J. Herbert Manbeck

J. H. Manbeck, 80, Ex-Newsman Taken by Death

J. Herbert Manbeck, retired newspaperman and one of the most widely known residents of the Lebanon area, was found dead in bed Saturday at his home, 535 North 8th Street. He was 80 on Feb. 4. Death was attributed to heart failure.

The ex-newsman and former city councilman and county coroner recently returned home after being hospitalized for several weeks.

In an interview prior to his 80th birthday, Manbeck complained of his inability "to get around like I used to." He said a recurrence of pain from the effects of a broken back suffered in a fall at his home in 1935 was causing him considerable distress. He is survived by his wife, the former Virginia F. Heilman, to whom he was married 57 years ago last Sept. 28. Mrs. Manback celebrated her 79th birthday on Jan. 23.

Also surviving is one daughter, Marion, wife of Dr. Conrad G. Maulfair, Allentown osteopathic physician. The Maulfairs have two children, Conrad Jr., a student at Lafayette College and Virginia, a student at Mary Washington College in Virginia.

Three sisters, Miss Estella Manbeck and Mrs. Arminta Hockley of Lebanon and Mrs. Mabel Van Gieseh, Watsonville, Calif., also survive. Another sister, Mrs. E. Blanche Hill, this city, died February 15.

Final Rites Are Held For John Maransky

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. today from the Rohland Parlors, Fifth and Cumberland Streets, for John Maransky, of 29 Mifflin Street, Rev. E. A. Chamberlin, pastor of Seventh Street Lutheran church officiated. Interment was in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Prof. James G. March

The entire community was shocked on Friday to hear of the death of Prof. James G. March, of Lewes Delaware.  Prof. March was a son of the late Henry March and wife, between here and Davidsburg, and was for a number of years organist at the Red Run church and a leader in social and literary affairs. The funeral was held at Annville, Lebanon county, on Saturday afternoon.

Funeral Services Held For Mrs. Kate Markley

Funeral services were held at two o'clock this afternoon for Mrs. Kate Markley from the residence 507 North Ninth Street in charge of Rev. N. P. Fake, pastor of the Memorial C. R. church. Bearers were: Russell and Clarence Wolfe, Sterling Markley, Jessie Douple, Mark Strohman and Charles Benson, all grandsons of the deceased. Burial took place in the Ebenezer cemetery in charge of C. Leroy Arnold.

LEBANON-Mildred V. Rupp Matthias, 92, of Cedar Haven, formerly of Willow Terrance, died Friday in Cedar Haven. < She retired from the former Everite Mill. She was the widow of Theodore Matthias. Surviving are three daughters, Mary A. Donmoyer of Annville, Lucy M. Levengood of Richland and Shirley Reynolds of Lebanon; a son, Theodore J. of Harrisville; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Suedberg Church of God Cemetery. Rohland Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Amos Maulfair 77, Taken By Death On Thursday

Amos Maulfair, 77, who resided on Palmyra Route 1, near Bindnagle's Church, passed away Thursday afternoon at 12:15 at his home. His death was attributed to complications after all illness of several years. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Steelstown Evengelical Church. He leaves to survive his widow, Mrs. Mabel M. Leedom Maulfair; four sons - Chester S. Maulfair, Annville Route 2; Claude S. Maulfair, Grantville Route 1; Harry S. Maulfair, Grantville Route 1 and Harvey S. Maulfair, Kearney. There are 16 grandchildren and 20 great-granchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Bowman, Harrisburg and Seloma Hemperly, Penbrook; and four brothers - Clayton and John W., both of Palmyra Route 1; Harry of Palmyra and Mason Maulfair, Annville Route 1. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. today from the Rothermel Funeral Home, Palmyra for Mrs. Annie L. Maulfair, 317 North Railroad Street, Palmyra. Rev. E. B. Leinbach, pastor of Trinity Evangelical and Reformed Church, Palmyra, officiated. Interment was made in Palmyra Cemetery. Bearers were U.J. Gruber, Allen Dohner, John Batdorf, A. Warren Garman, Harold Powell, and Raymond Reigle. Norman J. Rothermol had charge of the funeral arrangements. Mrs. Elizabeth Maulfair, nee Bordlemay, wife of Harvey Maulfair of Palmyra, Route 1 died at 1:15 o’clock this morning at her residence. Death was attributed to heart trouble from which Mrs. Maulfair had been ailing for the past year. She was 53 years of age.

