former resident of North Union township, died Thursday morning in the Presbyterian hospital, Pittsburg, of influenza-pneumonia. Funeral services will be held tonight at 8 o'clock at the residence of Louis C. Groth at Mount Washington, Pa., and on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at West Leisenring. The interment will be made in Oak Grove Cemetery, Uniontown. The deceased was born at West Leisenring, a son of Hugh Lloyd, postmaster at the place. He was graduated from Grove City college in 1907 and later attended the law school of the University of Pittsburg. At the conclusino of his studies in 1910 he began the practice of law. He also was interested in the oil and gasoline business. At the time of his death he was president of the Pioneer Gasoline company and the Crystal Petroleum company. In addition to his father, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Fred Moore, of West Leisenring, and a brother, Hugh Lloyd, Jr., of Uniontown.
MOOREHEAD, CECILFollowing an illness of influenza, Cecil Moorehead, 13 years old, of Mount Braddock, died this morning.
PETROBIA, FRANKFrank Petrobia, 35 years old, of 413 Highland avenue, died last night at the emergency hospital, following an illness of influenza.
SHOENBERGER, ALEXANDER B.Alexander B. Shoenberger, 61 years old, died Thursday morning at his home in Franklin township following an illness of complication of diseases. He is survived by his widow, Julia H. Shoenberger, and the following children: Mrs. Pearl Bryson, Uniontown; Mrs. Mary Anderson, Youngstown, O.; William H. Shoenberger, in France, and Helen and Henrietta, at home.
SMITH, MRS. CATHERINEThe funeral of Mrs. Catherine Smith, who died of pneumonia, at her home at Wheeler, will be held tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock from the house. Interment in St. Joseph cemetery.
SMITLEY, MRS. ANNA MAUDEMrs. Anna Maude Smitley, 24 years old, wife of James Smitley, died Thursday night at her home at Mount Braddock of influenza.
TAYLOR, WILLIAMWilliam Taylor, about 15 years old, son of Mrs. Taylor of South Connellsville, died Thursday night of influenza. The father, John Taylor, died two weeks ago of the same malady.
TINACHIALL, MRS. MARGUERITAMra. Marguerita Timachiall, 26 years old, of Dunbar, is dead of influenza. Her husband and one son survive.
ZIVNY, JOSEPHJoseph Zivny, a well known farmer of Lower Tyrone township, died Thursday morning of influenza.

CARNEY, JOHNJohn Carney, 54 years old, died at 10 o'clock last night after being ill for a few days with pneumonia. Death occurred at the home of John Smith, First street, South Connellsville. He was employed at the plant of the Capstan Glass Company. A sister, Ella, and a brother, Lawrence, of Baltimore, survive him. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. The body was taken to the J. E. Sims funeral home to await arrangements for the funeral.
DILS, MRS. FLORENCE GALLEYMrs. Florence Galley Dils, wife of Justus D. Dils, formerly of Fayette county, died Sunday morning at her home in Pittsburg. She had resided in Pittsburg for many years and was a member of the United Brethren Church. Besides her husband, she is survived be a sister, Mrs. C.D. Lichty of Meyersdale.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday night at 7.45 o'clock in the home, followed by an additional service in the Old Frame Church, this county, Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock.
FISHER, JOSEPH A.The funeral service for Joseph Alonzo Fisher, who died Friday night in the Uniontown Hospital, was held this afternoon inthe family home in Uniontown, with Rev. T.M. Gladden of Uniontown officiating. Interment was made in White Rock Cemetery.
Mr. Fisher suffered a broken leg in the mines of the H.C. Frick Coke Company at Lemont and was apparently getting along nicely until a blood clot formed on his brain. Besides his wife he is survived by several children.
HEARTY, MRS. MARCELLAMrs. Marcella Hearty, 78 years, one month and three days old, wife of Peter Hearty, died at 12 o'clock noon Sunday at the family home at Jimtown near Dawson.
The funeral cortege will leave the family home at 8:30 o'clock tomorrow morning. Requiem high mass will be celebrated at 9 o'clock at the Immaculate Conception Church, Connellsville, with Rev. William Slattery, pastor of Sacred Heart Church at Dawson, as celebrant. Burial will be made in St. Joseph's Cemetery in charge of Funeral Director French S. Durst.
