Bethlehem Youth, 20, Dies Mountain Climbing
A young mountain climber, William Haupert, 20 year old son of Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Haupert of Bethlehem died yesterday at the 13,000 foot level of Mount Rainier. Dr. Haupert, who is president of Moravian College and Theological Seminary is well known here.
Haupert was a member of an 11-man party attempting to scale the 14,408-foot peak by way of Ingraham Glacier. An ice bridge crumbled beneath him and dropped him 50 feet into a crevasse.
The climbers were one hour away from the summit when Haupert and Guide Gary Rose, of Edmones, Wash., plunged into the crevasse when a 200-foot snow bridge collapsed. Both men were pulled from the crevasse by other members of the party. Rose was not hurt. The victim was believed to have suffered a broken back and internal injuries.
A Coast Guard plane dropped a litter and preparations were being made to remove Haupert to a lower level where he could be flown out by helicopter. However, he died before he could be removed from the accident scene.
