DR. A. H. BALLIET, cigar box manufacturer and progressive man of affairs, was born in Ballietsville, Lehigh County, Pa., December 27, 1867, the son of Aaron and Catherine (Hausman) Balliet. He obtained his education in the public schools, the Hagerstown (Maryland) Academy and Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, Pa. Later he studied veterinary surgery at Toronto, Canada, where he was graduated with honors in 1888. Following eleven years of active practice in Ballietsville, he came to Allentown and continued his profession for several years, when he entered other fields of activity. In 1900 he associated with Walter Biery in the operation of the Eagle cigar box factory, but after six months became the sole owner by purchase. Quickly outgrowing other sites, the present large and thoroughly equipped plant was erected at Franklin, Warren and Fifteenth Streets. The factory employs between 250 and 300 hands, and has an annual output of 20,000 boxes. Mr. Balliet is a successful business man because he is energetic, progressive and enterprising. But he has always had time to devote to his many friends, and takes a keen interest in public affairs. He still retains a fondness for rural life, and his “Pastime Farm,” along Cedar Creek, with its rare species of fowl and finely bred animals, is one of Allentown’s show places. On February 21, 1889, Doctor Balliet married Anna, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Morgan. He is a Republican in politics and a member of the Clover Club. |