Before her death, Mrs. Hearty requested that the funeral services be private and that flowers be omitted. These requests will be carried out.
KULBACKI, MRS. BARBARASCOTTDALE, April 11 - The funeral of Mrs. Barbara Kulbacki of Everson will be held at St. Joseph's Church at Everson at 8 o'clock tomorrow morning. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Scottdale.
PORTER, EWING B.Ewing B. Porter, 77 years old, died Saturday night at the home of his sister, Miss Louisa Beeson Porter, the old Beeson homestead, Uniontown, where he had made his home for six years. He had been a resident of Fayette county all his life and was engaged in farming for many years. His wife died many years ago. Besides the sister with whom he resided, he is survived by a son, Kennedy Porter of Doylestown, another sister, Mrs. J.W. Gaddis of Uniontown and a brother, Aaron T Porter of Emporia, Kan.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home. Rev. E.A. Hodil, pastor of the Third Presbyterian Church of Uniontown, will officiate. Interment will be made in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

CULLEN, MRS. CATHERINEMrs. Catherind Cullen, 64, of 222 North Craig street, Pittsburgh, a former resident of Fayette county, died Monday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. The widow of Patrick J. Cullen who died May 5, 1933, she leaves three sons, Charles E. of Baltimore, Earl J. of Fredericktown and Ensign P.H. in the South Pacific; two grandsons, Thomas P. McTigue, who made his home with her prior to entering the service and now stationed in Columbus, Ohio, and Patrick G. Cullen of Fredericktown, and two grandaughters, Ethel Patricia and Rose Marie Cullen of Baltimore.
The body was removed to the Kisinger funeral home at Brownsville and requiem high mass will be celebrated at 10 o'clock Friday morning at St. Peter's R. C. Church at Brownsville, Rev. James A. Shay will officiate. Interment will be made in the family plot in the cemetery at Dickerson Run.
HERRILKO FUNERALThe funeral for Dolores Ann Herrilko, 15 years old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael A. Herrilko of West Leisenring, who died Sunday evening in Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, will be held Thursday afternoon. The funeral cortege will meet at the home at 2 o'clock and rites will be conducted at St. Polycarp's R. C. Church at West Leisenring at 2:30 o'clock in charge of Rev. S. Moravek, pastor. Burial will be made in Sylvan Heights Cemetery.
JONES, BENJAMIN F.Benjamin Franklin Jones, one of the city's most respected citizens, died at 12:25 o'clock Tuesday night at his home, 212 East Cedar Avenue.
He was born at Greensboro on December 8, 1863, a son of the late David Rhodes and Prscilla Stevenson Jones. He was united in marriage with Miss Lucy Coughenour of Connellsville on February 8, 1891, and to this union four children were born. He leaves his widow, two children, B.C. Jones of Pittsburgh and David R. Jones of Connellsville; 10 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Edward Jamison of Summit, N.J.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Uniontown Council of the Royal Arcanum.
The body has been removed to the Charles C. Mitchell funeral chapel in South Pittsburg street where the service will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in charge of Rev. Harry R. Roach, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be made in Hill Grove Cemetery.
LILLEY, NORMA JEANNorma Jean Lilley, eight months old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Lilley of Pleasant Valley, Bullskin township, died at 7:15 o'clock Tuesday evening at Connellsville State Hospital of pneumonia. Surviving are the parents, one sister, Nancy Lee, and these grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Lilley of Connellsville, R.D. 1, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pritts of Rockwood, R.D. 2.
The funeral will be held Friday, the time to be announced later, with Funeral Director Clyde B. Brooks in charge.
McCLAIN, DAVID B.David B. McClain, 70, of Millsboro, a former resident of Scottdale, died suddenly Saturday near Washington. He had been in poor health.
A blacksmith by trade, he formerly was in business at Scottdale. A son of the late Abraham and Nancy Tanner McClain, he was born near where the Masontown bridge spans the Monongahela River in Greene county July 2, 1874.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Amy Pearl Hess McClain; five children, Mrs. Pauline Blacka, Mrs. Ethel Westcoat, Mrs. Kathleen Keibler of Brownsville, James of Millsboro and Lieutenant Paul in Belgium, and five grandchildren.