She was a member of the Palmyra Evangelical Congregational Church

Surviving are: her husband, Harvey Maulfair; five sons Elmer of Lebanon, Route 4; Joseph, Annville; Ammon, Lebanon, Route 4; Raymond, Grantville; and Walter, Palmyra; two daughters Mrs. Henry Self, Palmyra; and Miss Emma at home; one sister, Mrs. Irvin Ulrigh, Palmyra; one brother Daniel B. Bordlemay, Palmyra; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Jennie (Fox) Maulfair

Mrs. Harry Maulfair Dies At Palmyra Home

Mrs. Jennie (Fox) Maulfair, wife of Harry Maulfair, expired suddenly from the offsets of a heart attack on Thursday evening at 5 o'clock at her home, 311 North Chestnut Street, Palmyra. She previously appeared to be in excellent health and her death proved to be a shock to relatives and friends. He would have attained her 58th year early in the coming new year.

She was a daughter of Aaron and the late Sarah (Harvey) Fox and resided in the Palmyra region all her life. She was highly esteemed in Trinity Reformed church, Palmyra, of which she was a member and was also affiliated with the Sunshine Bible Class of the Sunday School and the Ladies Aid Society.

In addition to her husband and father, both of Palmyra, she leaves three daughters, Sarah and Mary of Lebanon and Mrs. Ruth Henry of Palmyra; three sons: Chester and George of Palmyra and Corporal Anson Maulfair in training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Two brothers: Harry Fox of Penbrook and Anson Fox of Annville: three sisters, Mrs. George Sheffy of Lebanon; Mrs. George Etzweller of Hershey RFD., and Mrs. Monroe Hoffman of Palmyra and 13 grandchildren also survive.

Aarron McCord

April 4, 1890

Chief of Police, Aarron McCord, of Lebanon,died on Thursday from the effects of a bullet wound inflicted by Andrew Shirks, a drunken butcher, whom McCord was attempting to take into custody.  After the shooting, Shirks stole a horse and rode out of town.  He was captured Friday morning at Hummelstown, Dauphin County.


Emma (Wagner) McCracken

Emma Wagner McCracken, 61, wife of the Rev. David J. McCracken died Saturday evening in Divine Providence Hospital, Williamsport. She was a resident of Hughsville, RD1.

Born in Lebanon County, she was a daughter of the late Gideon and Leah Hershey Wagner. She was a member of Pleasant View Wesleyan Church, Muncy and she was an ordained minister of the Wesleyan Church. A member of the Oriental Missionary Society, she traveled extensively with that organization and organized many of their programs.

For the last 50 years she was a Sunday school teacher and for the last 17 years, along with her husband, she was the caretaker for the Hughesville Camp meeting Ground.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Mrs. Agailia Castleberry, Fort Worth, Tex., two brothers, Frank H. Wagner, Palmyra and Hershey B. Wagner, Annville.

Funeral services for Mrs. Annie McGowan of 40 S. Walnut Street were held this morning at 8:30 o'clock from Thompson's Funeral Home, 126 South Ninth Street. A regular high mass was conducted at 9:00 o'clock in St. Mary's church with the Rev. Rather John J. Lawley, rector of St. Mary's in charge. Interment took place in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Daniel Sullivan, John Allwein, Stephen Wachta and Stephen Metro. Thompson's were in charge of the arrangements.

Bishop J. S. Mills Dead
Was a Leading United Brethren Preacher and Mission Worker
Bishop James S. Mills, D. D., Ph. D., of the United Brethern church, died at his residence in Annville, Lebanon county, in his sixty-second year. Bishop Mills' death was due to fever, which he contracted eight or ten years ago while on a missionary tour of Africa. A littler over a year ago he visited the U. B. missions in China, Japan and the Philippine Islands. He had been confined to his residence for some months.
